Sixers, Flyers accelerate timeline for new arena in South Philly, saying it will be complete by 2030

Philadelphia, PA - The timeline for a new home for the Philadelphia 76ers and Flyers has been accelerated, with the teams now aiming to complete the project at the Sports Complex in South Philadelphia by 2030, one year ahead of their initial goal.

The decision was made after the Sixers and Comcast Spectacor, led by minority owner David Adelman, scrapped plans for a new arena on East Market Street, which faced strong opposition from local residents. The original plan had called for the team's move to the new arena in 2031, coinciding with the expiration of their lease at the Xfinity Mobile Arena.

Instead, the teams have partnered with Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment to develop a joint venture for the new arena, which will be shared with an upcoming WNBA expansion team set to debut in Philadelphia in 2030. The arena is expected to be one of the most technologically advanced and fan-focused sports and entertainment venues in the world.

While details about the project's cost and construction timeline remain scarce, sources suggest that two major construction firms, Turner and AECOM Hunt, have been selected to build the facility. The teams' decision has also sparked excitement among fans and local business owners, who see the new arena as a major driver of economic growth in South Philadelphia.

Comcast Spectacor owns the Xfinity Mobile Arena, which underwent a $400 million renovation last year. With the timeline now being accelerated, it's likely that the construction process will move at an unprecedented pace to ensure the WNBA expansion team has a home by 2030.

The new arena is expected to be part of a larger redevelopment plan for the Sports Complex, which includes restaurants, retail spaces, public plazas, and potentially residential projects. While not all stakeholders have signed on to the long-term plan, the Eagles are reportedly still in the early stages of evaluating their future plans, leaving some uncertainty around the project's overall scope.

For now, fans can expect a state-of-the-art venue that promises to take live sports and entertainment experiences to new heights.

Ugh, this is just another example of how out of control these big projects get 🤯. I mean, who gets excited about an arena being completed in 2030?! That's like, what feels like ancient history for a fanbase 😴. And don't even get me started on the timeline, it sounds like they're gonna be cranking out this thing at light speed 🔥. Two firms? That's just gonna lead to some serious headaches down the line 🤦‍♂️. I swear, when are these teams gonna listen to their fans instead of just pushing through with whatever fancy-schmancy design comes along 🤑. This whole WNBA expansion thing better be worth it...

OMG, 2030 can't come soon enough!!! I'm beyond hyped for this new arena! 🤩 The Sixers and Flyers deserve an amazing home and it sounds like they're gonna get one! I mean, a joint venture with the WNBA expansion team is a genius move! It's all about bringing people together and making sports more accessible. And can we talk about how fan-focused the design is supposed to be?! 😍 I'm literally counting down the days until I can see the inside of that place and experience the magic for myself! The tech and amenities will be insane! Turner and AECOM Hunt are gonna bring the heat with this build, no doubt. 💪 And let's not forget the economic growth it'll bring to South Philly - a win-win all around! 🌟

🤔 This is good news for the city, finally something happening with that old arena 🏟️. The fact they're bringing in another team like WNBA makes it way more exciting 🎉. Hopefully, they won't screw up the design or the budget, we don't need a mess on our hands 😬. Can't wait to see what kind of tech and features they'll be throwing into that place 💻

🤯 I'm low-key hyped for this move! The fact that they're bumping up the timeline by a year is insane. I mean, can you imagine how epic it's gonna be with all these new features and tech? And the partnership with Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment is genius. Having a WNBA team moving in at the same time as the Sixers and Flyers is a match made in heaven. It'll be lit for fans! The only thing that's got me worried is how they're gonna make it happen so fast... those construction firms are gonna have to bring their A-game! 💪

I'm low-key stoked about this, but like, let's get real - 2030 is gonna be a wild ride 🤯! I'm all for accelerating the timeline, but we gotta keep an eye on those construction costs. $400 million was dropped last year on the Xfinity Mobile Arena, what's gonna make this one worth it? Also, don't even get me started on the WNBA expansion team - like, are they really ready to debut in 2030? I hope those two major construction firms can live up to their tech game...this new arena better be fire 🔥!

I'm totally stoked about this news 🤩! The Philly 76ers and Flyers are going to have an amazing new arena by 2030! I mean, who doesn't love the idea of watching their favorite teams play in a cutting-edge venue? And with it being shared with a WNBA team, we're gonna get to see some awesome women's hoops action too 🏀💪. The tech is supposed to be insane, with all sorts of fancy features that'll make the experience even more immersive. Can't wait to check out the new Sports Complex in South Philly! It's gonna be a game-changer for the city and for sports fans everywhere 🤯🎟️
