A new approach to a Covid-19 nasal vaccine shows early promise | CNN

Scientists in Germany claim to have developed a nasal vaccine that can neutralize Covid-19 infections in the nose and throat, where the virus initially enters the body. The vaccine uses a live but weakened form of the coronavirus, which is administered through the nasal tissues.

In hamster studies published recently in Nature Microbiology, two doses of the vaccine proved to be highly effective in preventing illness by blocking the virus's ability to replicate itself in the animals' upper airways, achieving "sterilizing immunity". This approach has been likened to stationing firefighters under a smoke alarm, as it provides immediate defense against infection.

The new vaccine takes an old approach of weakening a virus and using it to elicit an immune response. The technique, called codon pair deoptimization, makes the virus harder for cells to translate, rendering it harmless while still stimulating the body's defenses.

Results from these studies are promising, but experts caution that more testing is needed before the vaccine can be widely used. A Phase I clinical trial is currently underway in humans, led by a Swiss company called RocketVax.

Other nasal vaccines are already in various stages of development and have shown potential in preventing Covid-19 infections. However, these too face significant challenges, particularly when it comes to respiratory infections like this one.

Some researchers believe that the key to success lies in boosting mucosal immunity, which is better at recognizing new variants than existing antibodies. The German vaccine has already demonstrated effectiveness against Omicron, although further updates may be necessary due to its mutagenesis.

One thing is certain: as long as Covid-19 continues to spread, there will always be the risk of it mutating into a more contagious or damaging form. Therefore, researchers are working tirelessly to develop new vaccines that can prevent infection before it takes hold.

The development of such vaccines has been hampered by funding and public perception, with many people believing the "vaccine race" is won and lost. However, experts like Dr. Greg Poland stress that much work remains to be done and that the next generation of Covid-19 vaccines could offer a pan-coronavirus solution.

With several nasal vaccines currently in development, including those from China and India, there is hope on the horizon for a more effective approach against respiratory infections like this one. However, it will require careful consideration of safety concerns and the potential risks associated with live attenuated viruses.

πŸ€” I think its a huge deal that scientists in Germany are working on a nasal vaccine that can help prevent Covid-19 from taking hold in the first place... πŸ™ The fact that two doses were able to block the virus's replication and give "sterilizing immunity" is mind-blowing! πŸ’₯ What if we could actually boost mucosal immunity to recognize new variants better? That would be a total game-changer for tackling this pandemic. πŸš€ Of course, more testing is needed, but its exciting to see progress being made... even if it's not as fast as some people wanted. 😊

omg u guys i'm so hyped about dis new nasal covid vaccine!!! 🀩 it's like they actually figured out a way to protect our noses from covid πŸ˜‚ but seriously, it sounds like it could be a game changer, especially since omicron is still spreading like wildfire. i mean, booster shots r cool and all, but can't we just have one shot that keeps us safe forever? 🀣 anywayz, i'm all about dis German scientists who are workin hard to create a vaccine dat's gonna save lives πŸ’•

πŸ€” just saw that Germany's nasal Covid vaccine has already shown some promising results in hamster studies πŸΉπŸ’‰ 2 doses gave them sterilizing immunity against Omicron too! 🚫 but we need more human trials before it's a go πŸ“ Phase I clinical trial is underway with RocketVax... πŸš€ and other nasal vaccines are in the pipeline from China & India too πŸŒπŸ”¬ hope they can get past the funding issues & public perception πŸ€‘πŸ’Έ and we might have some real progress on this one soon! πŸ’‘

πŸ€” So I think its cool that German scientists are working on a nasal vaccine that can neutralize Covid-19 in the nose and throat. Its an old approach to weakening a virus but still effective, kinda like using a weaker version of the enemy to defeat it in battle πŸ¦Έβ€β™‚οΈ. The idea of boosting mucosal immunity is also interesting, its like having a superpower that can recognize new variants before existing antibodies can catch up πŸ’ͺ.

I'm glad to see other nasal vaccines are already in development and some have shown promise too 😊. However, I think we need to be careful with this one since its live attenuated virus πŸ€•. We don't want it to mutate into something worse or cause harm to people who get vaccinated. But overall, its great that researchers are pushing forward and trying new approaches to fight Covid-19 πŸ’‘.

I'm also thinking that the development of these vaccines is kinda like a marathon not a sprint πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ. We need to keep going even when it feels like we're getting nowhere fast because we'll get there eventually πŸ’ͺ.

idk about these new nasal vaccines πŸ€”... it sounds promising but i'm not sure if they're ready for prime time yet. i mean, we've seen so many failed trials before and the Covid-19 pandemic has been a wild card for vaccines πŸš€. still, if it means we can finally get some real protection against this virus, then i'm all for it πŸ’‰. but let's not forget that these vaccines are still in the experimental stages and there's a lot of work to be done before they're widely available. safety concerns need to be taken seriously too πŸ™.

I'm not saying I'm no expert, but I feel like we've been vaccinated to death already πŸ˜‚πŸ’‰. Nah, seriously though, a nasal vaccine sounds like just what the doctor ordered - or should I say, just what the nose ordered? 🀣 Anyway, it's awesome that German scientists are on top of this and making progress. And yeah, funding can be an issue for all sorts of projects, but I guess that's why they call it a 'racing' vaccine, right? πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ The key is to keep pushing forward and not get too comfortable in our seats, just like the firefighters under those smoke alarms πŸ˜…. Can't wait to see what other tricks these researchers have up their sleeves... or should I say, in their beaks? πŸ€ͺ

😐 I'm kinda skeptical about these new nasal vaccines tho...I mean, we've had so many variants come out since the pandemic started and each time new vaccines have to be made. It's hard to keep up! πŸ’Š They gotta make sure this one doesn't cause any unexpected problems in humans though - we can't afford another disaster πŸ€•

πŸ€” I'm intrigued by this new nasal vaccine, sounds crazy to me that scientists are using a weakened coronavirus to fight the actual virus πŸ˜‚. But seriously, it's about time we see some innovative solutions to combat Covid-19. The key is making sure these vaccines can adapt to new variants without losing their effectiveness 🀝. What do you guys think? Can we rely on these nasal vaccines for real?

I'm not holding my breath just yet... I mean, it's great that Germany's developed a nasal vaccine that shows promise in hamster studies 🐹, but we need to see some real-world results before we get too excited 😬. Funding for research has been a major issue, and public perception is still a bit skewed (I mean, who doesn't love the idea of beating the "vaccine race" πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ). But hey, it's not like this isn't worth exploring... with so many variants out there, we need all the help we can get πŸ’‘. The key will be to boost mucosal immunity and develop vaccines that can recognize new variants on the fly πŸ”“. Let's keep our fingers crossed (but not too tightly 🀞) that one of these nasal vaccines makes it big!

πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ I mean, finally! A vaccine that's gonna save our noses from those pesky Covid-19 particles 🚽. Like, who needs a vaccine in their arm when you can just stick it up your nose and call it a day? πŸ˜‚ But seriously, this German nasal vaccine is promising, especially since it's already shown effectiveness against Omicron 🀝. The technique of codon pair deoptimization is pretty cool (or at least not completely useless, lol). Still, let's not get our hopes up just yet – more testing and all that jazz πŸ’ŠπŸ‘. And who knows, maybe one day we'll have a pan-coronavirus vaccine that can tackle those pesky variants πŸš€. Until then, I'll just stick to my trusty hand sanitizer... or my nose 🀣

just got to hear about this new nasal vaccine and im thinkin its a good idea lol πŸ€” covid's still gonna be around for a while so gotta stay ahead. i mean, if it can prevent that initial infection in the nose and throat then thats like 90% of getting sick right there. dont get me wrong, more testing is needed but its nice to see some progress. also, im all for boosting mucosal immunity its been shown to be better at handling new variants. cant wait to see what other countries come up with too πŸ‘

The idea of targeting Covid-19 at its entry point in the nose & throat is really genius πŸ€―πŸ‘! Using weakened but live coronavirus to boost mucosal immunity makes total sense. The stationing firefighters analogy is perfect too - imagine having a strong defense against infections right where they start 😊. I'm excited to see how this German vaccine pans out in human trials, and how other nasal vaccines are progressing. It's like the needle has been moved up - we're finally getting closer to finding a better solution for respiratory infections 🎯! And can you imagine having a pan-coronavirus vaccine? That would be huge πŸ’₯!

I'm so done with all these vaccine developments 🀯. It's like, can't they just figure out a solution already? πŸ™„ I mean, I get it, Covid-19 is still around and all that jazz, but do we really need another nasal vaccine? Can't we just stick with the ones we have for now? And what's up with these Phase I clinical trials? Like, when are they gonna make this thing available to regular people already?! πŸ•°οΈ It's been years since Covid-19 started spreading and we're still playing catch-up. I'm not buying into all the hype just yet. Need more proof before I put my faith in another vaccine πŸ’‰

I'm low-key impressed by Germany's new nasal vaccine πŸ€”. I mean, we've been talking about this stuff for years now, but actual progress? That's a win in my book! πŸŽ‰ And let's be real, the whole COVID-19 situation is still super unpredictable. You can't just sit back and expect it to magically disappear πŸ’”. We need all the vaccines (and treatments) we can get right now.

I also love how they're thinking outside the box with this codon pair deoptimization technique 🧬. It's like, we've been playing catch-up for so long, but maybe this is the game-changer we needed? And who knows, maybe we'll finally get a vaccine that can handle all the new variants like Omicron πŸ”„.

But seriously, I think it's time to stop underestimating the power of nasal vaccines πŸ”₯. We've been focusing on the whole "inject-and-pray" approach for too long, and it's time to give some love to the mucosal immunity method 🌱. If we can get these vaccines to work as promised, that would be a huge win in my book πŸ†.

Let's keep pushing forward, researchers! πŸ’ͺ And let's not forget, safety is key πŸ”’. We don't want any more vaccine-related issues on our hands 😬.

πŸ€” I'm kinda surprised scientists are revisiting old approaches to tackle Covid-19, but it makes sense given how elusive the virus is. This nasal vaccine could be a game-changer if it works out – imagine being able to prevent infections before they take hold! 🌟 The concept of boosting mucosal immunity is also super interesting, especially with new variants popping up all the time. It's reassuring to know that researchers are working tirelessly to stay ahead of the virus... we just need to keep our fingers crossed (and hopefully not too many more hamster studies πŸ˜‰). What do you guys think about this development?

πŸ€” This nasal vaccine thingy sounds kinda cool! I mean, who wouldn't want to avoid Covid-19 altogether? πŸ™ But for real tho, I'm a bit skeptical 'bout the whole "sterilizing immunity" thing - what does that even mean? Sounds like some fancy science-y stuff 🧬. Still, if it's shown promise in hamster studies and all, I'm all for more testing & trials to make sure it's safe 4 humans πŸ’Š. And omg, can we pls focus on boosting mucosal immunity already?! 🀞 That's the key 2 preventing those pesky variants from taking over 🚫. Fingers crossed this nasal vaccine ends up being a game-changer! πŸ™

Ugh I'm so done with all these vaccine developments 😩🀯 I mean I get it scientists are trying to save humanity and all but can't they just make a good ol' fashioned one already?! πŸ™„ All this nasal vaccine stuff is giving me migraines πŸ’‰πŸ’Š like what's next a vaccine for your nose hair?! 🀣 But seriously though, the fact that there's so much hope on the horizon for a pan-coronavirus solution is super promising πŸŒŸπŸ‘ I just wanna believe that we're finally gonna get some real relief from this constant Covid-19 drama πŸ’”πŸ’• And yeah funding and public perception have been major roadblocks but it's not like they haven't tried before πŸ’ͺ🏽 let's keep our fingers crossed (not too tightly lol) for these new vaccines to actually work out 🀞
