Awful defense already big issue for young Nets, Jordi Fernandez

Young Nets Struggle to Replicate 2024 Success Behind a Defending That Has Already Become Unacceptable.

The Brooklyn Nets have started the new season in historic fashion - historically bad. Their first four games have resulted in an astonishing 522 points conceded, the most in franchise history.

This trend is no surprise for fans of the team who witnessed them tank last season with the aim to secure the top pick in the next year's draft. As a result, head coach Jordi Fernández is expected to implement defensive adjustments that prioritize the younger players' development.

Fernández called out his defense as "unacceptable" following Monday's defeat against Houston, where they allowed 137 points and were dominated by an efficient Rockets offense.

"I think it's just a lack of experience," Fernández stated in response to another lopsided loss to the Rockets on Oct. 27th.

However, this excuse may be used sparingly given that similar issues arose last season when the team conceded 130 points or more in three games.

"Your attention to detail and your effort has to be there," Fernández emphasized during a press conference after Monday's defeat. "It doesn't matter if you play 20 seconds, if you play three minutes, if you play 10 minutes."

The young Nets have already struggled with efficiency on defense this season, ranking the worst in the NBA for points conceded per game (130.5), field goal percentage allowed by opponents (53.7%), and three-point shooting (46%).

This has raised concerns that they may struggle to sustain focus every possession if their current defensive approach does not improve.

"We've got to talk better on defense... it's just all the things on defense," Day'Ron Sharpe said of his squad's porous defense.

In an attempt to rectify this, Fernández pinpointed a specific area where the team needs improvement - the early part of the third quarter. He emphasized that addressing these issues will be crucial in securing positive energy and accountability within the group.

The Nets face their next challenge with a home game against the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday in Brooklyn. With Ziaire Williams listed as questionable for the match due to a lower back/glute contusion, it remains to be seen how Fernández' squad will bounce back from this recent slump.

I'm low-key surprised they think experience is the main issue lol 🤣 i mean, 522 points conceded in four games? that's wild! 😱 and what's up with all these young players being benched or not playing? fernández needs to figure out a way to get them to buy in and play some solid D... it's like they're trying to lose on purpose 🤦‍♂️

🤦‍♂️ ugh, the Nets are tanking again and people think they're just going through an "adjustment phase"? 🚫 Newsflash: it's not just about experience, it's about effort and attention to detail! They've got some young guns on the team but somehow they still manage to get trounced by every other team. 😴 Jordi Fernández is gonna have to do better than just making empty excuses about his players' "energy" and "accountability". What's gonna happen when Ziaire Williams doesn't make it back for the Hawks game? 🤕 The Nets are just gonna keep on losing, mark my words...

🤔 The thing is, I don't think it's just about the young players lacking experience... I mean, they're playing in a competitive league against top-notch teams already 🏀. Their defense being "unacceptable" might not be entirely fair. I'm more worried that the whole team is still finding its groove and figuring out their system. Fernández saying it's all about attention to detail and effort is true, but it's also about game planning and adapting to opponents. Can't just expect them to magically get it right every time 🤷‍♂️.

I feel bad for Jordi Fernández and his team... 🤕 I get that they're trying to develop their young players, but 522 points conceded in four games is crazy! 😲 They need to step up their game on defense, it's not just about experience, it's about execution. Day'Ron Sharpe said it all - "we've got to talk better on defense". I mean, come on, they're the worst in the league for field goal percentage allowed by opponents... 🤯 It's a tough road ahead, but with some adjustments and focus, I think they can turn things around. Maybe they should try a more aggressive defensive strategy? Just saying... 😉

🤦‍♂️ come on bro, 522 points conceded in four games is just crazy! i mean, i get that they're trying to develop their young players and all, but can't they at least try to defend against a team that's not like the rockets or something? 🤣 and fernández blaming it all on experience? 😂 dude, you can't make excuses for that long. they need to step up their game ASAP or else they'll be stuck in this tanking cycle forever. and day'rond sharpe is right, they gotta communicate better on defense... it's like, easy to say "talk better" but how are they gonna do it? 🤔

Ugh 🤕 another season of tanking for the Nets, what's up with that 🙄? They got exposed by the Rockets like 5 times and still can't figure out their D 🤦‍♂️. Jordi Fernández is trying to spin it as an excuse, but we all know young players need experience to develop 🕰️. 522 points conceded in just 4 games? That's insane 💀. If they don't turn it around soon, fans are gonna lose their minds 😩. And now Ziaire Williams is out with an injury, that's just great 🤦‍♂️. This season has all the makings of a total dumpster fire ⚫️.

Man... can't believe what's going on with those Nets 🤯 They're like, totally tanking again! I mean, I get it, they wanna secure that top pick in the draft, but come on, it's not gonna be fun for fans like us watching them get destroyed every game 😩 Jordi Fernández is trying to spin it as a "lack of experience" thing, but let's be real, they've been playing like this since last season 📉 And Day'Ron Sharpe is right, you gotta talk better on defense... it's all about the details, man! 💡 They need to figure out how to play some solid D and stop those pesky Rockets (and everyone else) from lighting them up 🔥 Ziaire Williams out for a bit, that doesn't help. Fingers crossed they can turn it around against the Hawks on Wednesday 🤞
