Brandy and Monica’s ‘The Boy is Mine’ tour heats up a snowy Detroit - Detroit Metro Times

Detroiters Braved the Snow for a Star-Studded Night as Brandy and Monica's 'The Boy Is Mine' Tour Heats Up

A sellout crowd braved the snow on Saturday, Nov. 29, at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, making their way to what promised to be an unforgettable night of music with two of R&B's biggest icons, Brandy and Monica.

The 32-city tour, which has already made 24 stops, brings together two artists whose careers have been intertwined for decades. Born in different cities but raised in California, the duo rose to fame in the '90s and early 2000s with their powerful voices and distinctive styles - Brandy as the quintessential good girl next door and Monica as the 'hood kid from Atlanta.

Their first two albums - Monica's Miss Thang (1995) and The Boy Is Mine (1998), and Brandy's Brandy (1994) and Never Say Never (1998) - were both multi-platinum, earning each artist a Grammy Award. The tour promises to be an unforgettable night of music, with the duo performing 40 songs across six acts.

The show kicked off promptly at 8 p.m., featuring opening act Jamal Roberts, followed by Mya, who took the stage to perform her hit singles "Case of the Ex" and "My Love is Like…Wo". The singer gave away roses, posters, albums, and CDs to the crowd before leaving them disappointed with a last-minute announcement that Muni Long would no longer be part of the tour due to health concerns.

However, Kelly Rowland from Destiny's Child took center stage next, performing her hit "Motivation" along with classic songs like "Tender Love" and "Soldier". The singer looked and sounded as good as ever, even after a 15-year hiatus from touring. She admitted that this was her first time back on tour in over a decade.

After a short break and video intro, Brandy and Monica took the stage at 9:40 p.m., accompanied by a dozen backup dancers dressed in black and white outfits - a theme that continued throughout the night. The duo's performance featured six acts, with each artist showcasing their vocal prowess on songs like "Knock Knock" and "Best Friend".

Monica brought out three Detroit rappers - Kash Doll, Skilla Baby, and Icewear Vezzo - to perform their hits, further cementing her love for the city. The tour also highlighted the beef and rivalry between Brandy and Monica that was perpetuated by the media, but in reality, the two artists had a cordial relationship.

The show's final act featured both artists singing their iconic duet "The Boy Is Mine", along with a heartfelt dedication to Whitney Houston. Throughout the night, the duo showcased their incredible vocal range and chemistry, leaving fans in awe of their performances.

As Brandy and Monica's 'The Boy Is Mine' tour continues, it's clear that the quality and nostalgia of yesteryear's R&B still has a firm grip on music fans.

omg how original having 2 rnb icons do their old thing 🙄 what's next gonna be a reunion tour of boy bands from the 90s? brandy and monica are like the ultimate girl crush but seriously who thought it was a good idea to put them on the same bill? also kelly rowland just casually showed up outta nowhere that was wild 🤯 at least they didn't mess up the whole setlist like some other tours i've been to. all in all though if you're into that kind of thing, go for it 🎉

I'm stoked to see these two legends bring back that 90s R&B vibe! The energy in the crowd was electric, and Brandy and Monica totally slayed their performances 🤩. I loved how they didn't let the past drama between them come up during the show - it's all about the music now 💖.

The opening act Jamal Roberts and Mya got the crowd moving, but it was Kelly Rowland who really stole the show 🙌. And those backup dancers? Wow! They totally complemented the duo's style 👗.

I'm also loving how Monica is giving back to her hometown with that Detroit rap performance - it's all about community vibes ❤️. The final act was just pure magic, though... who else can make "The Boy Is Mine" sound so fresh? 🎶

Brandy and Monica's tour is proof that quality music never goes out of style 💫. Can't wait to see what's next for these two R&B queens!

oh man I was thinking they were gonna cancel the concert 🤕🎵 because of all the snow ❄️ but Detroiters really came out to support Brandy & Monica 💖! Kelly Rowland killed it on stage too 🔥 my fave part was when Brandy brought out those Detroit rappers for a collab 😍 and I loved how they played off the beef between them 👀 it's crazy how long ago that song "The Boy Is Mine" came out 🎵

man this concert was like totally lit 🤩, i mean who needs good weather when you can get your girl crush fix with Brandy and Monica live? 💁‍♀️ they killed the game with their 40 song setlist and that opening act Jamal Roberts was actually pretty fire 🔥. but honestly though the real MVPs were the backup dancers in black and white outfits - those outfits were everything 👗.

anyway, i'm not surprised Monica brought out some Detroit rappers to spice things up a bit 🎤 it's all about giving back to the city that raised them, right? and can we talk about how iconic "The Boy Is Mine" is still holding up even after all these years 💖? this tour is def one for the ages

omg I'm so down for this tour!!! 🤩 I remember listening to "The Boy Is Mine" all the time in high school... it never gets old. I love how Brandy and Monica are keeping it real and giving Detroiters an unforgettable night. 😂 It's crazy that they're still killing the game after all these years. And can we talk about Kelly Rowland for a second? 🙌 She looked amazing on stage, and her voice is still insane. The fact that she was able to pull off that performance after a 15-year hiatus is truly inspiring. 💖

I'm so down for this 90s revival 🤩 - I mean, what's not to love about Brandy and Monica bringing back the classics? But, at the same time, is it really necessary to make such a huge deal out of their rivalry, like we're all supposed to be rooting for one or the other... no, I'm good with just enjoying the music 🎤. The fact that they can still kill it on stage after all these years is insane, but it's also kinda sad that Muni Long had to drop off due to health concerns 🤕. And, I don't know if I'd say Kelly Rowland was "as good as ever", maybe just... really good again? 😂 anyway, the show was lit and I'm so glad I got to experience it!

🎤 I'm so stoked for this tour!!! It's gonna be lit with two legends like Brandy & Monica 🌟! Their chemistry is undeniable & their vocals are on point 💯. The fact that they're both R&B icons from the 90s/2000s makes it a total nostalgia fest 🎧. I loved how Kelly Rowland made an appearance - she slayed her performance! 😍 And can we talk about the opening act? Jamal Roberts brought the heat 🔥. It's amazing to see these artists still killing the game after all these years 💪. The show's final act was everything & more - that "The Boy Is Mine" duet had me weak in the knees 😭. If you haven't gotten tix yet, what are you even waiting for? 🎟️ #BrandyAndMonicaTour #RnBLegends #NostalgiaIsTheBest

omg i was so hyped when i heard Brandy and Monica were coming to town! 😍 i mean who wouldn't want to see two of the best R&B singers of all time perform live? 🎤 their setlist had everything - old hits like "The Boy Is Mine" and new ones too. but what really got me was how they paid homage to Whitney Houston, it was such a beautiful tribute ❤️. i also loved how they included some Detroit talent on stage, Kash Doll and Skilla Baby killed it! 🤩 the crowd was so into it too, everyone was singing along and dancing in the aisles 💃🏽. it just goes to show that even after all these years, R&B still has magic 🎶.

just saw this article about brandy & monica's tour lol they're killing it out there! 40 songs in one night is insane 🤯 i love how monica always brings her own vibe to the performances, like that time she brought out detroit rappers and got the crowd hyped 💥 also gotta say, their chemistry on stage is still as strong as ever 🙌

man 🤷‍♂️ this 40 song setlist is crazy lol how are they gonna fill up 2 hours with just rnb songs?? and its all old hits too, i mean i love Monica & Brandy but cant they do some newer tracks or collab with other artists to mix things up? the video intro was so long too 📹 9 minutes is a bit excessive, can't we get straight into the music already? and what's with all the backup dancers 👯‍♀️ it feels like a choreographed dance show more than a concert. i'm just here for Monica's voice 😍

I'm so down for this 90s R&B revival 🎉🔥! The fact that Brandy and Monica are killing it on their tour is giving me life 💖. I love how they're not just performing their biggest hits, but also some of the lesser-known gems from their discographies. And can we talk about how epic it was to see Kelly Rowland join them on stage? She's still got that Destiny's Child magic ✨. As a parent, I'm excited for my kids to experience this kind of music and nostalgia - it'll be a fun way for us to bond over some great tunes 🎶. And the fact that they're paying homage to Whitney Houston is really special ❤️. The whole tour just feels like a love letter to 90s R&B, and I'm here for it 💕.

I'm tellin' ya 🤩, this tour is gonna be EPIC! Back in my day, we didn't have all these fancy light shows and backup dancers, but Brandy and Monica are killin' it out there! I loved how they brought together some Detroit rappers for the show - it was a nice touch. And let's be real, their chemistry on stage is still on point 💖. It's crazy to think about how much history these two have with each other, but it's great that they can put all that aside and just perform. I'm not gonna lie, I'm feelin' a little nostalgic for the '90s R&B scene - those were some wild times 🕺. And Monica killing it on stage after 15 years off tour? Yaaas, queen 👑!

man i just got back from detroit and oh my gosh its been a wild ride 🤯 brandy and monica absolutely killed it on stage i was a bit worried when muni long pulled out but kelly rowland came through and gave us an amazing set 🎤 anyway the crowd was so hyped and everyone was singing along to every single song including the classics 🙌 its clear that these two legends still got it going on 💁‍♀️ i love how they acknowledged their past beef and turned it into a positive note 🤝 what i loved most about the show tho is how they brought out those detroit rappers and gave us some local flavor 🔥 anyway gotta say, i'm so down for this tour to keep going 🎉
