2025 Davis Cup: Italy Beat Spain To Win Third Straight Title

Italy Wins Third Consecutive Davis Cup Title, Hands Spain 2-0 Defeat

The Italian team has secured their third consecutive Davis Cup triumph, beating Spain 2-0 in the best-of-three tie to become the first country to achieve this feat since the United States between 1968 and 1972.

Playing before a raucous home crowd in Bologna, Italy got off to a strong start with Matteo Berrettini defeating Spanish player Pablo Carreno Busta 6-3, 6-4. However, it was Flavio Cobolli who stole the show with an incredible comeback victory over Jaume Munar, ultimately winning 1-6, 7-6(5), 7-5.

The victories gave Italy a 2-0 lead against six-time champions Spain, ensuring they became the first team to win three consecutive titles in more than 50 years. The Italian coach Filippo Volandri was visibly emotional after the match, stating that it was his third consecutive victory for his team, and he couldn't hold back tears.

"We cannot lose for our country," Cobolli said after his thrilling comeback victory, adding that winning the title meant everything to him. "Sometimes you learn, but you never lose. If you give all you have in your heart... I don't know what I did today. I don't know where I am. The only thing I know is that I'm world champion."

Italy's win marks their fourth Davis Cup title overall, following victories in 1976, 2024, and 2023. They also became the first non-Grand Slam nation to achieve this feat twice, joining a list of countries including the United States and Australia who have accomplished this honor.

The Italian team's impressive victory solidifies their position as one of the top teams in international tennis, setting the stage for what promises to be an exciting year ahead.

I was rooting for Spain, but Italy played some awesome tennis and deserved the win. It's crazy they're the first non-GS nation to win back-to-back titles - that says a lot about their team and coaching 🙌. Can't wait to see what the rest of the year brings for them! 💥
