5-year-old boy and his father return to Minnesota after being released from immigration custody

Liam Conejo Ramos, a 5-year-old boy who captured international headlines with his viral image, has finally returned home to Minnesota after spending weeks in immigration custody. The young boy's father, Adrian Alexander Conejo Arias, was also held captive along with him until their release on Saturday.

The drama unfolded when Liam and his father, who are asylum seekers from Honduras, encountered immigration agents upon returning home from Liam's preschool. Despite the family following established protocols, including booking an appointment through the CBP One app to enter the US, they were detained by the Department of Homeland Security.

A scathing court order from a US District Judge Fred Biery on Saturday demanded that the Trump administration release Liam and his father by Tuesday while their asylum case continues. The judge criticized the government for "ill-conceived" and "incompetently-implemented" policies that result in traumatizing children, including Liam.

The family's harrowing experience drew widespread condemnation, with Democratic Rep. Joaquin Castro of Texas expressing concerns over Liam's well-being, stating that he had been "very depressed." Castro made a surprise visit to the facility, where he later escorted the father and son back home on Sunday morning, saying "Liam is now home."

Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Minnesota Democrat, also posted a photo with Liam and his family, thanking Castro for his efforts. The ordeal has raised concerns about the treatment of asylum seekers in the US, with many calling for reform.

The incident highlights the complexities of the US immigration system, where families are often detained despite following established protocols. While some officials have defended the agents' actions, others have criticized the government's policies as putting children at risk.

As Liam and his father begin to rebuild their lives, they will likely face a long road ahead in pursuing their asylum claims. The case has sparked a national conversation about immigration reform, with many advocates calling for more humane policies that protect vulnerable families like this one.

πŸ€• This is just heartbreaking. Five-year-old Liam was held captive by the system he didn't even understand 🚫. The government's "policies" are literally putting kids in harm's way 😱. We need to fix this ASAP πŸ‘.

Man I'm so relieved that little Liam is finally home πŸ™πŸ‘¦β€πŸ‘¦ his story broke my heart & it's crazy to think he was stuck in that situation for so long 😩 the gov's policies are super flawed, especially when it comes to protecting kids like him πŸ‘ΆπŸš« what kind of system lets a 5-year-old go through trauma like that? 🀯 I'm all for reform, we need to do better by our asylum seekers & make sure they're treated with dignity & respect ❀️

I'm really shook by this whole thing 🀯. How can the US government just detain a 5-year-old kid and his dad? It's just not right. The fact that they were following all the right protocols, using the app, but still got caught up in this mess is wild. I mean, what's the point of having an app if it's not going to work?

And now, a judge is stepping in and demanding their release? It's about time someone held those agents accountable. But, at the same time, we gotta talk about how these policies are gonna affect people like Liam and his dad. They're just trying to seek safety, but they're getting caught up in this bureaucratic nightmare.

It's not just about them, though - it's about all the other families out there who might be going through similar struggles. We need real reform here, not just empty promises. I want to see concrete changes that actually protect people like Liam and his family.

I'm so glad to hear that Liam is finally home with his dad πŸ™Œ... I remember when kids' birthday parties were held at Chuck E Cheese's and we thought it was the coolest thing ever! πŸŽ‚ Anyway, back to this story... it's heartbreaking that a 5-year-old kid had to go through what he did. I mean, who does that to a child? The government needs to figure out a better way to handle immigration cases so kids like Liam aren't traumatized. And what's up with the CBP One app? Sounds like a bunch of red tape πŸ˜’... Anyway, I'm just glad this drama is over and Liam can start living his best life again πŸ’•

Omg πŸ€• that poor little boy went through so much, it's heartbreaking to think he had to spend weeks in immigration custody 🚫. I can only imagine how scared and traumatized he must be, especially after all the attention and scrutiny he faced earlier on πŸ“Ί. And his dad too, being detained along with him would've been just devastating 😩. The fact that they were following all the right protocols yet still got caught up in this mess is really disturbing πŸ˜’. It's about time someone spoke out against those policies and called for reform, we need to make sure we're treating families like Liam's with kindness and compassion ❀️. I'm so glad Rep. Castro stepped in to help them get their lives back on track πŸ™.

Ugh, I'm so glad this little dude is finally home πŸ™πŸΌ. It's just heartbreaking to think of all the trauma he and his dad went through πŸ€•. The way they followed all the right protocols and still got detained is just not right 😑. And that judge's scathing court order? Totally deserved βš–οΈ. I mean, who puts a 5-year-old in immigration custody? It's just cruel πŸ‘Ž.

And to make matters worse, Liam was already depressed before this happened 🀯. The fact that the government is still denying asylum claims and putting families through this is just unacceptable πŸ™„. We need to do better for people like this family πŸ’•. I'm so glad Rep. Castro stepped in and helped them get home safely πŸ‘.

This whole thing highlights how messed up our immigration system can be 🀯. It's not that hard to process asylum claims, but instead we're causing more harm than good πŸ˜”. We need to reform these policies ASAP and make sure families like this one are protected πŸ™πŸΌ.

πŸ™ I'm just so relieved Liam & his dad are finally home πŸ πŸ’• They've been through so much already & it's heartbreaking to think they had to go through all that trauma. This whole ordeal is a reminder of how broken our system can be, especially when it comes to protecting kids πŸ‘ΆπŸΌ. The judge's scathing court order was the least they deserved 🀯. I'm glad Reps Castro & Omar are standing up for them & calling out these ill-conceived policies πŸ’ͺ It's time for real change & more humane treatment of asylum seekers everywhere 🌎

πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ OMG u guys can't believe what just happened?! πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ Liam Conejo Ramos was literally detained in custody with his dad after following all the rules!!! 😱 How's a 5-year-old supposed to deal with that trauma? 🀯 It's like, they were trying to follow the system, and still got caught up in this crazy mess. 🚫 I'm so glad Rep. Castro stepped in to help them out - that dude is a total hero! πŸ’– And can we talk about how messed up it is that Liam was "very depressed" after being detained? πŸ€• Like, what kind of system allows that to happen?! πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ We need some serious changes, stat! 🚫πŸ’ͺ

OMG, can you believe this is what's happening to innocent kids?! 🀯 It's just not right that they're being detained despite doing everything by the book. I'm so glad Rep. Castro stepped in and made a difference for Liam and his dad. They must be living nightmares after going through all this trauma 😩. And what really gets me is that the system is supposed to protect families, but it's instead putting them through this crap. πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ We need to do better, like, now! πŸ’ͺ

πŸ€•πŸŒŽ it's just heartbreaking to think about little Liam being held captive for so long... 5 years old should be playing with friends not stuck in some kinda limbo πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ i mean, what kind of system are we living in where we're torturing our own kids? 🀯 and the worst part is, this isn't an isolated incident... it's like, what's going on?! 🚨 we need to call for change ASAP! πŸ™Œ

omg u guys can u believe what happened 2 this lil boy liam?? he was detained by us customs & immigration agents after coming home from preschool 🀯 and it's just not right they were supposed to follow the app but got detained anyway πŸ˜” its so sad that a court order had to step in for him & his dad πŸ™

i'm so glad dem congress ppl like joaquin castro & ilhan omar are speakin out 4 this lil guy tho πŸ™Œ it's crazy how these policies affect families & kids specifically πŸ€• we need to make sure they're protected & not traumatized by the system πŸ’•
