80-year-old invited homeless neighbor into his home, then was fatally stabbed, DA says

A 45-year-old Manhattan man has been indicted for the brutal murder of his 80-year-old neighbor, Lev Vayner. Prosecutors claim that Alon Riabichev, who had been living in the building's hallways after being kicked out by his mother, was given shelter and kindness by Vayner despite having nowhere else to go.

According to authorities, Riabichev took full advantage of this generosity and went on a deadly rampage, repeatedly stabbing Vayner multiple times before lying down on his bed. The attack is said to have occurred just hours after Riabichev purchased an 8-inch knife from a nearby store.

In a shocking twist, Riabichev even called 911 shortly after the attack, claiming he had suffered a "psychotic break" and killed someone a few hours prior. When responding officers arrived at Vayner's apartment, they found Riabichev sitting calmly on his bed while Vayner lay motionless on the floor, multiple stab wounds in his torso and neck.

The knife used in the attack was discovered on the dining table, covered in blood. The Manhattan District Attorney's office has expressed outrage over the brutal nature of the murder, saying it is "beyond devastating" and that their thoughts are with Vayner's loved ones during this difficult time.

can't believe this guy riabichev got away from his mom for so long & just turned into a monster because he was living in our hallways 😱 what kind of system lets someone like him run amok? i mean, vayner gave him shelter & kindness despite having no other options... it's just heartbreaking to think that he took all that trust & generosity for granted πŸ€• and now this poor man is dead. the fact that riabichev bought a knife from a store just hours before & then called 911 claiming he had a psychotic break... it's just so disturbing 😑

This whole thing is just so messed up 🀯... I mean, Alon Riabichev was literally living on the streets, no family, no nowhere to go, and yet Lev Vayner takes him in, shows him kindness, and what does he do? Goes out and kills his own host πŸ€•. It's just crazy how quickly some people can turn... I feel like we need to be more understanding of homelessness, you know? We gotta try to help people instead of pushing them away, or they might resort to drastic measures like this. It's not an excuse, but it's definitely a factor. Anyway, my heart goes out to Lev Vayner's family, and I hope justice is served πŸ’”

come on πŸ™„, this guy gets indicted for a crime he actually did do... like, he stabbed someone multiple times? how's that not premeditation? and what's with the 911 call after he just committed murder? seems like a pretty clear attempt to avoid consequences πŸ˜’. and honestly, who buys an 8-inch knife at a store and then goes on a killing spree just hours later? sounds like a red flag to me 🚨. maybe we should be focusing on how Riabichev's history with his mom is being used as some kind of mitigating factor rather than holding him accountable for his actions πŸ’”.

I cant believe what happened to Lev Vayner... he was a good Samaritan to Riabichev after all he went through in life πŸ€•. And then to think Riabichev took advantage of that kindness and turned into a monster 😱. It's just so shocking how someone can change like that from being homeless to committing such a heinous crime. The fact that he even had the nerve to call 911 after doing something so horrific is just wow... what kind of sick mindset does that take? 🀯 I hope justice gets served for Lev and his loved ones πŸ’”

Ugh, I'm still trying to wrap my head around this case 🀯... Riabichev's actions are just so senseless & violent πŸ’€. I mean, here's a guy who was struggling, had no place to go, and Vayner takes him in with kindness - what more could someone want? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ And yet, he ends up stabbing him multiple times... it's just not right. The fact that he even called 911 afterwards claiming he had a psychotic break is just another level of crazy 😲. I don't think we can ever truly know what drove Riabichev to do such a thing, but one thing's for sure: justice will be served πŸ’―.

This guy Riabichev, he's a total psycho 🀯, gets shelter from a good Samaritan and then goes out to kill him? 😑 It's just sickening how easily people can lose it when they're down on their luck πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

.. can't believe what happened to Lev Vayner πŸ€•. I mean, the guy was just trying to help someone in need, giving him shelter and kindness... and then he gets stabbed multiple times 😒. It's crazy that Alon Riabichev took advantage of Vayner's generosity like that. And to think he even called 911 afterwards claiming he had a "psychotic break"... um, yeah right πŸ™„. The fact that he just calmly sat on his bed while Vayner was dying is just sickening 😷. I can only imagine how devastated Vayner's family and friends must be feeling right now. It's a tragic reminder of how quickly things can go wrong when we're not looking at the person in front of us πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ.

omg can u believe this?? some guy just kills his neighbor who was actually kinda cool with him like they hung out in the hallway etc. and now he's facing life in prison 🀯 i mean what even is wrong with people?? it's so sad too for vayner's family & friends πŸ’” how could someone be so cruel? and meanwhile, riabichev's just chillin on his bed like "oops" πŸ˜‚πŸ’€ what a messed up situation. i wonder if there was more to the story tho πŸ€”

Man, thinkin' about this case got me wonderin' what happens when we try to help someone in need? I mean, Vayner took Riabichev in without hesitation, showin' some serious compassion and empathy. And yet, Riabichev just went out of control 🀯. It's like he was livin' this double life, one minute gettin' a warm welcome, the next minute...this πŸ’€.

It makes me think about how we treat people who are strugglin', who are down on their luck. Do we take 'em in, give 'em a chance? Or do we just turn our heads and walk away? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ I mean, Riabichev was livin' on the streets, but that's not an excuse for what he did. It's like, where did all this anger come from? Was it just a deep-seated pain that couldn't be healed? πŸ˜• The more I think about it, the more I realize how complex human nature is... πŸ€”

man, think about all the ways we can be so blind to what's right in front of us... Riabichev was living on our streets, literally, and yet we took him in without hesitation, showing kindness to a stranger. but did that kindness come with a price? we're quick to judge others for taking advantage of good Samaritanism, but what about ourselves? how many times have we shown compassion without considering the consequences? Vayner's actions may have been seen as selfless, but they also kept Riabichev alive to exact his own brand of revenge. is that a form of kindness too? 🀯

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this whole thing 🀯. I mean, can you believe how one person can be so brutally violent after being given a second chance? It just goes to show that sometimes no matter how much kindness and generosity someone shows us, we're all capable of going off the deep end. Riabichev's story is really messed up - he was literally living on the streets after getting kicked out by his mom, but Vayner took him in and gave him a place to stay. It's like the ultimate example of how people can turn on their benefactors when they're at their lowest.

I also find it super suspicious that Riabichev bought an 8-inch knife just hours before the attack πŸ€”. Was he planning this all along, or did he really have a psychotic break? And what's with the whole "psychotic break" excuse? Sounds like a classic cop-out to me. The fact that he called 911 and claimed it was a mistake just makes it even more bizarre. Anyways, my heart goes out to Vayner's family - this is truly devastating.
