A $100 Billion Chip Project Forced a 91-Year-Old Woman From Her Home

A 91-year-old woman's home has been the last holdout preventing a $100 billion Micron chip project from advancing, with Onondaga County officials threatening to use eminent domain to take it by force. The property owner, Azalia King, moved into her current residence in upstate New York in 1965, around the time mass production of microchips began. Now, she is on the verge of losing her home to make way for what could become the largest chipmaking complex in the US.

As the Trump administration's pressure tactics and tariffs policies draw manufacturing back to the country, such land disputes are becoming more common. Onondaga officials had struggled to fill a 1,400-acre plot of forested land in upstate New York, reportedly losing out on automotive, pharmaceutical, and tech companies until Micron stepped in.

The company's megafab project, which plans to produce memory chips for use in various electronics, could employ 9,000 people at its peak. However, King's plight has frustrated many in the region, with some community members expressing concerns about increased traffic and possible environmental impacts. Displacing King has been a prerequisite for the project's progression.

King sued Onondaga County Development Agency last month, claiming that any forced move would upend her life and violate her lifetime contract. In response, county officials made a fair offer to the family, addressing King's concerns while still being responsible with taxpayer funds.

Bob McNamara, deputy litigation director at the Institute for Justice, notes that King had a chance of winning her case but likely wouldn't want to spend years in litigation against a well-heeled county government burning taxpayer dollars. The author suggests that governments don't need to resort to displacing residents, especially when history shows that numerous projects never delivered on their initial promises.

Despite the controversy surrounding the project, Onondaga officials maintain that it is necessary for national security and will create economic opportunities for years to come. With King's family agreeing to a deal with local officials, her home will be relocated, and construction on the megafab can proceed.

Ugh, 9k people losing their homes over a chip factory? That's just crazy 🀯. Can't Onondaga County officials see that displacing one person for 100 billion is kinda a lot? Like, what's next? Taking down the entire neighborhood to make way for a new development? It feels like they're more worried about getting their chips than the people who live there πŸ€‘. And let's be real, what's the rush to get this factory up and running? Is it really that crucial for national security or is it just a fancy way of saying "we want our jobs back"? πŸ˜’

cant believe what's goin on here 🀯 this woman has been in that house since 1965 and now some faceless corp is tryna kick her out so they can make a quick buck? its all about the benjamins, folks πŸ’Έ meanwhile we got people worried about the environmental impact and increased traffic. i get it, the economy needs a boost but at what cost? can't these devs just find another spot for their chip factory or whats the hurry here? this whole thing is so messed up πŸ€”

πŸ€” I just don't get why the county officials have to kick Azalia out of her own home 🏠 like that... she's 91 years old, for crying out loud! πŸ™…β€β™€οΈ What's the rush to get this Micron chip factory built? 🚧 We've seen so many promises made and broken by these big corporations before. Like, what even is "national security" in this case? πŸ’Έ Are they gonna keep our homes safe from bad guys or something? πŸ˜‚ It just seems like a bunch of money grub to me...

I feel so bad for Azalia King πŸ€•. She's been living in that house since 1965! It's not just about her home, it's about her life and memories being torn away. I don't think anyone should have to go through that, especially when the government is trying to use eminent domain as a solution πŸ’”. The fact that they were able to offer her family a fair deal seems like a step in the right direction, but what about all the emotional distress this causes? It's just not worth it, you know? I mean, can't we find ways to make these megaprojects work without displacing people? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

πŸ€” This story is a real eye-opener, especially considering the history of this land. It's not just about Azalia King's house, it's about preserving her legacy and way of life. I mean, she's been there since 1965, what's a few thousand dollars to keep her home? πŸ€‘ And let's be real, 9,000 jobs are great, but what about the environment and quality of life for the locals? This is just another example of how the pursuit of progress can lead to some questionable decisions. ⚠️

OMG, 9k ppl will be employed there 🀯 but what about Azalia's life tho? She's been living in that home since '65! 😭 I mean, I get it, $100billion is a lotta cash πŸ’Έ, but can't they see she's not just fighting for her house, but for her memories too? My grandma would freak out if we even thought about displacing her from our own family heirloom 🏠❀️. And yeah, history shows that projects don't always deliver, but what choice does Onondaga County have? I guess they're trying to be responsible with taxpayer funds, but it's just so sad πŸ’”

πŸ™ This is getting so out of hand! Can't we just treat people with respect? I mean, Azalia King has been living in that house for like 60 years already... she's not some random person who's gonna sell out for a buck πŸ’Έ. And the fact that Onondaga County officials are using eminent domain to take her home is just cold 😊. What about her lifetime contract? Doesn't that count for anything? πŸ€”

And I'm so tired of governments making these promises and then breaking them like they're playing some kind of twisted game 🚫. "This will create jobs" or "this is necessary for national security"... yeah, sure... when's the last time we saw a project actually deliver on its promises? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

I'm all for economic growth and development, but not at the expense of people's lives and livelihoods πŸ’•. Can't we find a way to balance progress with compassion? 🀝

this is just so sad πŸ€• Azalia King has lived in her house since 1965, that's like, almost 60 years of memories. I feel bad for her, she doesn't deserve to lose her home because some company wants to build a chip factory. i mean, i get it, the project will bring jobs and stuff, but is it really worth displacing one person? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ what if they had just talked to her instead of trying to use eminent domain? this whole thing just feels so unfair πŸ˜”

This is just another example of how governments are willing to do whatever it takes to push through big projects, even if it means displacing innocent people... I mean, I get that Micron's project could bring in jobs and economic growth, but at what cost? 9,000 employees is a lot, but think about the families who have lived here for decades... 1,400 acres of forested land just got lost to development. We need to be more mindful of our values as a society... πŸŒ³πŸ’”

I'm so worried about Azalia King πŸ€•, I mean, 91 is old, she shouldn't have to go through this stress. I get that Onondaga County needs the $100 billion investment, but what's the rush? Can't they just find another spot for the chip factory? It's not like it's going to make or break their lives, you know? And 9,000 people might sound cool, but think about all the traffic and environmental concerns... it's a lot to swallow. Plus, King's lifetime contract is already a pretty big deal πŸ€“. I just wish they could've found a way to make this work without kicking her out of her home. It's not like it's going to happen again or something. We need more compassion in these situations, you know?

ugh how sad is this πŸ€• this old lady has been living in that house since 1965 and now she's gonna lose it to some big corporation πŸ€‘ micron is getting a sweet deal and the county is basically taking away someone's home for 'progress' πŸŒ† like what even is progress if u dont have ur home 🏠?

πŸ€” I'm so bummed about Azalia King's situation πŸ€•... she's been living in that house since 1965! The thought of someone being forced out of their home just to make way for a big project is really harsh πŸ˜“. On the other hand, Micron is bringing in some major jobs and investment πŸ’Έ - it's not like they're just going to make chips all day πŸ˜‚. But I do think we need more community input and consideration when it comes to projects like this 🀝. Maybe there are ways to find a compromise that works for everyone? 🀞

I just read about this lady who can't sell her house to Micron because they want it so badly πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. Like, I get it, they need the land but can't she just keep her home? It's like if someone came and told you your whole life was going to change, that's just mean πŸ˜”. And what about all the other people who are gonna be affected by this? Increased traffic and stuff... I don't know how she's gonna afford a new place πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ. I'm all for progress but not at the cost of one person's home 🏠.

πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ This is what happens when you try to make America great again... at the expense of grandma's house. I mean, come on 91 and she gets pushed out? That's just cold. I'm not surprised the county offered her a deal, it's like they're trying to win some kind of award for "most creative use of eminent domain". 9,000 jobs are great and all but what about Azalia King's life? She's not going anywhere, she's just being relocated... to nowheresville. πŸ˜’ This whole thing is just a mess, and I'm sure the environmental impacts will be totally worth it... right? πŸ’Έ

😊 I'm just so sad for Azalia King... she deserves our support! πŸ€— I mean, who needs that much pressure? The fact that Micron is moving back to the US after all those years of losing out on big companies because of tariffs is actually kinda cool πŸ’». And yeah, 9,000 jobs is a big deal for the community! πŸŽ‰ But can't we just find another way to make it work without kicking her out? πŸ˜” Maybe there's a compromise that could be reached between King and the county officials? 🀝 We should all be supporting Azalia in this tough time πŸ™Œ

This whole thing is just like what happened in Detroit when the auto industry left, except this time it's about jobs & economic growth πŸ€πŸ πŸ’Έ. I'm not saying Onondaga County officials are being unreasonable or anything, but come on, Azalia King has been living in that house since 1965! You'd think they could work out some kind of compromise, especially considering the history of development projects failing to deliver πŸ’”.

It's all about the politics, though 🀯. National security and economic growth are just buzzwords. What really matters is how this project affects local residents & small businesses πŸš§πŸ’Ό. I'd love to see more community input & transparent decision-making processes in place before we start displacing people πŸ˜’.

As for Bob McNamara's comment, yeah, sometimes governments do need to step in and make tough decisions πŸ‘Š. But can't they find a middle ground that benefits everyone? It's not like this is a hard issue πŸ€”...

aww man this woman is being so unfair to azalia king πŸ€— she shouldnt lose her home over this imo πŸ˜” it's not like micron is paying the rent or somethin' lol πŸ’Έ 9k jobs cant be worth displacing a whole family right? πŸ™…β€β™€οΈ especially when they've already been there for 50 yrs fam 😒 whats next gonna happen to all these other ppl in the neighborhood? πŸ€”

I don’t usually comment but I think this whole thing is super shady πŸ€”. 91-year-old Azalia King has been living in that house since 1965 and now she’s being forced to leave due to some big corporation's project. I mean, what even is the rush? Can't they just find somewhere else for the factory? It's not like it's the last home on earth 🌎.

And the fact that Onondaga officials are using eminent domain tactics is super concerning. I get that it's for national security and economic growth, but at what cost to one person's life? King’s case was already complicated with her lifetime contract, and now she’s gotta spend years in litigation against a well-heeled county government πŸ’Έ.

It just feels like corporations are getting more power than regular people, you know? And I don’t think that's right πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. Can't we just find a way to make progress without messing with people's homes and lives?

ugh I feel so bad for azalia king πŸ€• she's been living in that house since 1965 and now it's all being taken away from her. $100 billion is a lot of money but so is the value of her home and memories she made there. i get that micron needs space to expand, but can't they just find another spot? eminent domain is already super stressful for communities, why do we need more drama πŸ™„
