“Abolish ICE” Is More Popular Than Ever. How Will Democrats Drop the Ball This Time?

The fight to dismantle the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency has gained momentum, with more Americans supporting the "Abolish ICE" movement than ever before. However, it appears that the Democratic establishment is still dragging its feet on this critical issue.

Since the beginning of January, Minneapolis has been under siege by a 2,000-strong federal occupation force sent by the Trump administration to crack down on the city's Somali population. The situation has escalated to include tear gas, beatings, and the heinous killing of Renee Good at the hands of an ICE agent. These events have sparked widespread outrage and calls for the abolition of ICE.

Despite this, many establishment Democrats are still hesitant to take a strong stance against ICE. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey initially declared that ICE should leave the city but later softened his tone on Fox News. Senator Chris Murphy has called on ICE to comply with the law, while Representative Darren Soto has dismissed the idea of terminating the agency.

The Democratic Party's powerbrokers seem committed to hedging their bets and finding common ground with deeply unpopular positions. This approach is likely to cost them dearly at the voting booth, as they have made similar mistakes in the past that have resulted in losses for Democrats.

In contrast, progressive voices like Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are pushing for a more radical approach. They argue that abolishing ICE would be a significant step towards defending democracy and upholding the principles of the Constitution.

The numbers suggest that the tide is turning against ICE. A recent poll found that 46% of Americans support abolishing the agency, while only 43% oppose it. This shift in public opinion is likely to put pressure on Democrats to take a stronger stance.

However, as long as they continue to prioritize incremental reforms over bold action, Democrats will struggle to win back power and represent the views of their constituents. The time has come for them to get closer to fighting to take away ICE's funding and dismantle the agency altogether – an approach that is increasingly becoming the moderate position on this issue.

In a broader context, the crisis unfolding in Minneapolis highlights the dangers of authoritarianism and the erosion of democratic values in the United States. As the Intercept reports, the Trump administration is engaged in a full-scale takeover of the US government, with court orders being ignored and MAGA loyalists taking charge of federal law enforcement agencies.

This situation demands bold action from those who value truth, justice, and democracy. The fight to dismantle ICE must be part of this broader struggle against authoritarianism and for the protection of our fundamental freedoms.

As the Intercept editor-in-chief Ben Messig puts it, "The time has come for us to take a stand." Will you join the conversation?

ICE is just an excuse for the dems to do nothing about real issues. They're more worried about being seen as "moderates" than standing up for what's right. And honestly, I think it's all part of the same problem - they can't even be bothered to support their own people when it comes down to it... 🤷‍♂️

And let's not forget, this is just another example of how out of touch the establishment Dems are with regular folks. They're more concerned with getting re-elected than actually fighting for justice and equality. It's disgusting. 😒

I don't get why ppl r so mad at ICE. I mean, they're just doin their job, tryin to keep the country safe and all that 🤷‍♂️. It's not like they're out there makin some stuff up or nothin' 😒. And yeah, maybe some of 'em might be a bit... rough around the edges, but that don't mean they ain't doin their best 👊.

And I'm with Rep Ocasio-Cortez on this one - abolishin ICE is like, the next step in takin down all these systemic issues we got 🌟. But at the same time, I get why some folks might be thinkin it's a bit extreme 💯. Can't we just find some common ground and try to make things better without throwin the baby out with the bathwater? 🤔

And btw, what's the big deal about Minneapolis right now? It sounds like a whole lotta drama for one city 🗽️. I mean, I know the Somali population's got some issues too, but can't we just have a respectful convo and figure things out instead of resortin to tear gas and violence 💨?

I think we need more dialogue, not less 📚. We need to listen to each other's perspectives and try to find ways to work together 💕. And yeah, maybe that means makin some tough decisions and takin a stand, but it's worth it in the end 💯

the democratic party is being super cautious on this whole ice thing 🤔. they should just own the issue and say that abolishing ice is a matter of upholding democracy and the constitution. instead they're trying to find common ground with republicans who are basically saying "let's keep ice around so we can continue to oppress x, y, and z communities" 🚫. it's not gonna work out for them if they don't take a stronger stance on this 💪

ICE is like a bad cold that's been lingering in America for far too long 🤧. It's time for Democrats to stop playing nice and show some real backbone. 46% of Americans want it abolished, which is like the majority wanting a new iPhone every year 📱. They need to take a stand against this agency that's been causing so much harm, especially to communities of color. And let's be real, Trump's admin is just making things worse with their authoritarian tactics 😒. It's time for Democrats to step up and fight for what's right, not just play politics as usual 🤦‍♀️.

🤯 OMG u guys like how democrats r all over the place on this whole abolishing ice thing?? some ppl think they should just let go of it completely 🚫 while others are all about compromise 😒 but let's be real, if the dems wanna stay in power, they gotta take a stand 👊 especially with that recent poll showing 46% of americans support abolishing ice 🤯👏

I'm getting so frustrated with the slow pace of change in the US 🤯. The whole situation with ICE is just unacceptable and it's amazing how some politicians are still dragging their feet on this one 😒. I mean, 46% of Americans want to abolish the agency - that's a clear indication that people are fed up with the status quo 💪.

It's time for Democrats to take a strong stance against ICE and not be afraid to challenge the powers that be 💥. We need bold action, not just incremental reforms 🤔. And it's not just about abolishing ICE - we need to address the broader issues of authoritarianism and erosion of democratic values in the US 🚨.

We can't let the Trump administration's takeover of the government go unchecked 😳. It's time for us to stand up for truth, justice, and democracy 💯. If you're not already, it's time to join the conversation and demand change 🗣️.

omg can u believe what's going on in Minneapolis?? like 2000 strong agents just showing up and causing so much harm to innocent ppl 🤯🚫 it's sickening! i think our senators need to step up their game and take a clear stance against ICE once and for all 🙏 the numbers dont lie, people are seriously ready for change 📈 46% support abolishing ICE, that's huge! we need our leaders to listen to us and fight for what's right 💪

ICE is like that one aunt who just won't leave... 🤯 But seriously, can't the Dems just pick a side already? It's not like they're going to win any friends with their lukewarm stance on abolishing ICE. I mean, 46% of Americans are down to ditch the whole thing, and those establishment Democrats are still trying to find common ground with Trump's crew? 🤦‍♂️ Not gonna happen, fam! It's time for them to take a stand and fight for what's right, even if it means ruffling some feathers. And can we talk about how Minneapolis is getting taken over by the feds? 😷 This authoritarian takeover vibe is straight up scary, folks. We need to take a page out of AOC's book and demand some serious change! 💪

🚨ICE should totally get abolished! The way they're treating the Somali community in Minneapolis is just outrageous. 46% of Americans are with me on this one 🤝 and I think it's time for the Democratic Party to step up their game. They can't keep playing it safe and expecting people to still vote for them. We need bold action, not incremental reforms 🚫.

I'm loving Rep. AOC's radical approach to this - taking down ICE is a huge step towards defending democracy and our Constitution 📜. The fact that the Democratic establishment is so slow on the uptake is just frustrating. They're playing into Trump's hands and giving him a victory on this one 👊.

We need more people like Rep. AOC speaking truth to power and pushing for real change. The Intercept's Ben Messig gets it right when he says we need to take a stand 🗣️. Who's with me? 🤝

🤦‍♂️ I'm so done with the whole ICE thing. It's time for those in power to get on board with abolishing the agency already! I mean, 46% of Americans are like "nah, we're good without ICE" 🤷‍♂️. We need more people speaking out against this stuff and demanding real change. Can't our politicians just be honest with us for once? 🙄
