Alexander-Arnold is marginalised in Madrid but may not need a cult of Trent | Jonathan Liew

Trent Alexander-Arnold is a player who has found himself at the center of a media firestorm, with many questioning his decision to leave Liverpool for Real Madrid. While some have praised his progress, others have seized on any perceived misstep, including his claimed language skills and recent exclusion from Thomas Tuchel's England squad.

The issue here isn't necessarily about Alexander-Arnold himself, but rather the toxic culture of football fandom that has emerged in recent years. The internet economy and social media discourse have created a self-reinforcing cycle of criticism and outrage, where players are judged not just on their performances on the pitch, but also on their perceived loyalty to clubs and their personal choices off the pitch.

Alexander-Arnold's decision to leave Liverpool for Real Madrid has been seen by some as a betrayal, with fans booing him upon his return. But this reaction is often driven by tribalism and a desire to maintain a sense of belonging to a particular club or community. It's a phenomenon that is mirrored in the way players like Harry Kane and Ousmane Dembélé are treated by their own supporters.

In reality, Alexander-Arnold is a unique player who defies easy categorization. He has brought a new level of skill and creativity to the right-back position, and his ability to play both defense and offense makes him an invaluable asset to any team.

While some may argue that he isn't quite living up to expectations at Real Madrid, it's unfair to judge him solely on his performances in the Spanish capital. He has been hampered by injuries and a lack of game time under Xabi Alonso, but with more opportunities to shine, he could yet prove himself as one of the top defenders in the world.

Ultimately, Alexander-Arnold's future will depend on his ability to adapt to new surroundings and overcome the challenges that come with playing for Real Madrid. But if he can continue to do what he does best – play with style, skill, and a sense of purpose – then there is no reason why he shouldn't become one of the biggest stars in football.

It's worth noting, however, that the way Alexander-Arnold is being treated by his own fans has created a worrying trend. If supporters can turn on their own players so quickly and with such venom, it's a sign of a deeper problem within the football fandom itself. And if we want to create a more positive and supportive culture around our beloved sport, then we need to start questioning this toxic dynamic and think about how we can change it.

For now, though, Alexander-Arnold is still a player with a lot to offer, and his talent should be judged on the pitch rather than off it.

😊 I'm so late to this thread but I had to weigh in... I think its wild that people are still going on about Trent's language skills 🤷‍♂️ like it's a major issue. Newsflash: everyone makes mistakes, even if they're on the BBC 📺! And honestly, can we talk about how toxic it is to boo him when he comes back to Anfield? That's just savage 😒. I get that fans have high expectations, but shouldn't we be supporting our players rather than tearing them down? I still think Trent's a top player and will continue to dominate on the pitch 🏆.

omg u gotta wonder wut's gone rong wif football fans rn lol theyre more toxic den ever!! like trent alexander-arnold makes 1 small mistake n suddenly hes a traitor 2 liverpool 4eva!!! its all abt tribalism n wanting 2 feel part of somethin. i feel 4 him, he's an amazin player & shud b judged on his footy skills not wha happened off pitch.

ive seen it happn w/ harry kane & oussmane dembélé too - their fans r just as bad!!! its time 4 a change & 4 fans 2 support their faves even wen they make mistakes. lets focus on the game & not be so harsh 2 players who ar human 2o

I mean, come on... trent's gotta deal with the drama from his own fans 🤦‍♂️? Like, I get it, loyalty to Liverpool is one thing, but this toxic fandom is getting out of hand. Everyone's so quick to trash him on the internet and in the stands just because he made a "betrayal" move to Madrid... boo hoo, poor trent 🙄.

And let's not forget, the lad's still got skills for days out there 🏟️. His decision to leave Liverpool was gonna make waves no matter what, but this whole thing is just extra 🤯. We're supposed to be supporting our favorite players, not tearing them apart over a few Twitter rants 😂.

It's like, can we please focus on the footy instead of creating more drama? 🏆 Alexander-Arnold's still got game, and if he keeps delivering, we should just be excited for it 🎉.

ugh its so frustrating watching trent alexander-arnold get slaughtered online for just making a decision about his future...like who even gets to decide how our football heroes live their lives? 🤦‍♂️ i mean we're all guilty of jumping on the bandwagon and taking shots at players when they don't fit our narrative, but its not fair to trash him like this. he's an amazing player with so much skill and creativity...has anyone seen him play for england lately? 🙄

anyway, im so tired of this toxic culture that has taken over football fandom...its all about clicks and likes and drama...can we please just focus on the game itself for once? 🤬 we're all human beings here, and our football heroes are people too...they deserve some respect and understanding when they make a mistake or choose to leave a club. lets try to be more supportive and less judgmental, okay? 🙏

I feel like some fans are taking it out on Trent too much 🤔. I mean, he's made a big move to Real Madrid and that's not always easy to do. He's still got so much to offer on the pitch, but the internet is making him pay for his personal choices? It's just not fair 💸.

I think we need to take a step back and think about why fans are so invested in their teams 🤷‍♂️. Is it because we genuinely care about the players or is it because we want to belong to a certain group? I'm not saying Trent has betrayed anyone, but his fans should be supporting him through thick and thin, not booing him when he makes a mistake 😐.

We need to find a way to create a more positive culture around football, where players can make mistakes without being torn apart by their own fans 🙏. We're always talking about how important it is to support the players off the pitch, but what about when they mess up on the pitch? Can't we just focus on their football skills instead of their personal lives? 🤔

TBH, I'm so over these fans who can't take a break from trashing their own players 🙄. Like, come on guys, you booed Trent when he came back to Liverpool... what's next? Beating up him in person? That toxic fandom culture needs to be addressed ASAP 💔. It's not fair to the player and it's creating a really negative vibe around the sport. Can't we just support them when they make mistakes on the pitch, like we're supposed to? 🤷‍♂️

man I'm so over this tribalism thing in football 🙄... it's like fans are more concerned about who's playing for their "arch-rivals" than actually watching them play. Alexander-Arnold got a bad rap just 'cause he left Liverpool, but honestly who wouldn't wanna move to Real Madrid? It's not like he's abandoning ship or anything 😂. And yeah the booing when he came back was pretty harsh... I mean I get it fans are passionate, but can't we just support our players no matter what? 💔. The whole thing is a bit of a shame 'cause Trenty (as we should call him lol) is an incredible player 🤩, and it's not fair to judge him solely on his performances at Real Madrid.

TBH, I feel for Trenty 😂, he's getting roasted online like crazy just cuz he left Liverpool. Like, chill out, fam! 🤣 The problem isn't Alexander-Arnold, it's the toxic fandom culture that's taken over the internet. People are more interested in being contrarians than actually supporting their team or players. And let's be real, if you boo someone who just left your club, that's some serious shade 💁‍♂️. Maybe we should focus on praising the players' skills instead of their personal choices? 😜
