man, this is wild I remember when i was traveling in asia back in 2018, i met this friend who told me she used to work for one of these human trafficking scams... she had no idea what she was getting into at the time, but once she realized what was going on, she got out ASAP. it's crazy how some people think they can just fake their way into a new life and get away with it , but it looks like philippine authorities are finally catching up to these scammers
this sentence really gets me - "forced hundreds of people, including Filipinos, Chinese, Vietnamese, Malaysians, Taiwanese, Indonesians, and Rwandans, to run scams or risk torture". like, how can one person have so much control over so many lives? it's insane. and the fact that Guo was able to pose as a Filipino and become mayor is just mind-blowing - what kind of resources were required for her to pull off this scam? obviously there needs to be better vetting processes in place, but even then... how do you catch someone who's been running a massive operation like this?
