Mother's Desperate Attempt to Exchange Info Turns Violent, Ending in Aggravated Assault Charge
A Texas woman has been charged with aggravated assault after pulling out a gun on a man who got into a car accident with her family member. The incident occurred on January 1st when the man was driving on Westpark Drive when his car was hit from behind by a blue Chevrolet pickup truck with no license plates.
The pickup truck then fled the scene, prompting the man to follow it for several minutes in an attempt to exchange information with the driver. A silver Toyota Camry intervened, and a woman got out of the vehicle, pointing a 9mm gun at the man. She allegedly claimed that he was chasing her daughter and had hit her.
The woman demanded the man's information at gunpoint before eventually returning to her car. However, the man reportedly fled the scene, fearing for his life. Harris County detectives reached out to the woman on January 14th, who identified herself as Crystal Melendez.
In interviews with detectives, Melendez claimed that she intercepted a pursuit involving her son and acted out of fear due to prior unrelated shooting incidents involving her family members. However, she denied exiting her car or pointing the gun at the victim. The court records show that Melendez admitted to having removed a handgun from her waistband during the incident.
Melendez has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and is currently being held in the Harris County Jail, awaiting arraignment.
