China has launched an emergency spacecraft, Shenzhou-22, to rescue three astronauts stranded on its space station, Tiangong, after a damaged return capsule made it unsafe for humans. The uncrewed mission was sparked by debris from the Shenzhou-20 spacecraft, which is currently docked at the Tiangong station and unable to carry crew members safely back to Earth.
The astronauts, Zhang Lu, Wu Fei, and Zhang Hongzhang, who arrived on the space station in April for a six-month stay, had initially planned to return home using Shenzhou-21. However, when they needed to disembark from Tiangong, there was no suitable spacecraft available, leaving them without a way to escape the orbit.
State broadcaster CCTV showed the launch of the Long March-2F rocket carrying the Shenzhou-22 spacecraft from China's Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre on Tuesday. The mission marks a rare setback for China's rapidly expanding space program, which aims to send astronauts to the moon by 2030.
The incident highlights Beijing's efforts to catch up with other space-faring nations like the US, Russia, and Europe, where billions have been invested in recent decades. In 2022, China became the third country to put humans into orbit after the US and former Soviet Union.
