Christy review – Sydney Sweeney pummels a boxing pioneer's story into lifeless cliche

Sydney Sweeney's lackluster performance in "Christy" suffocates an otherwise promising story about a pioneering female boxer, reducing it to a soulless cliché. Director David Michôd's uninspired approach leaves the film feeling undirected and unengaging.

The biopic follows Christy Salters Martin, a trailblazer who rose to become the world's most successful female boxing champion in the 90s and 00s under the tutelage of Don King. However, outside the ring, she faced a nightmare of misogyny that is woefully neglected by Michôd. The film fails to deliver the emotional depth and visceral intensity one would expect from a true story about domestic abuse and coercive control.

Sweeney's portrayal of Christy feels flat and uncharacterized, with her character development stunted throughout the film. Meanwhile, Ben Foster's Jim Martin, Christy's husband-manager, receives more attention, thanks in part to his iconic combover and paunch – a far cry from any genuine emotional resonance.

The film's reliance on tired clichés, such as Christy's transformation into a formidable boxer, feels shallow and unearned. The production's lack of investment in the details of true crime is also glaringly evident, particularly when it comes to depicting the brutal abuse Christy suffered at the hands of her husband.

The only notable exception is Chad Coleman's scene-stealing cameo as Don King, who brings a much-needed spark to an otherwise dull film. The supporting cast, including Merritt Wever as Christy's mother Joyce, is wasted in underdeveloped roles that add little to the narrative.

Perhaps the greatest tragedy of "Christy" is its missed opportunity to explore the complexities of Christy's journey. Instead, it settles for a predictable and unengaging arc that fails to deliver any real sense of tension or emotional resonance. Sydney Sweeney has already proven her acting chops in films like "Reality," but this disappointing performance leaves much to be desired.

"Christy" hits theaters on November 28th in the UK and Ireland, and January 8th in Australia.

I'm so confused about why they chose Sydney Sweeney for this role... I mean, she's super talented and all, but her performance here feels really off-putting 🤔. It's like the film is just phoning it in, you know? The whole thing just feels so predictable and clichéd... I was expecting something way more powerful and emotional, especially given the true story behind it 💔. And don't even get me started on how they handled Christy's abuse situation - it felt really glossed over and not very impactful at all 😒. I mean, what would you expect from a biopic about someone who went through something so traumatic? 🤷‍♀️. I think the director just missed an opportunity to make this into something truly special... 👎

I just saw this review of the new biopic "Christy" about a pioneering female boxer 🥊 and I gotta say, it's really disappointing 😔. The film sounds like it had so much potential but instead feels like a shallow retelling of her story 🤷‍♀️. Sydney Sweeney's character development is basically non-existent in my opinion 🚫. It's like they took the raw emotion and intensity out of Christy's true story and replaced it with tired clichés 💔. And don't even get me started on the lack of attention to detail when it comes to her abuse situation 😕. I mean, you can tell they were trying to create a sympathetic character but instead they just came off as shallow and unengaging 🤦‍♀️. Chad Coleman's cameo is the only thing that brought some life to this film 🌟, otherwise it's just a whole lot of meh 😐.

I'm soooo underwhelmed by this movie 🤯🎥. I mean, Christy's story is literally one of the most inspiring true stories out there - a female boxing champion who overcame SO much to get where she was, only to face all sorts of misogyny and abuse at home... and they just kinda... phoned it in 📞💤. Sydney Sweeney's performance was straight up boring 😴 and the only thing that kept me awake was Chad Coleman as Don King 💥 - now THAT'S some acting talent! And don't even get me started on the wasted potential of Merritt Wever's role 🙄... I just wanted to be invested in Christy's journey, but this film just gave me a big ol' shrug 😐. Can we please get a better adaptation of her story?! 🤷‍♀️

OMG I completely agree with you about this movie 🤯! I went into it thinking it was gonna be a total knockout (pun intended) but honestly, Sydney Sweeney's performance was so underwhelming 😴. I mean, she's shown her range in other movies like "Reality" and "Euphoria", but here she just feels stuck in neutral ⛔️. The rest of the cast is wasted too, Merritt Wever's character feels like an afterthought 🙄. And don't even get me started on the clichés - it's like they took every boxing movie trope and mashed them all together into one boring mess 😒. Only Chad Coleman's Don King scene brings some much-needed energy to the film ⚡️!
