City starts ticketing speeding drivers on Broad Street with automated cameras

Broad Street Speed Cameras Now in Effect, Issuing Fines to Excessive Speeders

For the first time since the installation of speed cameras along Broad Street last September, drivers exceeding 25 mph limits will no longer receive only warnings. The city's 60-day grace period has ended, and tickets will now be mailed out to those caught speeding.

The fine for those who speed between 11-19 mph over the limit is $100, while a violation of 20-29 mph over costs an additional $25, and any amount above 30 mph incurs a penalty of $50. The cameras are designed to curb car accidents on Route 611, which includes Broad Street, particularly after a series of fatal crashes that resulted in 206 serious injury incidents between 2020 and 2024.

"This is one of our busiest and most hazardous roads," Mayor Cherelle Parker said at the time of camera installation. "Speed cameras will undoubtedly save lives." The speed cameras are an expansion of the city's enforcement program, which was first introduced on Roosevelt Boulevard in 2020. The program has seen a significant decrease in fatal accidents, with incidents dropping by 21% and speeding tickets plummeting by 93%.

Now that the cameras are operational, drivers will face harsher penalties for their actions, leaving some to wonder whether they can avoid being caught.

omg i know ppl r sayin its too harsh but like come on 100+ fine 4 goin 5 over the limit is def worth it if u dont wanna end up in hospital cuz of a stupid mistake! 🚨😬 those fatal crashes last year were super devastating & we cant let that happen again. and btw, its not just about ppl speeding but also about the fact that most drivers rnt even payin attention to the road while on their phones lol 😂

🚗💸 I think it's about time we started taking speeding seriously in this city 🙄. I mean, 206 serious injury incidents between 2020 and 2024 is a number that should give us all pause 😱. The cameras are not just about saving lives, they're also about setting an example for other drivers who might be tempted to speed. $100-$50 fines aren't exactly crippling, but it's enough to make people think twice before hitting the gas pedal 🤔. Plus, with a 21% drop in fatal accidents since the program started, I'd say we should be seeing more of these cameras popping up all over town 📈. Who knows, maybe one day they'll even start targeting those pesky roadies who always seem to be speeding 🚗👀.

I'm low-key concerned about these new speed cameras 🤔. I get it, safety first and all, but $100+ fines? That's a lot to pay just for rolling through a yellow light 🚦. What if you're already stressed from rush hour traffic? The city's gotta find a balance between keeping people safe and not being too harsh on drivers who are just trying to get by ⏱️. Can't we just have some common sense driving rules instead of relying on cameras all the time? 🤷‍♀️

Ugh 🙄 I'm so sick of these speed cameras! They're always popping up in the most inconvenient places and now you gotta pay a ton of money if you even come close to breaking the limit 😬. Like what's the point of having a 60-day grace period? Just more time for people to get complacent and then BAM, they're getting fined 💸. And $100+ is not cheap 🤑. I know accidents can be bad, but do we really need cameras to tell us how fast to drive? Can't we just follow the speed limit without being watched all the time? 🤦‍♀️ This city's always trying to make more money off us...
