Dead whale found on bow of ship at South Jersey port prompts investigation

A massive fin whale has been found dead and beached on the bow of a ship at the Gloucester Marine Terminal in South Jersey, prompting a federal investigation into the circumstances surrounding its death.

According to wildlife officials, the 25-30 foot long carcass was discovered by the U.S. Coast Guard's Delaware Bay sector around 11:15 pm Sunday night. The marine mammal, an endangered species that typically inhabits waters from New York south to Cape May, is believed to have been caught on the bow of an unidentified ship.

Experts from the Marine Mammal Stranding Center (MMSC) were dispatched to the scene Monday morning to conduct a necropsy and determine the cause of death. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Office of Law Enforcement will lead the investigation, which is part of a larger effort to understand the recent surge in stranding events involving humpback whales.

The discovery has sparked renewed debate about the potential impact of offshore wind development on marine life in the region. While some have suggested that wind surveying and construction activities may be contributing to whale deaths, federal agencies have found no conclusive evidence to support these claims. In many cases, stranded whales have been found with injuries consistent with ship strikes or entanglement in fishing nets.

In fact, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy recently announced $3.7 million in funding for ecological research on offshore wind energy and whale behavior in the state's offshore wind lease areas. The industry has faced significant economic challenges and political opposition from the Trump administration, which paused leases for several East Coast projects citing national security risks.

The discovery of this fin whale has raised questions about the safety of marine life in the region and the potential environmental impacts of offshore wind development. As the investigation continues, MMSC will provide updates on its findings at the Gloucester Marine Terminal.

I'm still trying to process this one 🀯. Beached whales are never easy to see, but it's especially heartbreaking when they're as big as fin whales πŸ˜”. I mean, can you even imagine being out there in the open ocean, minding your own business, and then suddenly finding yourself on someone else's bow? It's just not right πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ.

I think we need to keep talking about this offshore wind development stuff, though. I'm all for clean energy, but if it's gonna harm marine life like this... we gotta be extra careful πŸ’‘. The gov't's already doing some research, but I hope they're taking the time to listen to the experts and get a handle on what's really going on πŸ€“.

It's crazy how quickly we can go from "oh, wind farms are great!" to "wait, maybe not so fast..." πŸ”„. I just wish we could find that balance between progress and protection for our planet's amazing creatures 🌊❀️

OMG 🀯😱 That's so sad for that fin whale 🐳🌊. Beached and dead on a ship is just awful πŸ˜”. I'm thinking some of those wind surveying ships might be the culprits πŸš’πŸ‘€. They gotta do more research to figure out what's goin' on with all these whales stranding πŸ€•πŸ’¦. Offshore wind development can't hurt, but maybe we need to be more careful πŸ’‘. $3.7 million for eco-research is a good start πŸ’Έ. Hope the MMSC finds some answers soon πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™€οΈπŸ³

OMG u guys r gonna freak out lol! So theres dis fin whale just chillin on a ship in South Jersey 🐳😱 and now theres a huge investigation goin on cuz ppl wanna know why it died πŸ€”. Its like, we no offshore wind is comin but does it really harm whales tho? 🌬️ I mean, some ppl say it might b cause of ship strikes or gettin caught in fishing nets πŸš£β€β™€οΈ but others think its just a coincidence πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. What do u guys tink should b done? Should we be worried about the impact on whales? πŸ‹πŸ’”

🌊 It's a shame that we're still dealing with these kinds of incidents happening to marine life 🐳. I think it's great that experts are getting involved and trying to figure out what happened to this fin whale πŸ’‘. The offshore wind development debate is a tough one, but I think we need to have more research and data on the impact it's having on our oceans πŸ“Š.

It's not like we're not aware of the risks, but it seems like every now and then there's a fin whale that gets caught in the crossfire πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. Let's hope that this investigation brings some answers and maybe even some solutions to prevent these kinds of incidents in the future πŸ’ͺ. The $3.7 million funding is a good start, but I think we need more transparency and collaboration between industries and governments to make sure our oceans are protected 🌴.

this is so sad πŸ³πŸ˜” the thought of a massive fin whale getting beached like that must've been super scary for the crew on the ship... 25-30 ft long is huge! i guess the investigation will try to figure out what happened but its wild how some ppl think offshore wind dev could be harming whales tho idk if theres any real proof yet πŸ€”πŸŒŸ anyway, its a big deal and hopefully they can learn more from this so it doesn't happen again

πŸ³πŸ˜” I mean, can you believe it? A beautiful fin whale just laying there, beached and dead... it's like something out of a movie πŸŽ₯. And to think it happened right in front of the ship, which is pretty wild 😲. But what really gets me is that we're still debating about whether offshore wind development is affecting marine life or not πŸ€”. I mean, come on, we can't just ignore the fact that whales are getting hurt and dying... that's some pretty clear evidence right there πŸ™„.

And you know what's even more frustrating? We've got all these fancy research studies being funded to try and figure out if wind development is causing harm πŸ“Š. I'm not saying it can't be, but we need to take action now, not just sit around and collect data 😩. These whales are already struggling, we shouldn't have to wait for some scientific study to tell us what's going on πŸ³πŸ’”.

Anyway, let's hope the investigation finds out what really happened to this poor guy... πŸ•°οΈ

Ugh, another beached whale πŸ³πŸ˜”... it's like they're just piling up over here. I mean, don't get me wrong, fin whales are amazing creatures and all, but can't we figure out how to keep them safe while also developing our energy sources? πŸ’‘ The debate about offshore wind development and marine life is getting old, especially when it comes down to "no conclusive evidence" πŸ€”. I'm not saying the industry is guilty or anything, but come on... a $3.7 million study isn't gonna cut it if we're still seeing whales washing up like this. We need more concrete info and action plans πŸ’ͺ. This just makes me think that maybe we should be focusing on ways to prevent these strandings in the first place πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ rather than just reacting to each individual incident.

🐳😞 The finding of a massive fin whale beached on a ship's bow is super worrying. You got to wonder if it was indeed a result of a ship strike or entanglement in fishing nets, which kinda sucks for the poor whale πŸ€•. On another note, I think the fact that offshore wind development might be contributing to these events isn't entirely far-fetched...but we need more concrete evidence before we can say for sure πŸŒͺ️.

It's a tough spot for marine life and new industries like offshore wind to navigate. Perhaps exploring ways to minimize the impact of their operations on whale habitats is key? πŸ€” I'd love to see some eco-friendly solutions come out of this investigation πŸ’‘. The fact that there hasn't been conclusive evidence so far doesn't mean we should just shrug it off, but at the same time, no clear answers aren't an excuse for inaction either...there's gotta be a balance 🌈.

πŸ€” I'm tellin' ya, this fin whale thingy is fishy 🐟. Like, what's really goin' on here? The gov't is sayin' it's just a ship strike or entanglement, but I'm thinkin' there's more to it than that. I mean, we're already seein' all these whales strandin' themselves and dyin', and now this one beached in the middle of Gloucester Marine Terminal? That's like, what are the chances, right? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ And don't even get me started on the offshore wind development. I'm not sayin' it's definitely causin' all these whale deaths, but somethin' ain't addin' up. Maybe there's some sorta cover-up goin' on? I'd want to know more about this investigation and what they're really lookin' into πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™‚οΈ.

Ugh, great, another poor fin whale just chillin' on a ship's bow πŸ³πŸ˜’. Can't believe this is just happening in our own backyard 🌊. I mean, offshore wind development has been proposed for ages and now we're seeing more whales getting caught in the crossfire πŸ’”. It's like the industry is just too greedy to care about marine life 🀯. And now they're saying it's not conclusive evidence? Like, come on, how many more whales need to die before we get some answers? πŸ™„. Gov Murphy thinks $3.7 million is gonna make a difference? That's cute πŸ’Έ. We need actual action, not just a Band-Aid solution πŸ€•.

🐳🚨 OMG, have you seen that massive fin whale just beached on a ship in South Jersey? 🀯 25-30 ft long, it's like something out of a horror movie! Anyway, did you know that fin whales are endangered and only found in waters from NY to Cape May? 🌊

According to the MMSC, this whale was likely caught by a ship with no ID. And get this - there have been other whales stranding events happening recently with humpback whales. Stats show that 75% of all marine mammal strandings are due to ship strikes or entanglement in fishing nets πŸ“ŠπŸš’

It's crazy how much money is being poured into offshore wind energy research right now - $3.7 million! πŸ€‘ That's a lot of cash, but will it be enough to prevent more whale deaths? πŸ€”

Here are some more stats:
- 1 in 5 whales die from ship strikes each year (🚒)
- The US has lost over 10% of its global offshore wind energy potential due to lack of permits and regulatory issues (πŸŒͺ️)
- There were over 50 reported whale strandings in the US last year alone! 🐳😱

Can we really afford to gamble with our marine life? πŸ’Έ Only time will tell, but for now, let's hope these scientists can figure out what happened to this poor whale and how we can prevent more tragedies like this from happening 🀝

πŸ³πŸ˜” just saw that fin whale found dead on ship... so sad! πŸ€• it's like, what happened to this poor creature? 🌊 was it a ship strike or something else? 🚒 I'm no expert but it's hard not to think about the impact of offshore wind development on marine life in the area... πŸ’‘ maybe we need more research and funding to figure out what's going on? πŸ€”

🌊 Ugh, just another sad day for our ocean πŸ³πŸ’” that fin whale beached on the ship bow in South Jersey 😷. I mean, we all knew it was a risk with offshore wind development coming up but I guess we didn't realize the impact would be this real 🀯. I'm all for clean energy and jobs but can't we find a way to do it without harming our marine life? πŸ™„ Those federal agencies gotta dig deeper and get to the bottom of what's really happening out there πŸ’ͺ. And $3.7 million is just not enough considering how big this issue is πŸ€‘. Time for some real action and collaboration between devs, gov and wildlife experts 🀝.
