Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell running for California governor

California Set for Competitive Governor's Race as Swalwell Enters the Fray

Democrat Eric Swalwell, a fierce critic of former President Donald Trump, has thrown his hat into the ring for California's 2026 governorship. The 45-year-old Representative from California's 14th Congressional District made the announcement on his official campaign website and was met with a standing ovation when he revealed his candidacy during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

Swalwell touts himself as a fighter and protector of Californians, citing his years of experience in local government, law enforcement, and Congress. He's not afraid to take on tough issues, having previously clashed with Trump over various policy matters.

One area where Swalwell is likely to be tested is the Epstein case files. The Justice Department has promised to release the full contents of the files within 30 days, but Swalwell remains skeptical. "I don't trust that they'll come clean," he said in a statement, echoing concerns many have raised about Trump's handling of sensitive information.

Swalwell faces stiff competition from other high-profile Democrats, including former Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra, Rep. Katie Porter, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, and entrepreneur Tom Steyer, among others. On the Republican side, Swalwell will have to contend with pundits like Steve Hilton and Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco.

Swalwell's own history is marked by a presidential bid in 2020, during which he championed gun control measures, including an assault rifle ban. More recently, he's faced allegations of tax and mortgage fraud, with the Trump administration referring him to the Justice Department for further investigation. Swalwell has called these claims "nonsense" but acknowledges his contentious history with Trump.

As one of Trump's most vocal critics, Swalwell has a strong track record of taking on the former President and his associates in court. A current lawsuit against Trump alleges that his actions led to the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol.

With multiple candidates vying for attention, California voters are in for a contentious governor's race. The question remains: can Swalwell's unique blend of experience, policy savvy, and anti-Trump fervor propel him to victory?

Wow 💥 Swalwell's got some serious guts throwing his hat into the ring! He's been through the wringer with Trump and still comes out swinging 🤖 His anti-gun control stance is gonna be a major talking point though... Interesting 👀

I'm not surprised Eric Swalwell is throwing his hat into the ring, but I gotta say, his history is pretty checkered 🤔. I mean, we all know he's been a thorn in Trump's side, but has he really got the experience and skills to lead California? He's got some good points about taking on tough issues, but can he unite the state after all the divisions they've had?

And that Epstein case... yeah, I don't trust it either 😬. The Justice Department's not always been known for their transparency, so we'll have to wait and see how this plays out.

Competition-wise, Swalwell's got some tough opponents, but I think his anti-Trump vibe might actually work in his favor 🙌. Californians are still salty about Trump's presidency, so if he can tap into that anger and frustration... it could be a winning strategy.

But here's the thing: Swalwell's also got a pretty questionable past 🤷‍♂️. Allegations of tax and mortgage fraud? That's some serious baggage to carry around. Can he really put those issues behind him and focus on governing?

I'm gonna have to keep an eye on this one... it's gonna be an interesting ride! 🚨

I'm not sure if I fully trust Eric Swalwell to be the best fit for CA gov. He's got some major skeletons in his closet, like those tax & mortgage allegations 🤑. And don't even get me started on the whole Epstein case files thing... how can we really know what's going on there? 😐 Still, he does have some solid creds as a rep and all that jazz. I think he'll definitely be a contender, but I'm not sure if his baggage will catch up to him 🤔. On one hand, he's got some great policy ideas, especially when it comes to gun control. But on the other hand, can we really rely on someone with such a history of conflict with Trump? 🤷‍♂️

I'm not sure if Eric Swalwell is ready for this kinda thing 🤔 he's got some baggage, you know? I mean, those Epstein case files are still a mystery, and now the Justice Department's gonna drop all the info in one go... it's like throwing all the cards on the table. And what about that presidential bid of his back in 2020? That was some crazy stuff 🤯 He wants to ban assault rifles, but has he got the skills to actually make it happen? And then there's those tax and mortgage fraud allegations... I don't know if he's gonna be able to shake off that Trump drama 😬 Anyway, this is gonna be a wild ride for California. Can't wait to see how it all unfolds 🎢

🤔 this guy swalwell is like a wild card in california politics he's got a lot of baggage but also some major cred on taking on trump its gonna be interesting to see how his anti-trump vibes play out with the other dems who are already throwing their hats into the ring 🎩 maybe hes got a shot at it, but idk about those epstein case files and his past drama 🤦‍♂️
