Detroit's Wait is Over: RoboCop Statue Finally Unveiled After 15 Years of Waiting

In a city known for its resilience and determination, a group of fans has finally achieved the impossible - getting a statue of RoboCop installed in Detroit. The bronze monument, depicting the iconic cyborg law enforcement officer from Paul Verhoeven's 1987 sci-fi classic, was unveiled on Wednesday at Eastern Market, nearly two decades after the initial proposal.

The idea for a RoboCop statue first gained traction back in 2011 when someone with the Twitter handle @MT tweeted about how Detroit should have its own statue of the part-man, part-machine hero. The tweet sparked a wave of interest, and even caught the attention of then-Mayor Dave Bing's office. However, in response to the suggestion, Bing's team dismissed it, stating there were no plans to erect a statue.

But one fan, Brandon Walley, refused to give up on his dream. He launched a crowdfunding campaign that eventually raised over $60,000, allowing for the commission and construction of the statue by George Gikas of Venus Bronze Works. The project was plagued by years of setbacks and bureaucratic delays, but it has finally come to fruition.

Now, RoboCop stands proudly outside 3434 Russell St., a symbol of the city's determination to reclaim its place on the cultural map. With his cybernetic body and unwavering dedication to justice, the statue is sure to inspire both old and new fans of the franchise.

I mean, I'm not complaining or anything, but it took 15 years for this thing to happen 🤔. You'd think that a crowdfunding campaign with over $60k would've been enough to get things moving faster. The delays and bureaucratic stuff must have gotten in the way 🙄. But I guess it's great that RoboCop is finally standing tall outside Eastern Market, right? It's gonna be cool for fans of the franchise, but I'm curious - what took so long for this project to come together? Should've been quicker if they had more cash and a solid plan in place 💸.

just saw this & I'm hyped 🤩! been waiting 15 years for this moment and it's finally here!!! Detroit deserves a RoboCop statue after all they went through 💪. can't believe the crowdfunding campaign actually worked out 🎉. now we just need to see some cosplay events around town to bring in the fans 👮‍♂️. I'm glad someone refused to give up on this dream, Brandon Walley is a true fanboy 👍!
