Disney to invest $1bn in OpenAI, allowing characters in Sora video tool

Disney Unveils $1 Billion Investment in OpenAI to Spark New Era in Entertainment

In a major move to harness the power of artificial intelligence (AI), Walt Disney has announced a whopping $1 billion equity investment in OpenAI, the AI startup behind the popular Sora video generation tool. This unprecedented deal aims to bring Disney's beloved characters and stories into the realm of AI-generated content, marking a significant shift in the entertainment industry.

Under the terms of this three-year licensing agreement, users of Sora will be able to create short, user-prompted social videos that incorporate over 200 Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars characters. While this partnership is poised to revolutionize the way fans engage with their favorite franchises, it also raises questions about the use of likenesses and voices without consent.

Disney CEO Bob Iger described the deal as a "landmark agreement" that will empower imagination and creativity like never before. However, critics have long expressed concerns about AI's impact on jobs in the entertainment industry, including writers, actors, visual effects artists, and others.

In recent months, Sora has faced intense scrutiny over its use of copyrighted characters, including racist depictions of Martin Luther King Jr. and unauthorized portrayals of Disney icons. In response, OpenAI has banned the use of certain likenesses on the platform, while Disney itself has taken steps to protect its intellectual property by sending cease-and-desist letters to AI companies.

The new partnership between OpenAI and Disney may help alleviate some of these concerns, as the entertainment giant will use OpenAI's technology to build new products and tools. A selection of Sora-generated videos will also be available for streaming on the Disney+ platform, marking a significant expansion of the company's reach into AI-powered content creation.

For its part, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman hailed the deal as proof that AI companies can partner with the entertainment sector responsibly. "This agreement shows how AI companies and creative leaders can work together to promote innovation that benefits society, respect the importance of creativity, and help works reach vast new audiences," he said.

As the entertainment industry continues to navigate the complexities of AI-powered content creation, Disney's $1 billion investment in OpenAI marks an exciting new chapter in this rapidly evolving landscape.

🤖💸 so they're just gonna use AI to replace all those talented writers and actors? lol no seriously though, have you seen the videos generated by Sora yet? they're actually pretty cool! it's like having a magic machine that can bring your favorite characters to life. but at the same time, I get why there are concerns about consent and likenesses... it's like, imagine if someone took your face or your voice without asking 🤷‍♀️. still, i think this partnership could be pretty game-changing for Disney and AI companies. maybe we'll see some new and innovative ways to tell stories that actually benefit society 🎬💡

I'm so hyped about this partnership 🤩! I mean, who wouldn't want to see their fave Disney characters brought to life in a whole new way? But at the same time, I gotta wonder what's gonna happen to all those talented folks working behind the scenes - writers, actors, visual effects artists... are they just gonna get replaced by AI? 🤔 It's a valid concern, for sure. And what about them Sora vids that got taken down due to racist stuff? Do we really know OpenAI is gonna do better next time? 🤷‍♀️ Still excited to see where this partnership takes us though! The tech is definitely cool...

🤯 This is getting crazy 🚀! One billion bucks for a platform that's still trying to figure out what it does with all these famous faces 🤷‍♂️. I mean, I get it, AI is the future and all, but can't they just use some common sense? 😂

And don't even get me started on the copyright issues 🚫. I'm still mad about that Sora thing with Martin Luther King Jr. 🙅‍♂️. It's one thing to make mistakes, but it's another to not learn from them 🤦‍♂️.

I guess what bothers me is that it feels like Disney is just using OpenAI as a way to cash in on the AI hype 💸. I mean, sure, it's cool to see your favorite characters come to life in new ways, but at what cost? 🤑

But hey, who knows, maybe this partnership will actually lead to some amazing things 🎉. Maybe Disney and OpenAI can make something truly special together 🔥. Until then, I'll just be over here watching these AI-generated videos and wondering if they're even worth the hype 😐

Ugh, I'm getting so tired of these big brands just throwing money at AI companies without thinking about the consequences 🤯💸. A $1 billion investment is a lot to ask from just anyone, let alone a company that's already making billions. And what's with all these "landmark agreements" and "empowering imagination and creativity"? It sounds like corporate speak for "we're going to make some money off this new-fangled tech". 🤑

And have you seen the Sora platform? It's got some weird, racist stuff on it already... 🤦‍♂️. I'm all for pushing boundaries of AI, but come on! Protecting our cultural icons is important. Disney needs to make sure they're not just using this tech to cash in on their goodwill without giving a thought to the impact on creators and artists.

It's all about innovation and progress, yeah? But at what cost? 🤔 I just hope they don't end up hurting more people than helping.

ugh i dont know how much more disney needs 1 billion is already a lot who r we gonna pay now lol anyway i get that they wanna tap into ai but do they really need to invest so much? cant just use existing tools instead of making their own proprietary one it also makes me nervous about the rights and ownership of these characters...like whats going on with martin luther king jr?? how can openai even make a video of him without getting sued?! 🤯💸
