England v New Zealand netball: Eleanor Cardwell returns from career-threatening injury

England's netball star Eleanor Cardwell has returned to the sport after a career-threatening knee injury, just seven months after being told she may never play again.

The 31-year-old England shooter was forced into early retirement after suffering another severe knee injury during a training session in Australia while playing for Melbourne Mavericks. Cardwell had snapped one meniscus and suffered a full root detachment of her lateral meniscus during a three-match series against Australia in October last year.

"I just thought, I'm not finished, I don't feel like I'm finished, but my netball career is over," she said after feeling the pain again. The athlete had undergone surgery to repair the damage, but that only provided temporary relief.

Cardwell's recovery was smooth until a recent training session when she felt a cartilage injury again, prompting her to seek medical attention once more. After further scans, it became clear that the damage to her knee was fixable, and Cardwell underwent additional surgery and rehabilitation.

Despite being advised against playing due to the risk of further injury, Cardwell has always been determined to continue pursuing her passion for netball. "The loneliness overwhelmed me," she said about her experience in Australia while rehabbing. Having spent the majority of her Netball Super League (NSL) career with Manchester Thunder, who she calls 'family,' Cardwell is now back in England's squad as they prepare for a three-match series against New Zealand.

Cardwell believes that returning to Australia has made sense for her and her career, allowing her to reconnect with the sport. "I wouldn't say I'm finished in the SSN (Suncorp Super Netball). I feel like it's a bittersweet ending," she said about leaving the league after spending most of her NSL career with Mavericks.

For now, Cardwell is focused on her current role for England and hopes that her place will be secured. "I'm really hoping my time will come," she stated.

just saw this news about Eleanor Cardwell returning to netball after that knee injury πŸ€•... i mean, 7 months is crazy quick recovery time! πŸ’ͺ and honestly, i feel like the layout of her comeback story needs some work πŸ“. it's all over the place, jumping from one piece of info to another without any clear transitions or headings. a simple timeline would've been super helpful πŸ•°οΈ. also, why are there so many quotes from Cardwell? some of them feel like they're just listing off her thoughts instead of really telling us what she's trying to say πŸ€”. and what's up with the formatting on that last paragraph? it looks like a mess πŸ“.

πŸ€” So yeah, Eleanor Cardwell's back on the court after a crazy scare with her knee... I mean, 7 months is a long recovery but I guess it shows how determined she is to keep playing. It's like, you gotta respect that about athletes, right? They put their bodies through so much and still want to push forward. πŸ†

But at the same time, it's also super scary to think about the toll this kind of injury can take on your body... I mean, she had to have surgery twice already! πŸ’‰ It's like, what if she does get hurt again? πŸ€• Still, I guess you can't let fear hold you back from chasing your dreams, especially when it comes to something you love as much as netball.

I'm curious to see how this all plays out now that she's back in the England squad... Will she be able to stay injury-free? πŸ˜… Only time will tell! πŸ•°οΈ

🀞 Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it πŸ™Œ. You can't start the next chapter of your life if you keep re-living the last one πŸ“š. Eleanor Cardwell's story is an inspiration to anyone who has faced setbacks in their sports career ⚽️.

omg Eleanor Cardwell is like the ultimate comeback kid 🀣! I mean who needs a knee when you're determined to smash it back into shape? πŸ˜‚ 7 months from being told she'd never play again and now she's back in England's squad? that's like me promising myself I'll eat more veggies if I finish this Netflix show... and then binge-watching the whole thing in one night 🍿πŸ€ͺ. Seriously though, netball is all about perseverance (and a strong knee surgeon πŸ‘¨β€βš•οΈ)

Wow 🀯 Eleanor Cardwell's comeback story is so inspiring! She's like a phoenix rising from the ashes after facing two career-threatening injuries 😩. I'm rooting for her all the way, hope she can stay injury-free and continue to shine on the court πŸ’ͺ!

omg i cant even believe eleanor cardwell came back from being told she'd never play again!!! 🀯 like what even is the point of surgery if it just fixes temporary pain? anyway i think its awesome that shes chasing her passion and not letting a little injury get in the way. 3 matches against new zealand sounds like so much fun! does anyone know when her return match is tho? also im curious about the suncorp super netball league, can someone explain it to me again? πŸ€”

wow 🀯 31 and back from the brink! i gotta respect eleanor cardwell's spirit πŸ’ͺ she was given a death sentence by docs, but she refused to give up on her passion for netball ❀️ and guess what? she came back swinging ⚑️ not just that, she even got a second chance with england πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ i mean, who wouldn't want to play for their national team, right? 😍 the thing is, netball's not just about the sport, it's also about the family you find in it πŸ‘ͺ and cardwell found her tribe with the manchester thunder crew πŸ‘« but now she's ready to shine again πŸ’ƒ can't wait to see what she accomplishes! πŸŽ‰

"I believe the biggest risk is not taking any risk..." πŸ€”
Getting back into the game after a life-altering injury takes courage, but it's clear Eleanor Cardwell has what it takes to make her passion work again.
The mental health aspect of sports can be tough, especially when facing setbacks and uncertainty... loneliness & determination can be a deadly combo πŸ’ͺ

omg, i cant believe cardwells back in the game! 🀯 after being told shes done for good 7 months ago. i mean, who expects a cartilage injury 2x in one year? πŸ€• its either her knee is super fragile or she was pushing it too hard lol. anywayz, i hope she can pull off her comeback without any major setbacks πŸ‘€ cant wait to see her play again tho, shes def an icon in the sport! πŸ’ͺ

πŸ™Œ OMG I'm beyond stoked for Eleanor Cardwell!!! 31 and back in the game after being told she'd never play again? 🀯 that's what I call determination! She's been through so much already, but still manages to bounce back πŸ’ͺ it's truly inspiring. The fact that she's focusing on her role with England now is super smart - let's see her kill it in those upcoming matches against New Zealand πŸ”₯πŸ’₯

πŸ€” I mean... another athlete getting back on the field after a serious injury? Sounds like a recipe for disaster if you ask me 😬. Cardwell's had two major setbacks already and now she's trying to make a comeback? What's next, her team going to start playing with duct tape and hopes? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ I'm all for competition and sportsmanship, but let's be real, the risk of further injury is way too high. And what about her mental health? She was talking about feeling lonely while rehabbing in Australia... that sounds like a recipe for burnout. 🚨 I wish her the best, but I'll believe it when she's not on the field with a cast on πŸ˜’

I'm so hyped for Eleanor Cardwell! 🀩 She's an absolute inspiration after coming back from a career-threatening knee injury just 7 months ago! πŸ’ͺ I mean, can you even imagine giving up on your passion like that? The thought of her feeling lonely while rehabbing in Australia is heartbreaking πŸ˜”. But she's always been super determined and now she's back in England's squad, ready to take on New Zealand πŸ‡³πŸ‡Ώ. Her comeback story is definitely one for the ages! πŸ‘ I'm loving how focused she is on securing her place in the team right now... fingers crossed for her! 🀞

OMG 🀯 I'm literally thrilled 4 @EleanorCardwell's comeback πŸ™Œ after being told she might never play netball again 😱! She's been through so much & it's amazing she's decided to chase her dreams again πŸ’ͺ. Her determination is truly inspiring πŸ’•, especially when you consider all the setbacks she's faced - cartilage injuries & all that rehab stuff πŸ€•. Now that she's back in England's squad, fingers crossed she gets a solid spot πŸ˜… & makes it work out in the Suncorp Super Netball too πŸŽ‰!

πŸ€” I'm so stoked to see Eleanor Cardwell back on the court! That woman's determination & passion 4 netball r truly inspiring 🌟 She went through so much, but she never gave up on her dreams πŸ’ͺ And can't wait 2 c her play 4 England in that upcoming series against NZ πŸΉπŸ’•

😊 This comeback story of Eleanor Cardwell is truly inspiring! I mean, 7 months after being told she might never play again, she's back in the game? That's some serious determination and grit right there πŸ†. The fact that she was feeling like giving up, but then realized she wasn't finished yet... it's like her body and mind were speaking to each other, saying "hold on, we've got this" πŸ’ͺ.

It's also interesting how the recent setback in Australia made her realize that she needed to get back into netball. I guess you could say she was feeling a little lost and disconnected from the sport 🌴. But now, she's all about being part of England's squad again, and that's awesome to see πŸ‘. Fingers crossed for her, though! We'll be watching with bated breath to see how she does in this upcoming series against New Zealand πŸ’₯.

πŸ˜’ I don't get why people still play sports like this. One minute you're good, the next you're out for years. Eleanor Cardwell's comeback is nice, but what about the long-term damage? She's had two serious knee injuries in a short span - that's not normal. πŸ€• Her career might be over, but her body's definitely not done with it... yet. πŸ’Έ I wish she'd think twice before rushing back into this high-impact sport. Maybe she should consider alternative roles within the team? πŸ˜’
