Fin Smith: Calf injury puts Six Nations start at risk

Fin Smith, the young and talented fly-half of Northampton Saints, has been dealt a significant blow as his calf injury puts him in doubt for England's Six Nations opener against Wales on 7 February. The 23-year-old withdrew from the matchday squad to face Bordeaux-Begles on Sunday and is now awaiting the results of a scan.

According to Phil Dowson, Northampton director of rugby, Smith could be out for as long as two weeks, although he has warned that muscle injuries are notoriously unpredictable. This setback comes at a critical time, with England set to take on Wales in three and a half weeks, followed by matches against Scotland and Ireland.

Smith had been enjoying an impressive form for both Saints and England, winning selection for the British and Irish Lions tour of Australia over the summer. However, he has struggled to displace Finn Russell for a Test spot, and his recent performances have been underwhelming.

This latest injury blow will be a significant concern for Steve Borthwick's team, who had high hopes for Smith's development. Ford, on the other hand, had impressed in England's Tests against Argentina and the United States, starting at 10 in victories over Australia, New Zealand, and Argentina.

For Smith, this setback will be particularly difficult to swallow, given his disappointment at being left out of the Lions tour party last summer. He expressed his frustration about not getting a chance to play for England, but his efforts have not gone unnoticed. Despite this injury, he has quickly adapted to life with Saints and has filled in for Smith against Bordeaux-Begles.

As the Six Nations approaches, Smith will be anxiously waiting for the scan results and hoping that his calf injury is not as serious as initially feared.

ugh 😩... poor Finny πŸ€•... two weeks is a long time, but I'm sure he'll be back to his fly-half form in no time πŸ’ͺ🏽! on the bright side, it's giving Ford more game time and he's been doing great 🌟πŸ’₯. and let's not forget, this is just another bump in the road for Finny... he's already made a comeback from being left out of the Lions tour party πŸ™Œ, so I'm sure he'll bounce back from this too πŸ’ͺ🏽!

I hope Fin's not out for too long πŸ˜”... He was really coming into form for England and it'd be a shame to lose him now. The squad depth seems a bit thin with Finn Russell taking up a lot of the fly-half spots πŸ€•. Ford's been doing alright, but I think they need Smith back in the mix to really cause some problems for Wales πŸ’ͺ. It's gonna be tough for Borthwick and the team, especially with their upcoming games against Scotland and Ireland πŸ“†. Fingers crossed Fin gets cleared up quickly and is back on the pitch soon πŸ‘

Ugh, another injury blow πŸ€•... I'm not buying it. How reliable are these muscle injury diagnoses? Two weeks? That's a pretty wide margin of error πŸ˜’. Can't we get more concrete info from the scan results? And what's with Smith's form being underwhelming lately? Is he getting enough game time at Saints to keep him sharp for England? πŸ€” Also, how does this impact the team dynamic? Are they gonna stick with Ford or try to salvage some sort of solution with an injured Smith?

man... smith's season just took a huge hit πŸ’”πŸ˜¬ this guy was lookin all good, and then out of nowhere calf injury πŸ€• so critical timing too, england's gonna miss him for wales and scotland matches ⚽️ really hope it's not 2 weeks tho, can't afford that kinda downtime πŸ˜“ still got faith in smith though, he's shown some sick skills on the pitch πŸ”₯ now's the time to step up, ford's got this πŸ’ͺ

Ugh, just great πŸ˜’ - this is exactly what we need at this time of year. Smith's injury is a huge blow to England and Saints' squad, especially with the Six Nations just around the corner πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. I mean, Ford has been stepping up his game, so it's not like they're completely caught out... but still, this is a tough pill to swallow ⚽️. Can't believe Smith got unlucky again - one week and he'll be back in the mix, fingers crossed 🀞!

Wow πŸ˜‚πŸ€• Ford's performances are giving me hope for England's backline! Interesting how hard it is for Smith to break into the team despite his talent... maybe he just needs to get back in there and show them what he can do 🀞

Ugh, Fin Smith πŸ€•πŸ‰ I mean, this guy's been looking so promising but now he's out with a calf injury 😞. It's just so frustrating because you can tell he's got the skills and everything. But two weeks is a long time, especially with the Six Nations coming up πŸ“†. I really think Ford is going to get his chance to shine now 🀩. I know Fin had some great games for Saints last season but for England it just seems like they're always playing it safe with Finn Russell πŸ€”. Smith's got so much potential, I hope he can come back from this and show what he's really capable of πŸ’ͺ.

πŸ˜žπŸ‰ I'm so bummed out for Fin Smith πŸ€•... two weeks is a long time to be out of the game, especially with England's Six Nations schedule getting crazier by the day πŸ“…πŸ’¨. He was looking like he was finally hitting his stride after that amazing summer with the Lions πŸ’«. Poor guy's been through so much already, getting dropped from the tour party last year and now this injury... πŸ€•. Can't wait to see him back on the pitch though, hopefully not too long! πŸ‘

ugh man i feel bad 4 Fin Smith πŸ€• he's been on fire 4 saints & england but this calf injury could put him out for a couple of weeks πŸ•°οΈ that's like, right in the middle of the six nations ⚽️ can't imagine how frustrating it must be 4 him, especially after being left out of the lions tour πŸ˜” hopefully the scan results come back good & he's back on the pitch soon πŸ’ͺ

Omg what's next? First, Finny gets injured and now he's out of England's squad... it's like a rugby curse πŸ˜‚! Seriously though, this is a major blow to Northampton Saints and England. I mean, Smith was on fire, winning selection for the British & Irish Lions tour... talk about a setback! πŸ’” Now, Ford's gotta step up and fill in for him, which isn't an easy task either 🀯. Hopefully it's just a minor tweak and not two weeks out... fingers crossed for Finny! πŸ‘

awww noooo fin smith πŸ€•πŸ˜Ÿ... i feel bad 4 him, he's been lookin at this position 4 ages now & seems like he's finally gettin there... an injury at dis time is just whack πŸ’”... does anyone think they'll be able 2 bring in some backup? πŸ€” i mean, they can't afford 2 have smith out 4 that long... it's gonna b a huge test 4 the team w/o him πŸ‘₯

Ugh, this is like dΓ©jΓ  vu all over again πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ... we've seen so many talented young players like Fin get knocked out of contention at the worst possible time. I mean, Smith was on fire for Saints and England, then suddenly he's out with a calf injury that could keep him out for two weeks. What are the chances, right? πŸ€” It's tough to see Ford getting all the attention now, but at least he's been doing well in Tests. Still, it's not ideal timing for Smith, considering his disappointment from last summer. Fingers crossed the scan comes back good and he can get back on the pitch soon ⛹️

awww man πŸ€• hope Fin's calf recovers fast cuz wales game is gonna be huge!!! πŸ‰ england needs him like now πŸ’ͺ fin russell has been doing a great job but smith was bringin the heat too πŸ”₯ πŸ€” it's def hard for him to swallow this injury after being left out of lions tour πŸ™„ but he's still got some good performances under his belt and saints is doin well! 🐺 fingers crossed for fin 🀞

Ugh, this is so fishy 🐟... I mean, why now? He's been doing fine, no major issues before. And then suddenly, it's a "significant blow" πŸ€”... sounds like some kinda setup to me. All these injuries popping up at the worst times, just when England needs him most... you can't help but wonder if someone's trying to sabotage our chances of winning πŸ†

πŸ€•πŸ’” This sucks for Fin Smith... been looking forward to him bringing his game to England. Hopefully it's just a minor setback & he's back in the squad in no time πŸ‰πŸ‘

I'm really worried about Fin Smith's injury πŸ€•πŸ˜¬ it looks like he's going to miss the England v Wales game which is a big deal for him, especially after being left out of the Lions tour last year πŸ˜”. Northampton will definitely miss his skills on the field too πŸ’ͺ. I hope he can come back soon and start playing again, it would be great to see him shine in the Six Nations ⚑️. The team's prospects just got a bit tougher with this injury 🀯
