Finland’s Prime Minister Sanna Marin concedes election | CNN

Finland's Prime Minister Sanna Marin conceded defeat in the country's parliamentary election on Sunday, marking the end of her tenure as the world's youngest prime minister. Marin, 37, led her Social Democrats party to 43 seats in parliament, narrowly behind the National Coalition Party (NCP) with 48 seats and the Finns Party with 46 seats.

Marin had been a progressive figure, popular among young Finns, but faced criticism at home for her government's spending habits and perceived extravagance. The NCP, led by Petteri Orpo, vowed to "fix Finland" and curb public debt, which has risen significantly since Marin took office in 2019.

Orpo will now lead the opposition, forming a coalition with other parties to obtain a majority in parliament. Marin has pledged that her Social Democrats may govern with the NCP but will not work with the Finns Party, which she accused of being "openly racist".

Finland's parliamentary election was seen as a test of the country's resilience amid Europe's energy crisis and rising public debt. The NCP's promise to reduce immigration from developing countries outside the EU also resonated with some voters.

Marin has been a prominent figure on the global stage, including her push for NATO membership in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The process is now almost complete, with Helsinki expected to join within days after all 30 Western defense alliance members approved the accession.

The election result marks a significant shift in Finnish politics, as Marin's progressive government faces challenges from a more conservative opposition.

😩 oh man... i'm so bummed for sanna marin 🤕 she was such an inspiring leader and her legacy is being taken away by the haters 💔 especially with that ridiculous immigration comment from the finns party 🙄 like who does that? 🚫 anyway, i think it's time for finland to take a closer look at their economy and make some real changes 💸 not just pretend to be fiscally responsible like petteri orpo always saying but never doing 🤑 but still gotta admire sanna's determination in pushing for nato membership 🤝 that was one bold move 👏 anyway, it's gonna be an interesting few years in finland politics 🤔

omg what just happened 🤯 Sanna Marin was like the ultimate underdog and now she's out of office 😔 i feel bad for her, she did some cool stuff for Finland like trying to join NATO 🚀 but it looks like the finns got a little scared and went with the more conservative option 🙅‍♂️ the NCP party is all about cutting public debt and reducing immigration which might be good for them in the short term but what about all the young folks who loved Marin's progressive vibe? 👀 now we'll have to wait and see how Orpo does as PM, hope he's not too bad 😅

Just read about Sanna Marin losing her spot as PM 🤔. I mean, she was only 37 and had some major accomplishments under her belt, like pushing for NATO membership 🚀. But I guess the public didn't agree with her spending habits and some of the other stuff she did. The NCP's promises about fixing Finland's debt and reducing immigration did seem to resonate with some voters 👥.

But what really caught my attention was Sanna Marin refusing to work with the Finns Party, calling them "openly racist" 🚫. That's a pretty bold move, especially considering how politics can get messy. I hope they can form a stable coalition and actually make a difference in Finland 💡.

man... can't believe it's already time for a new PM in Finland 🤯 sanna marin was like, so young and full of energy when she took office back in 2019, and now she's out 😔 i remember her being all about climate change and progressive stuff, but people got tired of the party spending habits 💸

i'm kinda surprised at the NCP winning, they promised to cut public debt and curb immigration, which seemed like a big deal to some voters 🤝 it's gonna be interesting to see how marin's social democrats try to form coalitions with the ncp, though... she didn't want to work with the finns party, saying they were racist 😕

anyway, it's all good, Finland's still a great country 💚 and i'm sure they'll figure out their politics 💪 marin's legacy is gonna be interesting to watch from afar 👀

😊 So it looks like Sanna Marin's time as PM is coming to an end... not too surprising, given how polarised the election was. I think it's interesting that her party still managed 43 seats, considering they've been accused of overspending in the past 🤑. The NCP's win is no surprise either - Finland's energy crisis and rising debt have likely made people a bit more cautious about spending 📉.

I'm curious to see how Orpo will tackle public debt, though - it's not just a matter of cutting costs, but also ensuring that Finland can maintain its social services and infrastructure. And on the issue of immigration, I think Marin was right to be wary of the Finns Party's stance... 🤝

It'll be interesting to see how this affects Finland's global standing, especially with NATO membership almost complete 💪. Overall, it looks like a significant shift in Finnish politics, and I'm looking forward to seeing how things play out 📊

Yaaas, the youth are speaking 🙌! Sanna Marin's time is up and it's about time for some fresh blood 💥. I gotta say, I'm low-key disappointed that she didn't win with her squad 🤝, but you can't argue with the Finns wanting change 🔄. Petteri Orpo's NCP has a solid plan to "fix Finland" and I'm all about it 💪. Who wouldn't want to tackle that public debt and energy crisis? ⚡️ It'll be interesting to see how Marin's party will play ball with the NCP, but no love for the Finns Party, girl 👀. Marin's been a global superstar for years 🌟, but it's time for someone else to shine through 💫. Bring on the new era of Finnish politics 🎉!

the fact that sanna marin is no longer leading finland just shows how much you need stability and continuity in your country 🤔. her party was popular among young people, but the economy wasn't exactly thriving under her leadership... it's kinda weird that she thought being "progressive" would automatically win over voters... i mean, there's a reason why we call it "trickle down economics"... anyway, it'll be interesting to see how petteri orpo handles the opposition and the public debt... Finland needs someone who can bring people together and make tough decisions 📈

🤔 so marins loss isnt that surprising tbh her govt has been criticized for overspending and being kinda extra lol 🤑👀 she was also pretty open about her views on immigration which might not have resonated with some voters... i think the ncp's promise to curb public debt and reduce immigration did hit a nerve though 👍

anyway, this changes things for finland's politics and it'll be interesting to see how marin and her party move forward 🤷‍♀️ they said they might govern with the ncp but that sounds kinda unlikely considering marins beef with the finns party 😒

🤔 "The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams." 🌟

I think this election is a sign that Finns are tired of the same old thing and want change. Sanna Marin was a breath of fresh air, but it looks like they're looking for something more conservative now. The NCP's promise to curb public debt and reduce immigration might be just what some people are looking for. But it'll be interesting to see how they balance that with the need to address Finland's energy crisis.

I'm also a bit sad that Sanna Marin won't be leading the government anymore, she was a powerful woman who pushed for some amazing things. 🙏

But overall, I think this election is an important step for Finland and it'll be interesting to see how they navigate the next few years. 💪

just got out of a gaming session and i'm all about that nato life 🎮💥 finland joining is like, super late but better late than never lol. marin was on fire with her progressive vibes but it seems like the people wanted some stability after her wild ride as pm. orpo's gonna try to fix finland's finances and all that jazz, we'll see how that goes down 🤔

omg what a shock 🤯 sanna marin has been leading finland for so long and was expecting to win this election? she's still super young and experienced for her age tho 😊 can't wait to see how petteri orpo leads the ncp now 👀 hopes they'll actually deliver on their promises about fixing finland's debt 💸 anyway, gotta love that marin stood up for herself against the finns party 🙏 and let's not forget she was all about nato membership 💪🌎
