Finland’s Prime Minister Sanna Marin concedes election | CNN

Finland's Prime Minister Sanna Marin has conceded defeat in the country's parliamentary election, marking an end to her era as premier. The opposition right-wing National Coalition Party (NCP) claimed victory, winning 48 of the 200 seats in parliament, narrowly ahead of the nationalist Finns Party with 46 seats and Marin's Social Democrats on 43 seats.

The NCP leader, Petteri Orpo, declared that his party had secured the "biggest mandate" and vowed to "fix Finland" and its economy. He will now have the first chance at forming a coalition to obtain a majority in parliament. Marin's government was seen as under pressure due to her handling of public spending and criticism over her partying.

The NCP has promised to curb spending and reduce public debt, which has reached just over 70% of GDP since Marin took office in 2019. Orpo accused Marin of eroding Finland's economic resilience at a time when Europe's energy crisis, driven by Russia's war in Ukraine, has hit the country hard.

The Finns Party, led by Riikka Purra, has also called for austerity measures and reduced immigration from developing countries outside the European Union. The party's main goal is to protect Finland's sovereignty and reduce the impact of globalization.

Marin, 37, was the world's youngest prime minister when she took office in 2019. She had been a fan favorite among young progressives but faced criticism at home for her government's spending and personal life.

🤔 Just wondering if Orpo is really ready to 'fix' Finland... his party's plans on public debt & austerity seem kinda extreme, especially with the energy crisis affecting Europe 🌡️. Also, what about the young folks like Marin? Don't they deserve a chance to lead too? 🙄 The NCP's mandate might be big, but can they deliver? We'll have to wait and see how this coalition works out 🤝

I'm kinda sad that Sanna Marin's time as PM is over 🤕. I mean, she was only 37 when she became the youngest PM in the world – that's crazy! She had a lot of potential to make a difference in Finland's politics.

But at the same time, I gotta say I don't blame her for conceding defeat 😊. Her party did face some tough criticism over public spending and personal life stuff... and let's be real, being PM is tough enough without having to deal with all that drama 💁‍♀️.

I'm curious to see how Petteri Orpo and the NCP are gonna fix Finland's economy 🤔. They're promising austerity measures and reducing public debt – sounds like a big job for them! I hope they can make it work, 'cause Finland really needs some economic stability right now 💸.

And what about Sanna Marin? She's still young and talented – maybe this is an opportunity for her to come back stronger and lead from the shadows 👀. We'll just have to wait and see how things play out 😃.

just watched the results come in 🤯 can't believe marin didn't win lol 48 seats is huge! the ncp party seems like it wants to fix finland's economy, hope they do 😬 orpo's speech sounded pretty convincing but we'll have to wait and see how things play out 👀

also heard that marin's partying life was a major factor in her loss 🤷‍♀️ people love their prime ministers to be down-to-earth and relatable, not so much if they're partying all the time lol 🎉 what do you think about finland's economy, should the ncp try to cut spending? 📊 https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-60341638

so finland just changed governments 🤔... i'm kinda surprised that the ncp won without any major scandals around them, whereas sanna marin's social democrats got hit hard by public spending and partying issues 😐. still, marin was a young and progressive leader who tried to tackle some tough issues like energy crisis and immigration, so i think her legacy is still worth being remembered 🙏.

i'm curious to see how petteri orpo will balance the books and fix finland's economy 💸... it's gonna be interesting to watch him navigate through parliament with those nationalist fins party folks 👀. anyway, hope marin gets some well-deserved rest after this long journey ✨

🤔 So Marin's loss is kind of expected, especially with the economy being a major issue in Finland right now 📉. I mean, she was under pressure to cut public spending and reduce debt, which is no easy feat 🤑. The NCP's promise to curb spending sounds like a good start, but we'll see how they actually manage it 🤞.

It's also interesting that the Finns Party is calling for reduced immigration - I think this could be a major factor in shaping Finland's identity and direction going forward 🌎. As a young PM, Marin was seen as a breath of fresh air by many, but her partying scandal did dent that image 😳.

I'm curious to see how Petteri Orpo forms his coalition and what kind of changes he'll bring to the table 🔩. It's clear that Finland needs some restructuring, especially with Europe's energy crisis hitting hard 💨. Time will tell if the NCP can deliver on their promises 🕰️.

🤔 so marins concession is not really surprising, finland's economy has been in a mess since the start of the russia ukraine war 🌪️ and she was under a lot of pressure on that front 🙏 48 seats for ncp is actually kinda impressive, but i wonder if they'll be able to form a stable gov't 🤦‍♀️ orcs gonna try their luck with petteri orpo tho 😂

I gotta say, Sanna Marin's gonna have to take responsibility for this one 😬. I mean, she knew there was trouble brewing with the economy and public spending, but did she do enough to address it? 🤔 Not enough, in my opinion. She was so focused on being a fan favorite among young progressives that she probably lost sight of what's really important for Finland's future.

Now that Petteri Orpo is at the helm, we'll see if he can actually deliver on his promises 😎. I hope he doesn't make things worse with the austerity measures and reduced immigration stuff... that just sounds like more of the same old tired politics 🙄. But hey, at least it's time for a change, right? 🔄

Finland just went through this major shakeup 🤯! The NCP winning is crazy, considering how popular Sanna Marin was just a few years ago 😂. I mean, she was literally the youngest PM in the world back in 2019... what happened? 🤔 Apparently, her party's handling of spending and debt got out of control 💸. And don't even get me started on those partying pics that went viral 📸... yeah, that didn't help 😅.

So, now it's Petteri Orpo's turn to try and "fix" Finland ⚠️. He's all about curbing spending, reducing debt, and protecting Finnish sovereignty 🙌. The Finns Party is pretty similar, but with a stronger focus on reducing immigration 👥. I'm curious to see how they'll navigate the energy crisis and globalization 🌎. One thing's for sure, Finland just got a new chapter in its politics 📚... let's see what they do next! 🔜

🤔 so its not surprising that Marin lost tbh... ppl were like "petty petti" about her partying all the time 🍻💃, and she struggled to control public spending lol what a tricky job 👑 anyway hope Orpo can do better w/ economy and stuff 📈💸

OMG I'm kinda surprised about Sanna Marin's concession 🤯! She's always been so confident and determined, but I guess the Finns just wanted change? 😂 Either way, Petteri Orpo is gonna have his hands full trying to balance the books and fix the economy 🤑. And can we talk about how young she was when she became PM? Like, 37 is NOT old, and I'm sure it's not easy dealing with all that pressure 💁‍♀️! Anyway, fingers crossed for Finland, and I hope Orpo delivers on his promises 🤞

Finland just threw out Sanna Marin, it's wild how quickly things can change 😅. The NCP's Petteri Orpo seems like a pretty standard right-wing dude who wants to 'fix' the country... sounds familiar 🤦‍♂️. I'm not really sure what to expect from him, but hopefully he'll be more than just a typical politician 🤞. The Finns Party is also pretty aggressive on immigration, that's some interesting stuff 🚫. Can't help but wonder how the economy will fare under Orpo's leadership 🤑.
