First-and-10: NFL lifer Vic Fangio, up-and-comer Ben Johnson are two rare Bears success stories

Ben Johnson's Rejuvenating Season: A Study in Contrasts and Consistency

The Chicago Bears' 2025 season is a testament to the power of a well-designed system and effective leadership. At the helm, two coaches stand out as rare success stories: Vic Fangio and Ben Johnson. Both men have carved out niches for themselves within Halas Hall, with Fangio's defensive prowess and Johnson's offense-driven ascension serving as a reminder that individual greatness can be achieved in different ways.

Fangio, hired by John Fox in 2015, arrived at the Bears with an impressive résumé, having transformed the team's defense from a lackluster unit to a dominant force. Under Fangio's guidance, the Bears' defense has consistently ranked among the best in the league, boasting a stingy unit that allowed a league-low number of points and yards per play. While Matt Nagy's tenure was marked by flashes of brilliance, it was Fangio who laid the foundation for the team's 2025 success.

Meanwhile, Johnson, born into coaching with Vic Fangio in the 1980s, has quickly established himself as a force to be reckoned with. Hired by George McCaskey, Johnson's contract is a reflection of his growing influence within the organization. With a reported $13 million annual salary, he's one of the highest-paid coordinators in the league. His arrival sparked a chain reaction of changes, as Ryan Poles became more aggressive in building out the offense line.

Johnson's impact on the team has been remarkable, with the Bears' offense improving dramatically from 28th to eighth in points scored and from 32nd to sixth in yards per play. The unit's resurgence is undeniable, but it's Johnson's ability to adapt and evolve that sets him apart. His hiring also marked a significant shift in the team's approach, as Poles became more willing to take risks and challenge the status quo.

In Week 2 against the Eagles, this matchup will prove pivotal for both coaches. The Bears' offense, which has struggled with consistency under previous coordinators, must navigate Johnson's challenging unit. Conversely, Fangio's Eagles defense, ranked eighth in points allowed, faces a stiff test in Johnson's potent offense. With the stakes high and the result far from certain, this game will serve as a defining moment for both coaches.

Johnson's Offense: A Formula for Success?

One particular benefit of hiring Johnson was his ability to win shootouts. The Bears were 0-25 in games where their opponents allowed 23 or more points during Fangio's tenure, but with Johnson at the helm, that record has been dramatically rewritten. In Week 1 against the Steelers, the Bears prevailed 31-28, and they've since gone 4-1 when allowing 23 or more points.

However, this formula for success is not without its pitfalls. The Bears' offense has struggled to put away leads in crucial situations, with a notable example coming in Week 2 against the Eagles. With a 31-28 lead entering the final 6:20, the team's offense went three-and-out twice before finally securing the victory.

The key to Johnson's success lies not just in his ability to win shootouts but also in his capacity to rally the team from behind. In this instance, however, it was the Steelers' inability to capitalize on opportunities that proved decisive.

Despite these challenges, Johnson's production through his accuracy issues makes him a fair comparison to Josh Allen, a quarterback who struggled with accuracy in his first two seasons before blossoming into a perennial MVP candidate. Williams has started 28 games – the same amount as Allen in 2018-19 – and could be poised to take that next step.

The Bears' Culture: A Matter of Perspective

There's been much debate about the Bears' culture, with some arguing that winning is the ultimate indicator of team cohesion. While it's true that a winning team tends to have good culture, it's equally important to recognize that culture is shaped by many factors beyond individual greatness.

In Johnson's case, his ability to adapt and evolve has been crucial in establishing himself as a key figure within Halas Hall. His hiring marked a significant shift in the team's approach, with Poles becoming more willing to challenge the status quo.

Conclusion:

The Chicago Bears' 2025 season serves as a reminder that individual greatness can be achieved in different ways. Vic Fangio and Ben Johnson have carved out niches for themselves within Halas Hall, each contributing to the team's success in unique and valuable ways. As the Bears face the Eagles in Week 2, this matchup will prove pivotal for both coaches, with the stakes high and the result far from certain.

idk how much stock i put into ben johnson being compared to josh allen... yeah sure he's a great coach but accuracy issues are still there 🤔 is that really something you can "evolve" out of or is it just a matter of him getting his QBs in line? also, what's up with all the stats on fangio's defense? those numbers look kinda sketchy to me... where did they come from again? 📊 need some more info here 👀

🤔 I'm just not buying the whole "coach for hire" thing with Ben Johnson 🤑. Don't get me wrong, he's definitely brought some much-needed life to the offense, but is it really that easy? I mean, 4-1 against teams allowing 23+ points? Sounds like a fluke to me 🤷‍♂️. And what about all the times the team has blown leads? That's not exactly a recipe for sustained success 😒. Not saying Fangio isn't a great coach, but let's not forget he's been around for ages and built some serious momentum 🔥. Give it another year or two before we start labeling Johnson as some kind of genius 🤓.

I'm so hyped about the Bears right now 🤩! Ben Johnson is killing it on offense 💥 and Vic Fangio's defense is looking 🔒 strong! Their partnership is like a perfectly balanced recipe 🍴 - can't wait to see how they continue to evolve together in Week 2 📆

I love how Ben Johnson has turned the Bears' offense around - it's like night and day compared to last season 🤯. The thing that impresses me most about him is his ability to make adjustments on the fly and still get the job done. It's not just about throwing touchdowns, it's about making smart decisions under pressure, which sets him apart from other coordinators in the league 💡.

And you're right, his hire did spark a big shift in the team's approach, with Ryan Poles becoming more aggressive in building out the offense line 🔄. It's amazing to see how one move can have such a ripple effect on the entire organization. I'm curious to see how this all plays out and what other changes we'll see as the season progresses 🔮.

Fangio's defense, of course, is still the real deal 💪. The guy has a way of getting the best out of his players and turning them into game-changers. He's a master tactician who always seems to have an answer for whatever the opposing offense throws at him 🤔.

I do think it's worth noting that while Johnson's hire was a big one, it's not like he came in and completely changed the team overnight 🔥. The foundation laid by Fangio and Nagy was still there, and Johnson built upon it to create something new and exciting. That's what makes this season so interesting - we get to see two different sides of the Bears' identity playing out on the field 🎟️.

And hey, who knows? Maybe this is the year the Bears make a deep run in the playoffs 🔥🔴. Stranger things have happened, right? 😉

I think Ben Johnson's hiring was a game changer for the Bears 🤯. He brought a fresh perspective to the team and his ability to adapt has been key to their success so far. The way he's been able to win shootouts is crazy, but at the same time, I'm worried about how he'll perform in close games ⏰. Still, I think he's one of the best coordinators in the league right now and his influence on the team can't be overstated 💪

🤯 I'm loving how Ben Johnson is taking over the offense! He's like a puzzle solver, figuring out what works best for his team on the fly 🧩. And can we talk about Vic Fangio's defensive magic? The guy's been steady as a rock 🏰. But seriously, it'll be interesting to see how they match up against each other in Week 2 👀.

omg u guys i just can't even rn!!! ben johnson is literally the real deal like how did he go from being a relatively unknown coach to one of the highest-paid coordinators in the league? $13 million a year?!?! 🤑🔥 and i love how he's able to adapt and evolve with the team, it's so inspiring. but at the same time i'm also kinda salty that the bears were 0-25 in shootouts under vic fangio lol what a difference a new coach makes! 💪

I'm not sure if Ben Johnson's offense is a formula for success or just a bunch of lucky wins... 🤔 They're 4-1 when allowing 23+ points, which sounds like they're getting caught in shootouts by other teams' offenses. Maybe it's not his system that's working so well, but more like the opposing team's offense is just way worse than his 🤑

I think its crazy how much of a difference Ben Johnson has made on offense, I mean he came in here and basically turned the whole unit around 🤯🏈. And you're right, his ability to adapt and evolve is key, he's not just riding the coattails of other coaches like some others might be 😂. Fangio's defense is still elite, but Johnson's offense has been a game-changer for this team. I love how the Bears are being more aggressive now under Poles too 🤑.

🤔 I'm still not convinced that Johnson's offense is just about adapting and evolving... seems like they're relying too much on their QB to bail them out when things aren't going right 🤷‍♂️ Plus, have we seen enough consistency from this team? One week up, one week down - can they really sustain this level of performance throughout the season? 💸

I wonder if we'll ever see a team win all their home games at Soldier Field 🏟️. It's been too long since the Bears have had a decent crowd, and it would be awesome to see some excited fans cheering them on. Maybe the current team is the one that'll finally make that happen? 🤔

🤔 I mean, can you believe how fast Ben Johnson's offense has transformed? It's crazy how quickly he's been able to win shootouts and lead the team to those big wins! 💥 But at the same time, it's a bit concerning that they've had trouble closing out games when ahead. 🙏 Still, I think Fangio's defense is going to be a solid test for Johnson's offense in this matchup against the Eagles... will be interesting to see how it all plays out! 😬

I think what's really interesting about Ben Johnson is how he's able to balance his aggressive approach to offense with a more measured tone under Fangio 🤔. I mean, on one hand you've got this guy who's basically saying "let's go all out and try to score every point we can" - which, let's be real, is not always the most sustainable approach in the long term 😅. But at the same time, his ability to win shootouts and rally the team from behind is a huge asset for the Bears.

It also makes me think about how Johnson's approach is similar to Josh Allen's early days with the Bills - I mean, both guys were known for struggling with accuracy at first, but then suddenly they just took off 💥. Is it possible that Williams is going through a similar thing? I think so. The key difference, of course, is that Allen had the luxury of playing behind an elite defense to help mask his early struggles 🤦‍♂️.

Anyway, I'm super excited to see how this plays out - the Bears-Eagles game in Week 2 is shaping up to be a real barnburner 🔥!

The thing about Vic Fangio is he's like a fine wine, gets better with age 🍷. The dude was already an established coach before coming to the Bears, but it's clear he brought a level of stability that allowed Ben Johnson to thrive. Now, with Johnson at the helm, I'm not sure if they can replicate that consistency on both sides of the ball. They're still gonna need to work out some kinks if they wanna be considered one of the top teams in the league 🤔

heir hire ben johnson is a genius 🤯 i mean have you seen his offense go from 28th to 8th in points scored? that's insane. its not just about having talent on paper, it's about the system he has put in place and how he's been able to make adjustments as needed. Fangio's defense is still a beast but Johnson's unit is the real game changer.

omg u guys i cant even right now ben johnson is literally the real deal like he took a bunch of scrubs and turned them into a top 8 offense its insane that ryan poles had to get so desperate to sign him lol $13 mil a year is nuts but honestly thats just proof of how good he is his ability to adapt and evolve is so underrated and i love how hes not afraid to take risks and challenge the status quo even when its hard fam vic fangio got game too but ben johnson is on another level
