Five years later, the 'Seven Sixers' recall the day 'everything was weird' and Tyrese Maxey began evolving into the franchise's leader

Five years ago, Philadelphia 76ers rookie guard Tyrese Maxey made his first NBA start against a loaded Denver Nuggets team. Due to a COVID-19 outbreak within the Sixers, it was unclear if they would be able to play their scheduled game that afternoon. With Joel Embiid ruled out for the game and several other key players sidelined, Maxey had to put the team on his back.

"I think you can get 40 tonight," Embiid told Maxey before the game, a prediction that turned out not as crazy as it seemed at the time. In reality, Maxey scored 39 points in his very first NBA start, with 18 of his 33 shot attempts from the field. Despite the unusual visuals – two players on the bench and no fans in the crowd – everyone involved remembers how bizarre the day was.

The "Seven Sixers," as they came to be known, had to put together a seven-man rotation due to the outbreak. The team included Danny Green, Dwight Howard, Isaiah Joe, Dakota Mathias, Paul Reed, Tony Bradley, and Brad Wanamaker, with Maxey being the only ball-handler available for most of the game.

Green, who played alongside Maxey during his first two seasons in Philadelphia, said that it was hard to imagine how bizarre that day would be five years later. "It's crazy," Green laughed. "He just needed the opportunity." Green pointed out that Rivers developed Rajon Rondo into a star floor general with tough coaching and that he wanted to ensure Maxey didn't lose his authentic self amid intense pressure.

Maxey credits not just Rivers but also Embiid, Harris, Harden, current mentor Kyle Lowry, and many others for keeping him grounded. He says the experience was difficult but also helped him respect the game even more. "Every single day, I was learning a lot, man," Maxey said. "I was learning from everybody."

Five years later, Maxey is an NBA superstar, averaging well over 30 points per game and having 14 separate 40-point outbursts to his name, including his playoff masterclass that saved the Sixers' season. His three-point shooting development has changed his trajectory and shot diet, with ridiculous rim finishes and dazzling pull-up triples.

Despite the journey, Maxey's smile persists. It is one of the many ways he's become open about the struggles that came with being a rookie in a tough situation. "I'm just blessed to be here," Maxey said. "It's just a blessing to be here."

OMG, u gotta feel 4 Tyrese Maxey tho 🀯! Five yrs ago, he had 2 put all on his back after Covid forced out most of the team & Embiid πŸ€•. He ended up scoring 39pts in his 1st NBA start πŸ“ˆ & now he's an NBA superstar averaging 30+ pts per game πŸš€. What's crazy is how far he's come from that weird, COVID-ridden game πŸŒͺ️. Rivers & Embiid were like "we got u" πŸ‘Š & it paid off big time πŸ’―. Maxey's still humble & open about the struggles he faced as a rookie πŸ™. He's literally blessed 2 b where he is today 😊.

🀯 I mean, can you believe how far Tyrese Maxey has come since that crazy rookie game against the Nuggets five years ago? πŸ™Œ He was literally expected to carry the team on his back due to all the injuries and then he goes out there and drops 39 points in his first start. That's insane! πŸ’₯

I think it's really inspiring to see how Maxey has handled the pressure and taken it upon himself to become one of the top players in the league. He's got an amazing work ethic and has surrounded himself with some incredible mentors who have helped him grow both on and off the court.

And you know what's even more impressive? The way he's stayed humble and grounded despite all his success. I mean, he's had to deal with a lot of hype and expectations, but he still comes across as so down-to-earth and relatable. That's gotta be a testament to how dedicated he is to the game and how much it means to him.

But what really gets me is that he gave so much credit to his teammates and coaches who helped him along the way. It's not just about him, you know? He's a true leader and role model for young players everywhere. πŸ‘

OMG, I'm soooo proud of Tyrese Maxey!!! 😍 Five years ago he was literally put on the spot and still managed to kill it on his first NBA start 🀯. I mean, can you imagine how hard it must've been for him? But he took that challenge head-on and ran with it! πŸ’ͺ The fact that he got 39 points is insane, but what's even crazier is how far he's come since then πŸš€. He's become a superstar and his smile is still one of the brightest things on the court 😊. I love how humble he is too, giving props to all the coaches and teammates who helped him along the way πŸ’•. He's just so inspiring, you know? πŸ™Œ

Man, can u believe how far Tyrese has come from that crazy game? 🀯 I mean, 39 points as a rookie is insane! And the fact that he had to carry that team with 7 other players on the bench and no fans makes it even more impressive. He's got some amazing skills now, but it's clear he still credits his coaches and teammates for keeping him grounded back then πŸ’―. Love how humble he remains too, always giving props where props are due πŸ™. It just goes to show that when you've got the right support system, anything is possible! πŸ‘

🀩 I mean, can you even imagine having to start for your team like Tyrese Maxey did 5 yrs ago? 😲 Like, no fans in the crowd and only 7 guys on the roster? 🀯 It must've been super tough but he rose to the occasion and became a superstar! πŸ’« What I love about him is how humble he stays despite all his success. He gives props to coach Rivers for keeping him grounded and not losing himself amidst all the pressure. That's what it's all about - being true to yourself while chasing your dreams 🎯πŸ’ͺ

😊 I THINK IT'S AMAZING HOW FAR TYRESE MAXEY HAS COME IN THE LAST FIVE YEARS! HE WAS JUST A ROOKIE WHO HAD TO STEP UP FOR HIS TEAM AND NOW HE'S AN NBA SUPERSTAR ⭐️! IT'S REALLY COOL TO SEE HOW THOSE EARLY EXPERIENCES HELPED HIM DEVELOP INTO THE PLAYER WE KNOW TODAY. I MEAN, 40-POINT GAMES WEREN'T JUST A FLUKE BACK THEN, AND IT SAYS A LOT ABOUT HIS WORK ETHIC AND RESILIENCE. ALSO, IT'S PRETTY COOL TO SEE HOW THOSE EARLY GUYS LIKE RIVERS AND EMBIID HELPED HIM OUT AND KEEP HIM REAL ⚑️

🀩πŸ’₯ Five years ago, I was like "wow" when Tyrese Maxey stepped up for the Sixers πŸ€! COVID-19 outbreak and all, he went from benchwarmer to hero πŸ’ͺ. Joel Embiid's confidence in him paid off πŸ™Œ, scoring 39 points on 18 of 33 shots 🎯. The rest is history now πŸ“ˆ. Maxey credits many for his growth 🀝, but it's clear that Philly's got another superstar πŸ‘‘. His smile remains bright πŸ’›, and so does his game πŸ”₯. Can't wait to see what the future holds πŸ”„!

🀩 I mean, can you believe how far Tyrese Maxey has come since his crazy first NBA start 5 years ago? πŸ™Œ He was literally put on the back of the team due to the COVID outbreak and had to carry them with a loaded Denver Nuggets squad. And let's be real, that game was straight outta a movie 🍿! I'm loving how he credits Rivers for keeping him grounded amidst all that pressure πŸ’ͺ. And have you seen his three-point shooting lately? πŸ”₯ It's insane! The kid's got game for days 😎. He's literally become one of the top players in the league and it's amazing to see him stay humble and grateful πŸ™. I'm rooting for him all the way, he's an inspiration to many young players out there πŸ‘.

🀯 I'm loving Tyrese Maxey's story, dude! He went from a COVID-19-ravaged 76ers team to an actual superstar πŸš€. It's wild to think about how far he's come and how much he's grown. The coaching staff must've done something right with Doc Rivers pushing him to be his best self πŸ’ͺ. And can we talk about his three-point shot? πŸ”₯ From zero to hero in a matter of years, Maxey is the definition of an NBA success story πŸ™Œ.

πŸ€” I mean, think about it... The Sixers had to create this seven-man rotation with like, nobody on the bench... And Maxey is expected to carry the team because of COVID and Embiid being out... It sounds kinda fishy, you know? Like, they wanted to see what their young rookie could do under pressure. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ But at the same time, it's cool that he rose to the challenge. I mean, 39 points in his first start? That's pretty impressive! πŸ™Œ It's also good that he credits some of his teammates for helping him stay grounded... Maybe they were trying to prepare him for something, or help him develop into a superstar? 😏

OMG u can belive its crazy how far Tyrese Maxey has come!!! 🀯 he was literally puttin on his team 5 yrs ago when all the other players got sick 🀒 and he had to step up 2 the plate 🍴, but ppl r forgettin that he didnt do it alone πŸ˜‚, it was his coaches like Doc Rivers who saw somethin in him n gave him a chance 2 shine πŸ’«, n now hes an NBA superstar averaging ovr 30 points per game πŸ€, its so inspiring 2 see how far u can go when u got the right support & mindset πŸ€—

🀯 Maxey's story is wild but also super relatable - being forced into a starting role at 19 and having to carry the team is a nightmare, but it sounds like he was actually really well-prepared for it by his coaches and teammates. I mean, Rivers and Embiid must've been super supportive, and now Maxey's a superstar πŸš€πŸ”₯

lol can u even imagine bein on the court w no fans & only 7 guys? πŸ˜‚ that was wild. i think its great how Tyrese took it in stride tho. all those vets were lookin out for him. coach Rivers did an amazing job gettin him ready for the big leagues. πŸ™Œ maxey's growth is insane, his game has come so far since those crazy 7-man rotations. he's still chillin' w that smile tho, love it 😊

omg can u even imagine being a rookie and having to carry an entire team on ur back? 🀯 tyrese maxey's story is insane! he went from being a 19-yr-old rookie to an nba superstar with 14 40pt outbursts πŸš€πŸ’₯ what's even more inspiring is how humble he remains, crediting his coaches and teammates for helping him stay grounded ❀️. we need more players like this in the league! πŸ‘

OMG 🀩, I cant even believe how far Tyrese Maxey has come since those crazy 76ers days 🀯! Five years ago, he was literally put on the spot and had to carry his team to victory single-handedly 😲. And now look at him - a bonafide NBA superstar πŸ’« averaging over 30 points per game πŸ“Š. The way Joel Embiid saw potential in him back then is so inspiring πŸ™. And I love how Tyrese credits all the coaches and teammates who helped him stay grounded during those tough times 🀝. His humility is truly admirable ❀️. Can't wait to see what he does next! πŸ’₯

πŸ€” so maxey goes from scoring 39 points on his first start in like what, covid? πŸ€’ to now averaging over 30 and being an nba superstar? how did he get there? πŸš€ was it really just rivers coaching him or was it more than that? πŸ’‘ and btw, where's the source on maxey's current stats? didn't see any link to back it up

omg u know what's crazy? i was just at this thrift store last weekend and found an old pair of sneakers from like 2007 lol they were still in great condition too! i felt like a total retro nerd when i put them on but man, it brought back so many memories of playing hoops with my friends back in the day. did u know that nike used to release these awesome sneaker lines for just $40? now they're like 200 bucks easy. anywayz maxey's journey is super inspiring lol he went from rookie to superstar and still keeps it real about his struggles

πŸ€” The way Tyrese Maxey turned that weird game into his breakout performance is pretty fascinating 🎯. He was basically forced to lead the team due to injuries, and it actually ended up helping him develop as a player πŸ’ͺ. It's awesome to see how Coach Rivers' guidance and the support from teammates like Embiid and Harris helped shape Maxey into an NBA superstar ⭐️.

So Tyrese Maxey's been thru hell and out, fam πŸ™ŒπŸ½πŸ‘ŠπŸ’₯. I mean, think about it - 5 years ago he was throwin' around with the big boys 'cause everyone else was down w/ COVID 🀒. And this youngin had to carry the team on his back like a superhero πŸ¦Έβ€β™‚οΈ! He scored 39 points in his debut game and now he's a superstar 🌟 averaging over 30 points per game!

But here's the thing - he didn't do it alone 🀝. Guys like Joel Embiid, Harris, Harden, and Lowry kept him grounded and helped him stay focused on his game plan πŸ”. And it shows in his stats and shot selection - that three-point shooting is straight fire πŸ”₯!

It's crazy how far he's come, but at the end of the day, he's still a cool cat 🐈 who just happens to be one of the best guards in the league 😎.
