Caf's Decision to Breathe New Life into Africa Cup of Nations Leaves Many Questioning the Future of the Tournament

The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations has been a vintage edition, with its unique blend of late twists, ridiculous goals, and dramatic storylines captivating fans across the continent. The knockout stages saw star names step forward, including Brahim Díaz, Victor Osimhen, and Ademola Lookman, who led hosts Morocco to a major wobble against Tanzania. However, it's hard not to feel that the tournament's future has been put on hold after Caf announced its decision to switch the Africa Cup of Nations from an annual event to every four years starting in 2028.

The news was announced on the eve of the tournament and appears to have left several African football federations feeling miffed, with some even claiming they weren't consulted. The Fifa president, Gianni Infantino, first pushed for this change back in 2020 but later claimed that Caf needed to cut down one of its many competitions in order to allow more games to take place worldwide.

The decision has sparked a lot of debate and left fans wondering if the tournament's future is secure. It seems that Caf had already made up their minds about changing the format months ago, as revealed by an unnamed top-flight manager who spoke to Big Website.

On another note, Eagles fans haven't had the best week, what with Crystal Palace being knocked out of the FA Cup by Macclesfield and captain Marc Guéhi imminently joining Manchester City for a cut-price £20m.

I'm kinda torn about this whole Africa Cup of Nations thing 🤔. On one hand, I get why they wanna mix things up to make it more competitive & all that jazz 💪. But on the other hand, annual events are a big deal for us Africans – we love our football tournaments as much as anyone else! 😂 It's like they're taking away a part of our culture, you know? 🌍 Plus, what about the smaller nations who don't have a huge following or resources to compete every year? Won't that kinda create an uneven playing field? 🤷‍♂️ I just wish Caf would've had a more open conversation with all the stakeholders before making such a big change 💬. Can't we find a middle ground here? 🤞

Man I'm still reeling from that Crazy Africa Cup of Nations drama 😂👀 The whole switching to every 4 years thing has left me feeling like Caf made up their minds months ago 🤔📆 But you know how it is, some decisions can't be rushed, right? It's not like they're taking away our annual AFCON fix or anything 😅 What really gets me though is the lack of communication with the African federations 🤷‍♂️ I mean, come on, consult them before making such a big change? Easy peasy 💁‍♂️ And don't even get me started on the future of the tournament... will it still be as competitive? Will we see more new talent rise to the top? 🤞 The world is watching, Caf! 👀

omg i feel u guys, its like caf just dropped this bomb on us and now we dont even no whats gonna happen to the tournament 🤯🏆. i mean i get it, they wanna make changes and give the games more importance but does it have to be every 4 years? 😩 idk what kinda games the top teams are gonna play if not every year... its like theyre just gonna sit out for a yr or somethin 🤔.

anyways, sad news about crystal palace tho 😢 hope marc guéhi finds his feet at manchester city. and macclesfield lol 😂 just cant believe what happened to them in the fa cup

Yooo! what's good fam 🤔? so caf just dropped that africa cup of nations decision like 3 days before it was supposed to start and now everyone's shook 💥. i feel em, those african football federations gotta be hella salty about not being consulted beforehand 🤷‍♂️. four years is a long time, might as well put the tournament on hold altogether 🕰️. and why did caf need to make this decision in the first place? fifa's been pushing for it since 2020 and now they're trying to cut down one of their own tournaments just to accommodate more games worldwide 🤯. i don't think this is gonna end well 👀. btw, crystal palace getting knocked out of the fa cup was a total joke 😂. marc guéhi's leaving is also a major blow for them 💔

omg i'm so down about this change tho 🤯 like how can u just decide that afcon is gonna be every 4 yrs after everything's been set up lol what about all the teams that have already started training and stuff? 😩 & fifa's been pushing for this since 2020 but now it's coming out of left field i guess caf's trying to cut down costs or something 🤑 but honestly who's gonna be watching afcon if it just happens every 4 yrs lol not saying its the end of the world but it's definitely a big change 🤔 & btw did u catch that match between morocco and tanzania? brahim díaz is such a legend 💥

omg u think this is a good idea to make the africa cup of nations every 4 years tho? it might lead to teams getting burned out or less interested in competing 🤔🏆 idk if its worth it tho, the tournament is already kinda lacking that special something every year when you got teams like Morocco and senegal showing up. plus what about the smaller african countries? do they get a fair chance then? 🤷‍♀️

🤔 The whole thing just feels like they're giving up 🚫 on Africa's premier football stage. I mean, Caf needs to sort out some of the other competitions first before doing that. It's not like the tournament is failing or anything... 🙄 And what's with the lack of consultation? Big Website got the scoop, but who knows how many others were in the dark? 🤫 Not sure if this change will even make things better for the players and fans... 🤷‍♂️

🤔 I'm not sure about this change to make the Africa Cup of Nations every 4 years... it seems like Caf's already made up their minds, huh? 🙃 Sources would've been nice, you know? Don't get me wrong, the tournament's been awesome this year, but switching it up so drastically might just lose some fans. What do we even get from hosting a biennial event if there's only one every 4 years? The scheduling conflicts are gonna be major... and what about smaller teams that rely on AFCON for revenue? 🤷‍♂️

omg u guys can u believe caf just messed up the africa cup of nations lol i mean idk whats the point of having an african tournament if its not gonna be annual anymore 🤔 4 years is like, forever in football terms!! and now im hearing rumors that caf already knew about this change months ago? sounds like they just didn't wanna share it with the rest of us 🙄 anyway i feel bad for the teams that had to deal with all the drama during the tournament, especially morocco against tanzania 😂 those goals tho! on a more serious note though, im worried about the future of african football and how this change is gonna affect the competitions 🤞 fingers crossed they can make it work tho

I think Caf's decision might be more of a stopgap measure to save some cash 🤑. The Africa Cup of Nations has been getting more competitive with each passing year, but it also means they have to split the attention and resources among multiple teams. Giving the tournament every 4 years starting in 2028 could allow them to invest more into preparing for major tournaments like the World Cup. It's also a way to reduce the financial burden on smaller nations 🤔. Of course, some might say it takes away from the excitement of having the tournament every year, but at the end of the day, what matters most is getting football development right in Africa 💪.

omg u guys cant believe this news!! Caf just announced theyre changin the africa cup of nations to evry 4 yrs starting in 2028?? thats like, who cares whats happnin 2 the tournament?? its not like ther ever gonna be another vintage edition like dis one 🤯🏆 i mean, im glad we got to see some amazin goals and storylines but now its all just meh...and what about all the federations that werent consulted?? thats so rude lol

anywayz, lets talk abt sumthin else. Eagles fans r havin a bad wk lol crystal palace got knocked out of the fa cup by macclesfield whoa 😂 and marc guéhi is joinin man city 4 cheap too? thats wild 🤯

I think Caf's decision is a bit dodgy 🤔... it sounds like they already knew they were gonna change the format but didn't wanna ruffle any feathers 🙈. And what's with not consulting some of the smaller federations? It's their tournament, after all 🤷‍♂️. I mean, I get that it's about making the competition more manageable, but can't you just have a smaller group stage and then knockouts like usual? 🏟️ This new every-four-years thing is gonna be a nightmare to organize and will probably lead to some teams being unfairly penalized ⏰. And now the fans are left wondering if it's all worth it 😐...

I'm telling ya, this Africa Cup of Nations business is getting all muddled up 😩. First, they're breathing new life into it, and then BAM! They announce they're only gonna have one every four years starting 2028? 🤯 I mean, what's the point of even having a cup tournament if you're not gonna make it an annual thing, right? And now all these African football federations are getting worked up over this decision... I'm like "dudes, chill out" 😅. It's just one of those things that's gonna take some time to sink in. As for Crystal Palace and Macclesfield, oh man, that was a wild FA Cup exit 🤣... poor Eagles fans 🐦.

OMG 🤯 I'm so confused about this decision lol... I mean I get that Caf wants to mix things up, but switching it from annual to every 4 years? That's like taking away our favorite TV show 📺 and then expecting us to just adapt 😐. I think the fans should've been consulted for sure! It's not just about football, it's about the whole vibe of the tournament being a big deal every year 💥. What if countries start to cancel their national teams' participation? That'd be a total disaster 🚨. And now I'm worried about next year's edition... will it even happen? 🤔

idk about this change... africa cup of nations has always been more than just a football tournament its like a celebration of african football culture but now it feels like theyre just trying to squeeze in more games and make some cash i mean i get it football business is a thing but can't we just keep things simple? and whats with the fifa involvement too? theyre already getting paid enough from their own tournaments

Wow 😂 - I mean, can you imagine if they made the World Cup every 5 years? It'd be absolute chaos! Interesting 🤔 - but on a more serious note, I'm not surprised that Caf is trying to revamp the tournament. With all the other competitions and leagues going on in Africa, it's hard for them to keep up with the demand. Four years might just give them enough time to iron out some of the kinks before it gets back to its old self.

OMG 😱 I'm like so confused about this decision 🤯! The Africa Cup of Nations is literally the most iconic tournament on the continent, and now it's gonna be held every 4 years? That's just crazy talk 💁‍♀️! What's next, are they gonna switch the FIFA World Cup to bi-annually too?! 😂 I get that Caf wants to make some changes, but this feels like a huge step in the wrong direction 🚫. And what about all the smaller teams who rely on the tournament for exposure and development? 🤕 This decision is gonna have a ripple effect, mark my words! 👀
