Aides To Massachusetts Governor Arrested On Cocaine Trafficking Charges
Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey has lost a key aide after he was arrested Tuesday night on cocaine trafficking charges. LaMar Cook, 45, of Springfield, is facing eight counts, including illegally owning a firearm and ammunition.
Cook worked as the deputy director of Healey's Western Massachusetts office until his arrest. A spokesperson for the governor's office said that state officials fired Cook "effectively immediately" after learning of his arrest.
Prosecutors say investigators intercepted eight kilograms of cocaine slated for delivery to an office building where Cook worked, according to authorities. The Hampden County District Attorney’s Office also stated that they seized multiple parcels containing a combined 21 kilograms of suspected cocaine.
Cook was arrested while driving in Springfield on Tuesday evening and pleaded not guilty during his arraignment Wednesday. He was ordered held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing on Friday.
