Horror game Horses has been banned from sale – but is it as controversial as you'd think?

"Horses" Controversy: Steam Ban Raises Questions About Censorship in Gaming Industry

The recent ban of Italian developer Santa Ragione's latest project, Horses, from sale on both Steam and the Epic Games Store has sparked a heated debate about censorship in the gaming industry. Despite its edgy content, including themes of physical violence, psychological abuse, and slavery, some argue that the game's release was not as shocking or radical as initially thought.

Developed by Santa Ragione, the award-winning developer behind MirrorMoon EP and Saturnalia, Horses follows Anselmo, a 20-year-old Italian man sent to spend the summer working on a farm. However, it quickly becomes apparent that this is no ordinary farm, with "horses" - nude humans wearing horse heads - held in captivity.

Gameplay is slow-paced, focusing on mundane tasks such as chopping wood and picking vegetables, which are contrasted with gruesome and unsettling events, including finding a dead body hanging from a tree. While the game's graphics may seem simplistic at times, they effectively convey the sense of unease and discomfort that pervades the experience.

Valve Corporation stated in 2023 that Horses' content was reviewed, citing concerns about onboarding rules and guidelines. Later, Epic Games Store cited violations of their Content Guidelines, including "Inappropriate Content" and "Hateful or Abusive Content," but failed to provide specific details.

The controversy has led some to question the role of censorship in the gaming industry, with many arguing that Horses is not as shocking or radical as initially thought. The game's slow-burning tension and psychological horror approach rather than explicit gore may have contributed to its relative lack of impact.

The ban on Horses has sparked a broader conversation about video games as art and the limits of censorship in the industry. As Santa Ragione alleged, there were no specifics provided by Epic Games Store regarding what content was at issue, raising questions about transparency and consistency in review processes.

In the end, it remains to be seen whether Horses will be released on other platforms or if its ban serves as a warning to developers pushing boundaries in their work. One thing is certain: the debate surrounding censorship in gaming has taken center stage, with far-reaching implications for artistic expression and creative freedom.

idk why they're making such a big deal out of this game 🤷‍♂️ like its not even that deep lol it's just some dude doing chores on a farm and stuff gets weird but not like you know what's gonna happen or anything. censorship is just soooo overrated, devs should be able to push boundaries without being held back by "rules" 😒

I gotta say, I'm kinda glad this game got banned 🤔. Don't get me wrong, it's a cleverly crafted game and all that, but come on, it's just so... graphic 😬. I mean, who needs to see a dead body hanging from a tree in a game? It feels like they're pushing boundaries for the sake of being edgy 🤷‍♂️.

And let's be real, it's not like this is some groundbreaking art piece that's changing the gaming landscape or anything 🎨. It's just a slow-paced horror game with some weird stuff thrown in. I'm all for artistic expression and creative freedom, but there's a time and a place for everything 💁‍♂️.

I think what bothers me most is that developers like Santa Ragione are always looking to push the limits of what's considered acceptable in games 🤔. And while some might say they're being censored too much, I think it's better to err on the side of caution when it comes to graphic content 😬.

I mean, can you imagine if this game was released and it became a thing? Would we be having the same conversation about censorship then? 🤷‍♂️ Maybe so, maybe not. But one thing's for sure: this ban has sparked an interesting debate 💬, and that's what matters 🔥.

I'm so done with these "censorship" debates! Can we talk about how ridiculous it is when devs are literally being policed for their art? I mean, Horses isn't exactly some graphic, hard-hitting experience - it's more like a slow-burning psychological thriller that just happens to be a bit uncomfortable. The fact that Epic Games Store is all secretive about what specifically was the problem with it just makes me think they're trying to cover up their own bias.

And let's not forget, this game already won awards and got rave reviews - if it was really as shocking as everyone says, wouldn't we have heard more about it by now? It's all about the narrative now... who cares what's 'acceptable' or not. The point is that devs should be free to create whatever they want, without some corporate overlords breathing down their necks.

I think the real question here is: what other games are gonna get banned because of some vague, subjective "guidelines"?

I'm so done with these ridiculous bans 🤯! I mean, come on, a game that's supposed to be thought-provoking and uncomfortable? That's what we need more of – not some watered-down crap that's only going to spark outrage from the masses. The whole thing feels like a huge overreaction 🙄...and can someone please explain what exactly is wrong with the graphics? I mean, it's just simple stuff – they're not even trying to be realistic, they're more like... eerie and unsettling 💀. And another thing, what's with all these vague guidelines and no specifics? It's like they're hiding behind some nebulous nonsense 🤔...can't we just have a straight-up conversation about the content instead of beating around the bush? Ugh, I'm so sick of this censorship drama 😒

🤔 I mean, come on, a game about nude people wearing horse heads just because it's slow-paced and has some unsettling moments? That's not exactly what I'd call "hateful or abusive content". 🙄 The ban from Steam and Epic Games Store is ridiculous. It's like they're more concerned with looking good in the public eye than actually protecting people from, you know, actual harm. 🤷‍♂️ And don't even get me started on how vague their review guidelines are... what exactly was wrong with this game? 🤔

I mean, I know some ppl might think Horses is super disturbing, but like, let's not jump to conclusions, right? 🤔 The game's got a slow-burning vibe that's supposed to be kinda unsettling, which can be thought-provoking, you know? It's also making ppl talk about censorship in the gaming industry, which is pretty interesting. I'm all for devs pushing boundaries and exploring new themes, as long as it's done tastefully, of course. And who knows, maybe Horses will get a chance to shine on other platforms once the dust settles 🐴💻

I'm low-key surprised the game got banned so quickly 🤔. I mean, sure it's not exactly a game you'd play with your nonna 😉, but that's kinda the point, right? It's a commentary on some pretty dark themes like slavery and abuse... and yeah, there are horses in the background that aren't actually horses 😅.

I don't think we should be talking about "shock value" when it comes to games, though. That's not fair to the devs who put their hearts into making something as thought-provoking as Horses. Censorship can stifle creativity and make us miss out on some real interesting stories being told 🌎.

It's also weird that Epic Games Store didn't give us any details about what specifically was problematic... did they really think we wouldn't notice? 🤷‍♀️ I guess the real question is, where do we draw the line between art and... well, not art? 🤔

I'm like totally stoked that this game was even made 🤪. I mean, come on, it's not like it's promoting some dark agenda or anything 😂. The whole "horses" thing is just a metaphor for something deeper, you know? It's like, the game is trying to say something about the human condition and our relationship with power and control 🤯.

And can we talk about how ridiculous it is that they were so quick to ban it without even explaining what was wrong with it? I mean, I get it, some people might find it disturbing, but come on, it's not like it's promoting child abuse or something 😂. The fact that they're being so secretive about it just makes me think they're trying to hide something 🤔.

I'm all for artistic expression and creative freedom, you know? And if a game is going to push boundaries, I say let it! It's like, we should be encouraging devs to take risks and try new things, not stifling them with arbitrary rules and guidelines 🚫. The gaming industry needs more games like Horses, that challenge our assumptions and make us think 🤔.

omg did u guys see this news? so some dev gets banned from steam because his game Horses had some nudity and horse heads (lol) and ppl are like "censorship is whack" but like come on it's not that deep lol the game sounds kinda boring too, all chopping wood and stuff. idk if im for or against censorship in games tho, i think its a grey area. maybe devs should just be more considerate of their audience's sensibilities. but at the same time, art is meant to challenge ppl & push boundaries 🤔

idk why they're making such a big deal about this game. it's not like it's gonna get 90s gamers all worked up again 🤣 seriously though, can't these devs just make what they want without having to justify every little thing? it's gaming, not art school 🎨 i mean, if people are gonna freak out over a bunch of guys in horse heads, maybe they're the ones who need some educating on how to take a joke 😂

omg have you tried those new vegan ice cream flavors at the shop downtown? i'm totally on board with that, but back to horses... i mean, what's up with the lack of transparency from epic games store? 🤔 it's like they just decided to ban the game without even explaining why. and honestly, some of the "horses" in the game are kinda creepy, but that's part of the whole point, right? slow-burning tension is where it's at. anyway, speaking of tension, have you ever tried making your own pasta from scratch? it's actually pretty therapeutic...
