Hospitals and clinics are shutting down due to Trump's healthcare cuts. Here's where

US Healthcare Crisis Deepens as Trump's Cuts Take Effect

The devastating impact of US President Donald Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill Act on rural healthcare facilities is becoming increasingly evident. The landmark tax-and-spending legislation, which aims to shrink government spending, has been met with widespread criticism from healthcare providers and patients alike.

Since the law was signed in May, hundreds of clinics and hospital wards have shut down or cut services across the country. Rural hospitals, which already struggle to stay afloat due to limited Medicaid funding, are among those hardest hit. According to researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, over 300 rural hospitals are at risk of closure or cutting services.

The consequences for patients in these communities are dire. White, Native American, and low-income women are disproportionately affected, as they often rely on Medicaid for their healthcare needs. Many will lose access to essential medical care, exacerbating existing health disparities.

The closures are attributed, in part, to the law's provisions that slash federal funding by hundreds of billions of dollars over the coming years. Rural hospitals, which serve high numbers of Medicaid beneficiaries, are particularly vulnerable to these cuts. The loss of funding has forced many facilities to close or scale back services, leaving patients without access to critical care.

In Georgia, St Mary's Sacred Heart hospital in rural Lavonia became one of the first hospitals to shut down its obstetric ward as a result of the law. Patients were directed to seek care at a nearby facility, sparking concerns about limited transportation options and access to emergency services.

The situation is echoed across the country, with clinics and hospitals closing due to financial difficulties and anticipated federal budget cuts to Medicaid. In Maine, family planning provider Maine Family Planning was forced to stop offering primary care to patients due to a provision in the spending legislation that blocks larger abortion providers from receiving Medicaid reimbursements.

In Nebraska, Community Hospital is closing its only health clinic in a small town called Curtis due to financial difficulties and "anticipated federal budget cuts to Medicaid." In New Hampshire, two healthcare centers closed in October, citing changes in Medicaid and federal funding.

The effects of the law are far-reaching, with hospitals and clinics across the country feeling the pinch. Seattle Children's hospital plans to lay off over 350 staffers, while Providence Swedish will cut nearly 300 jobs across more than 100 departments by early 2026.

As the US healthcare system teeters on the brink of collapse, lawmakers must take action to address these critical issues. The closure of rural hospitals and clinics is not just a matter of economics; it's a matter of public health. The federal government must act to provide support for these vital services, ensuring that patients receive access to essential medical care regardless of their location or socioeconomic status.

omg this is so bad 🀯 the us healthcare crisis is getting out of hand and trump's cuts are making it worse😑 rural hospitals and clinics are shutting down left and right and people are gonna suffer because of it πŸ’” patients who rely on medicaid are especially hard hit and i cant believe they didnt think this through before passing the law πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ we need to take care of our ppl not just cut funding for healthcare πŸ™

omg u guys i cant even imagine what its like 2 live in the us rn theyre literally closing down hospitals & clinics left & right cuz of trump's stupid bill 🀯 & its not just rural areas that r affected either low-income women & native american communities are getting hit hard bcos they rely on medicaid for their healthcare needs. i cant even begin 2 think about how people gonna get access 2 basic medical care when theres no hospital nearby. πŸš‘πŸ’‰ my friend from maine has a family planning provider that had 2 stop offering primary care cuz of a provision in the bill & now theyre stuck w/ limited options. this is NOT okay 😑

omg have u ever tried those new avocado toast places in NYC? like i was there with my squad last week and we just had the most amazing brunch at this tiny spot in Williamsburg 🀩 their avocado toast is literally life-changing, btw i think it's so funny how americans can be all about healthcare one min but then suddenly become total foodies the next lol anyway back to rural hospitals, u know, it's like they're fighting a losing battle...

Its so sad to see all these hospitals shutting down πŸ€•... I mean like, people need medical help no matter where they live and who they are. Rural areas are already struggling with limited healthcare options and now its getting worse πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ. The fact that the law is cutting Medicaid funding is just cruel to those already in a tough spot πŸ˜”. We need our government to step in and support these hospitals, not just talk about it πŸ’¬... Its time for action, not just words πŸ™.

πŸ€• this is really worrying stuff - like rural hospitals are already super tough to keep open and now they're gonna lose hundreds of billions of dollars πŸ€‘... it's no wonder patients in these areas are gonna be left high and dry, especially the ones who need Medicaid the most πŸ’‰. I feel so bad for all the people who are gonna lose access to healthcare because of this law πŸ€•. We need some kinda intervention ASAP, like a safety net or something 🚨... can't let our healthcare system just collapse like that πŸ˜“

It's really sad to hear about all the clinics and hospitals closing down πŸ€•. I mean, think about it, a lot of people in rural areas are already struggling to get to see a doctor, let alone have some basic healthcare services available. The fact that these places are shutting down because they can't afford to keep going is just heartbreaking πŸ’”.

I don't know if this law was meant to help or hurt, but it's definitely having the wrong effect πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. I get what Trump was trying to do with his tax-and-spending bill, but this isn't exactly the way to go about it, you know? It's like they're cutting off people's legs without even thinking about where they're going to stand πŸ‘£.

The thing is, these rural hospitals are usually the ones that serve people who need Medicaid the most 🀝. So if we cut those funding sources, what's gonna happen to them then? It's just not right πŸ’”. We need some kind of middle ground here, you know? Find a way to balance out the budget without leaving all these people high and dry πŸ’Έ.

I mean, can't we find a way to make healthcare more affordable for everyone? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ I'm not saying it's gonna be easy, but come on, it's gotta be better than this 😩.

I don't usually comment but I'm really concerned about what's happening to rural healthcare facilities in the US πŸ€•. It's like, how are people supposed to get medical help if all the clinics and hospitals are closing down? I've been following this story and it's just getting worse by the day. The fact that white, Native American, and low-income women are being disproportionately affected is just heartbreaking πŸ˜”. We need to do something to support these communities and ensure they have access to healthcare regardless of their income or location. It's not just about economics, it's about people's lives 🀝.

omg u guys this is soooo sad!! πŸ€• i feel like we're seeing the worst of humanity right now rn with all these hospitals and clinics closing down ppl are literally gonna lose access 2 healthcare 4 good... & it's not just the patients who r affected but also the people who work there - my heart goes out 2 those nurses & doctors who r gonna lose their jobs 🀝 & i'm like what about the ppl in rural areas who already struggle 2 get medical care? this is like, straight outta a bad movie 😩

I'm so worried about what's happening with US healthcare... πŸ€• the cuts to rural hospitals and clinics are insane! I get that we need to balance the budget, but this is just cruel to people who already struggle to get medical attention. The fact that white, Native American, and low-income women will be disproportionately affected is heartbreaking. We can't just leave them behind, especially when it comes to something as essential as healthcare.

I'm also concerned about the impact on Medicaid beneficiaries - they're already struggling to access basic care. I'd love to see lawmakers take action to address these critical issues, but at this rate, it's hard not to feel like we're just kicking the can down the road... πŸ“¦ We need a more comprehensive solution that prioritizes public health over politics.

It's amazing that some hospitals and clinics are already closing their doors, leaving patients without access to emergency services. Seattle Children's hospital laying off 350 staffers? That's just devastating for families who rely on them for care. 😨 The situation is dire, and we need urgent action from the government to provide support for rural healthcare facilities.

πŸ€• this is so messed up... think about all the rural areas that are gonna lose access to healthcare because of one guy's agenda πŸ€‘. and what's even worse is that it's not just about economics, it's about people's lives πŸ’€. those hospitals in Georgia, Maine, Nebraska, New Hampshire... they're closing down and leaving patients with no other option but to drive miles and miles just to get some basic medical care πŸš—. it's like they didn't even think about the consequences of their actions 😩. lawmakers need to step up and do something about this ASAP πŸ’ͺ. we can't let our healthcare system collapse like this... what's next? πŸ‘€

omg u guys can't believe what's happening in the US healthcare system 🀯 they're literally shutting down hospitals and clinics left & right it's like they're trying to sabotage healthcare for ppl who need it most - rural communities are getting hit the hardest, especially low-income women & Native Americans they rely on medicaid 4 healthcare & now it's all being taken away πŸ’ΈπŸš« i mean what even is the point of having a government if they can't protect ppl's health? πŸ€” i know some ppl might say "just move to a different state" but it's not that simple, especially for those living in poverty or rural areas with limited job options... we need 2 take action & demand change πŸ’ͺ🏼

🚨😱 this is crazy the US healthcare system is literally on its knees and nobody seems to be doing anything about it 🀯 the rural hospitals are getting smashed because of those massive budget cuts πŸ€‘ and it's not just the clinics that are closing down, major hospitals like Seattle Children's and Providence Swedish are also being hit hard πŸ₯πŸ’Έ what's even more disturbing is that these cuts will disproportionately affect low-income women and communities of color who already struggle to access healthcare 🀝 this is a disaster waiting to happen and we need someone to step in and fix it ASAP πŸ’ͺ
