ICE officer charged with attacking immigrant rights activist in Chicago suburb

Off-Duty ICE Officer Charged with Assaulting Immigrant Rights Activist in Chicago Suburbs

An off-duty Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer was charged with misdemeanor battery after allegedly attacking an immigrant rights activist at a gas station in the Chicago suburb of Brookfield. Adam Saracco, 68, is accused of physically assaulting Robert Held, 68, who had been following him from the parking lot of the Broadview ICE facility.

According to police reports, held approached Saracco as he was stopping for gas and tried to de-escalate the situation by telling Saracco to "calm down." However, Saracco allegedly threw held to the ground and attempted to take his phone. Held described the incident in an interview, stating that people nearby began honking their horns and Saracco eventually let him go.

Prosecutors initially declined to file felony charges against Saracco, citing the fact that he was over 60 years old and the incident occurred on a public sidewalk. However, after reviewing the case, prosecutors recommended the misdemeanor charge, which was ultimately filed by the police department.

Held has been an outspoken critic of ICE's aggressive deportation policies in the Chicago area, attending numerous protests and being detained at the Broadview facility for eight hours last fall. The incident is the latest in a series of allegations against federal immigration enforcement officials, who have faced accusations of excessive force and racial profiling while targeting cities such as Minneapolis.

The charges against Saracco come as authorities continue to grapple with the consequences of ICE's aggressive deportation policies, which have resulted in thousands of arrests and widespread protests in recent years. As one official noted, "ICE operations... have resulted in unnecessary deaths, broken relationships between law enforcement and our citizens, and an untold amount of terror unleashed on communities."

man, this is like a perfect example of how systems can fail us, you know? ๐Ÿค” like, ICE has these policies that are supposed to be about "enforcing the law", but really they're just perpetuating fear and violence against already marginalized people. and then an off-duty officer gets to act on those biases and just lose control, throwing someone to the ground... it's like, what's happening here?

and I'm thinking, too, about the power dynamics at play. This guy was being followed by someone who'd been protesting his agency's actions... can you imagine how tense that must've been for him? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ and then he gets attacked by a dude who's basically an extension of ICE itself. it's like, the state is using its people to do all this harm, and we're just supposed to sit back and watch?

I mean, I'm no expert on all this, but it seems to me that we need to be having some real conversations about how we deal with these kinds of situations. Like, what are the consequences for officers who act like this? and how can we make sure that our communities feel safe from people in power who might just use their positions to harm them?

it's all so... complex, you know? ๐Ÿ˜ณ but I think that's why we need to keep talking about it, and trying to find ways to create some real change.

omg this is so messed up ๐Ÿคฏ saracco was literally just trying to chill at the gas station and then some ice goon comes after him ๐Ÿ˜ก and now he's being charged with a misdemeanor? that's still way too much imo... i mean i get why they didn't wanna charge him with felony since he's 68 and all but c'mon, assault is assault! ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ robert held has been speaking out against those ice policies for ages and now this happens to him? it's just not right... some people need to be held accountable for their actions ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ

๐Ÿค” This is crazy, right? An off-duty cop beats up some activist at a gas station because the activist wouldn't leave him alone. I don't get it, dude... ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ You're supposed to be law enforcement, not try to silence someone who's questioning your tactics. And 68 years old, that's even older than I am! ๐Ÿ˜‚ What was he thinking? I mean, I'm all for standing up against ICE's deportation policies, but this is just ridiculous. Where are the witnesses, man? Did anyone call the cops on him while he was beating up this guy? ๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿ‘€

๐Ÿค• this is so crazy! i mean, someone gets attacked just for following the guy, trying to de-escalate the situation ๐Ÿ™„. it's like, can't we all just get along? โœŒ๏ธ. and 68 years old, too... shouldn't people at that age be respected a bit more? ๐Ÿค”. i feel bad for robert held, he was just doing his thing as an activist ๐Ÿ’ช. this is why we need to keep fighting for our rights and speaking out against injustice ๐Ÿ’•.

OMG you guys ๏ธ๐Ÿ˜ฑ this is so messed up! I mean, who does that to someone who's just trying to do their job as a rights activist? Saracco's actions are totally unacceptable and he needs to face the consequences. The fact that he was off-duty but still had access to that level of power is wild ๐Ÿคฏ. And can we talk about how prosecutors initially didn't want to charge him with anything because of his age? Like, what does that even have to do with it? He's still a grown man who broke someone's phone and threw them on the ground! ๐Ÿ˜ก

I'm so tired of these corrupt officers just thinking they can do whatever they want and not get held accountable ๐Ÿ˜’. I mean, come on, a 68-year-old man gets beat up by some cop for doing his job? It's just ridiculous ๐Ÿ™„. And what really gets me is that the initial decision to only charge him with misdemeanor battery because he was over 60 years old? Like, no, it's not okay to use your age as an excuse for assault! ๐Ÿšซ The fact that people nearby had to intervene and stop Saracco from taking Held's phone is just heartbreaking โค๏ธ. This whole thing smells like a cover-up to me...

This is a classic case of the establishment trying to silence dissenters ๐Ÿค”. I mean, come on, an off-duty ICE officer gets away with assaulting someone because they're over 60? That's just plain wrong ๐Ÿ˜ก. What's next? Charging activists for exercising their First Amendment rights? It's a clear attempt to intimidate people who speak out against policies that benefit the powerful, not the people ๐Ÿค‘.

And let's be real, this is just another example of the systemic issues we have with law enforcement and immigration agencies. You've got ICE agents like Saracco who are more interested in enforcing their own personal brand of justice than serving and protecting the public ๐Ÿ’ผ. It's time for us to take a closer look at these agencies' track records and hold them accountable for their actions ๐Ÿ“Š.

I'm not surprised that prosecutors initially declined felony charges, though ๐Ÿ˜’. That's what happens when you're part of the system that needs to maintain its own privilege and power โš–๏ธ. But thankfully, the public is finally demanding justice and accountability ๐Ÿ’ช. This should be a wake-up call for all of us: if we don't stand up against these abuses of power, who will? ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ

omg u guys i think this is being taken outta proportion ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ saracco was literally just having a meltdown after some activist dude approached him at the gas station what's wrong with people these days? ๐Ÿ™„ he wasnt even doing anything illegal just driving around and then someone jumps on his car? hold up. also lets be real, ice officers are under so much pressure and stress i feel bad for saracco but at the same time ppl gotta respect others personal space. idk what's more sus - the fact that he assaulted some activist or the fact that he got charged with battery lol

I'm so concerned about what's happening with ICE officers like Adam Saracco ๐Ÿค•. It's not right that they're using their power to intimidate and assault people who are just trying to speak out against injustice ๐Ÿ’”. Robert Held was simply doing his job as an activist, and yet he gets attacked by someone who's supposed to be enforcing the law? That's a serious breach of trust ๐Ÿ˜’.

And I'm also really frustrated that prosecutors initially didn't want to charge Saracco with anything more than a misdemeanor ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ. Given what we know about ICE's policies, it's clear that excessive force and racial profiling are systemic problems that need to be addressed ๐Ÿ’ฅ. We need to hold people like Saracco accountable for their actions, not let them off the hook just because they're older or on a public sidewalk ๐Ÿšซ.

It's heartbreaking to see people like Robert Held who have been subjected to this kind of violence and harassment ๐Ÿ’”. They're fighting for justice and equality, and yet they get attacked by someone who's supposed to be on their side ๐Ÿ˜ค. We need to do better as a society, and we need to hold ICE accountable for its actions ๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿ’ฅ.

๐Ÿ˜• This is getting outta hand, man... like, can't people just chill? ๐Ÿ™„ I mean, Saracco was just tryin' to get gas, and then this guy Robert Held comes at him, tryin' to calm him down... it's crazy! ๐Ÿ˜ฒ And now he's gettin' charged with misdemeanor battery? Like, shouldn't we be focusin' on findin' solutions to these immigration issues instead of beatin' people up over 'em? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ It's just so frustrating, you know? ๐Ÿ˜ค

๐Ÿค” This whole thing is super fishy to me! I mean, an off-duty ICE officer just happens to be attacked by some activist and the prosecutors are all like "oh well, he's 60, let's give him a slap on the wrist"? ๐Ÿ™„ What's really going on here? Is it because this activist has been speaking out against the very same policies that Saracco is supposed to enforce? It's like the system is protecting one of its own instead of doing what's right. I'm not saying Saracco didn't do something wrong, but we need to look at the bigger picture here. The fact that prosecutors initially declined felony charges and only went ahead with misdemeanor ones after some "review" makes me think there's more to it than meets the eye. This whole thing smells like a cover-up! ๐Ÿ‘€

I donโ€™t usually comment but I just can't help thinking about this guy Adam Saracco ๐Ÿค”. Like what's the deal with someone who's just trying to do their job as a cop and then becomes aggressive towards some activist who's just trying to have a conversation? I mean, Robert Held was literally trying to de-escalate the situation and it ended up getting physical ๐Ÿ˜’. And for what? Because Saracco felt threatened or something? It's crazy how sometimes people in power think they're above the law just because of their badge ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ.

And can we talk about how ridiculous the original decision was to not file felony charges ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ? I mean, who decides that an 80-year-old guy is too old to be charged with a serious crime? It's just another example of how the system can fail vulnerable communities ๐Ÿ˜•. Anyway, I hope this guy gets some justice and serves as a reminder that no one is above accountability ๐Ÿ’ฏ.

๐Ÿ˜ฑ this is getting outta hand! An off-duty ICE officer attacking someone for speaking up against their policies? ๐Ÿคฌ that's just unacceptable. I mean, what's next? ๐Ÿšซ targeting activists with lawsuits or worse? We need to stand strong and not let fear silence us. Robert Held has the right to protest and speak his mind, just like anyone else in this country. We can't letICE's aggressive policies continue to hurt people like him. ๐Ÿ’ช we need to support our fellow activists and hold those in power accountable for their actions ๐Ÿš”

๐Ÿ˜• This is so messed up! I mean, what's wrong with people who think they can just assault someone because they disagree with their views? ๐Ÿคฏ Adam Saracco should have known that his actions would be reported and now he's facing charges. It's not like Robert Held was trying to hurt him or anything - he just wanted to talk to him calmly. ๐Ÿ™„ And the fact that prosecutors initially didn't file felony charges because of his age is just ridiculous. I mean, 60 is not old, it's still young enough to know what's right and wrong! ๐Ÿ˜’ This incident just shows how out of touch some people are with reality. We need more activists like Robert Held standing up for what's right, even if it means going up against someone in power. ๐Ÿ’ช
