Immigrant whose skull was broken in eight places during Minn. ICE arrest says beating was unprovoked

A US citizen of Mexican descent has been left with eight broken bones and five life-threatening brain hemorrhages after a violent arrest by immigration officers in Minnesota. Alberto Castañeda Mondragón, who came to the US on a temporary visa nearly four years ago, was detained while running errands with a friend.

The incident took place on January 8 outside a shopping center in St Paul. ICE agents allegedly pulled him from the car, threw him to the ground, handcuffed him, and then punched him repeatedly before hitting his head with a metal baton, which is not typically used for such purposes.

Despite entering the country legally in March 2022, Castañeda Mondragón was deemed an overstayer after his arrest. However, a federal judge later ruled that his detention was unlawful and ordered him released from ICE custody.

Castañeda Mondragón has been struggling to recall memories of his life in the US, including those with his 10-year-old daughter, whom he can no longer remember due to severe head injuries. His family relies on him for support, but it's unclear whether he'll be able to continue working and earning a living.

The incident highlights ongoing issues with ICE operations in Minnesota, which has sparked calls for greater accountability from state officials and elected representatives. While the Trump administration claims that ICE limits its operations to immigrants with violent rap sheets, Castañeda Mondragón does not have such a record.

In response to widespread public protests following two fatal shootings of US citizens by immigration officers in Minneapolis, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz posted on X, saying "Law enforcement cannot be lawless." Thousands of aggressive and untrained agents from the federal government continue to injure and terrorize Minnesotans, according to Walz.

Castañeda Mondragón's case is a stark example of how immigration detainees can suffer at the hands of ICE officers. His arrest was caught on video, showing him stumbling and being dragged away by agents. The incident has raised questions about the use of excessive force by federal law enforcement agencies in Minnesota.

The Department of Homeland Security, which includes ICE, has declined to comment on Castañeda Mondragón's injuries despite repeated requests from The Associated Press.

🤕 this is just heartbreaking what happened 2 Alberto Castañeda Mondragón he went 2 the US on a temp visa & everything was fine but then ICE comes out of nowhere hits him w/ a metal baton & now he's struggling 2 remember his own daughter 🤯 it's like they're more concerned w/ following rules than human life. u need 2 wonder how many other people have suffered at the hands of these agents. minnesota gov Tim Walz might say law enforcement can't be lawless but what does that even mean? 🤔

this is so worrying 🤕... it's not right that Alberto was detained and then beaten like an animal - i mean, what happened to the promise of a fair and humane immigration system? it's clear that ICE officers are just plain reckless and untrained, using excessive force on innocent people. but what's even more frustrating is that this guy came here legally and has been paying taxes all these years, only to be treated like a criminal because of his status... and now he's struggling to remember his own life, it's just heartbreaking 😔... we need to see real accountability from the state officials and elected reps in Minnesota, they can't just stand by and let this kind of abuse happen.

🤕 This case is a heart-wrenching example of the need for more stringent oversight and accountability within ICE operations. The use of excessive force against an individual who was deemed an overstayer, but had no prior record of violent behavior, raises serious concerns about the agency's adherence to established protocols. The fact that Castañeda Mondragón has suffered severe and long-lasting injuries, including life-threatening brain hemorrhages, is a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of such actions.

Furthermore, the government's response to this incident, while well-intentioned, falls short of addressing the systemic issues at play. Governor Tim Walz's statement about law enforcement not being able to be lawless is a necessary clarion call, but it must be accompanied by concrete measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The fact that Castañeda Mondragón's arrest was caught on video and has sparked widespread public protests highlights the need for greater transparency and accountability within ICE. It is imperative that state officials and elected representatives take immediate action to address these issues, including implementing new protocols to reduce the risk of excessive force being used against detainees.

Ultimately, this case serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of flawed policies and inadequate oversight. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that such incidents do not occur in the future and that those responsible are held accountable for their actions. 💔

man this is just insane what happened to that guy he was just minding his own biz with a friend and then BAM! ice agents come out of nowhere and start beating him up like a dog for being an overstayer it's crazy how they can get away with this stuff especially when they're caught on camera. and now he's got eight broken bones and life-threatening brain hemorrhages which is just devastating for his family too, i mean, who can afford to take care of a loved one who's struggling to remember their own daughter? it's not just about the law, it's human lives and dignity at stake

man I feel bad for this dude Alberto he got caught up in a super complicated situation and now his life is literally being torn apart eight broken bones five brain hemorrhages that's just crazy 🤯 and it's not like he did anything wrong, he was just out running errands with his friend. the fact that ICE agents took him down and beat him up like that, it's just inhumane. I know people are mad about the situation but let's try to understand where Alberto is coming from, he came here on a temporary visa for a reason, he wants to provide for his family 🤝

I also feel bad for his daughter, she must be going through so much not knowing her dad anymore 🌹 and it's not like this was preventable, if the authorities were more careful, maybe things wouldn't have gone down like that. the governor's statement is all well and good but what about the people who are getting hurt on a daily basis? we need to find a way to address these issues without turning on each other 🤝

😔 this is so messed up how can they just throw someone with life threatening brain hemorrhages down the road? i mean, Alberto came to the US legally and was supposed to be getting a fresh start, not being beaten by ice agents. his daughter's memory loss because of these injuries is heartbreaking 🤕 what kind of system lets this happen in a country that prides itself on being safe for all its citizens?

I think its not a big deal that this guy got beat up by immigration officers 🤷‍♂️. I mean, he was already an overstayer and had been living in the US for four years, so maybe he was just lucky to be in a situation where he got caught. And yeah, maybe ICE agents are being a bit heavy-handed, but who doesn't like a good fight every now and then? It's not like they're trying to hurt anyone on purpose... probably just a case of someone getting a little too big for their britches 😒.

🤕 can't believe these ppl are still gettin away with this kinda stuff... 8 broken bones and brain hemorrhages? that's just not right... & they're still sayin ICE is limitin its ops to violent offenders? seems like a bunch of hooey to me. what's goin on over there in Minnesota, is nobody watchin these agents? 🚔

I mean, the fact that he can't even remember his own daughter's face anymore... that's just heartbreaking. and it's not like he was doin nothin' wrong, either. he came here with papers, but somehow he gets pinched by ICE anyway... doesn't seem right to me.

We need some real accountability here, ya know? these agents gotta be held accountable for their actions. & the governor's just sittin there, sayin "law enforcement can't be lawless"... how 'bout gettin some laws on the books that protect ppl from abuse like this? 🚫
