Irish man with valid US work permit held in ICE detention for five months

US Immigration Officials Under Fire for Detaining Irish Man with Valid Work Permit

A five-month detention has left an Irish man, Seamus Culleton, facing deportation despite having a valid work permit and no criminal record. The case highlights the inconsistencies in US immigration laws and procedures.

Culleton, 45, is married to a US citizen and runs a plastering business in Boston. He entered the country on a visa waiver programme in 2009 but overstayed his initial 90-day limit. After marrying his US-born wife, Tiffany Smyth, he obtained a work-approved authorisation tied to a green card application.

However, despite having all the necessary documentation, Culleton was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during a random sweep at a hardware store in Boston in September 2025. His lawyer, Ogor Winnie Okoye, described him as a "model immigrant" who had become the victim of an inept system.

Culleton was initially released on $4,000 bond after a judge approved his release, but authorities continued to detain him without explanation. The situation worsened when his attorney appealed, and ICE agents claimed that Culleton had signed documents agreeing to deportation, despite saying he did not.

The case raises concerns about the handling of immigration cases by US authorities. "He's never been arrested," said Okoye. "He's married to a US citizen. He owns his own business. He's established a life here. He's done everything right." The detention has taken a toll on Culleton's mental and physical health, with reports of poor living conditions, inadequate food, and limited exercise.

The incident is part of a growing trend of Irish citizens seeking consular assistance due to deportation concerns in the US. Last year, 65 Irish citizens sought help from their government, up from just 15 in 2024.

Culleton's future remains uncertain, but his family and supporters are urging for him to be released and allowed to attend his final interview. The case highlights the need for greater oversight of immigration authorities to ensure that individuals like Culleton receive fair treatment under the law.

๐Ÿ˜• this is just plain wrong man's life is being ruined by red tape and some dude in a suit making bad calls ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ Seamus Culleton has done everything right, got married, built a business, and still he's facing deportation for being a bit late with his paperwork ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ it's like the US immigration system is broken, and nobody seems to care about fixing it ๐Ÿ’” the poor guy's been living in limbo for five months, with no end in sight ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ and what really gets me is that he's not even a bad guy, just an honest immigrant trying to make a life for himself ๐ŸŒŽ

๐Ÿค— come on guys, can't we all just calm down about this one? ๐Ÿ™ i mean, Seamus Culleton's got a valid work permit and he's been living here with his wife for years... what's really going on here is that our immigration system is broken ๐Ÿšจ. it's not personal, it's not political, it's just people getting messed up in the system ๐Ÿ˜ž. he's married to a US citizen, owns a business, and has no record ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. let's focus on fixing the flaws rather than pointing fingers ๐Ÿ‘Š. can't we all just try to be more understanding and compassionate towards each other? ๐Ÿค

Dude, this is crazy! ๐Ÿคฏ I mean, who detains someone with a valid work permit? That's like getting caught at airport security with no luggage and being sent to detention ๐Ÿ˜‚. But seriously, this Irish guy Seamus has been through it for 5 months now and his mental health is taking a hit ๐Ÿค•. He's got a wife, a business, the whole works! What did he do wrong? It's like they're trying to deport him to the land of leprechauns ๐Ÿ˜œ. The system needs to get its act together and treat people with some fairness, ya know? ๐Ÿ‘

I mean come on ๐Ÿ™„, how can you say US immigration officials are incompetent when they're just doing their job? It's not like Seamus was trying to sneak in or anything, he overstayed his visa and now he's paying the price. You can't expect him to know about all the loopholes and exceptions in the system. His "model immigrant" status doesn't automatically entitle him to a free pass. And what's with all the sympathy for him? He's not exactly a victim here, he made a mistake and now he's facing the consequences. I'm not saying the detention conditions are ideal or anything, but if he's really as perfect as his lawyer says he is, then maybe he should be released on even more generous terms than $4,000 bond ๐Ÿค‘.

I'm so worried about Seamus Culleton, this guy is just a model immigrant with a valid work permit & no criminal record ๐Ÿคฏ He's been living in the US for 16 years, married to a US citizen, owns his own business... what more can he do? ๐Ÿค‘ The fact that ICE detained him without explanation or proper documentation is just crazy ๐Ÿ˜ฑ They need to sort out their immigration system ASAP because this kind of thing can happen to anyone.

Ugh, this is so not right ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿ˜ก. I mean, come on, a guy with a valid work permit and no criminal record gets detained for months? It's like they're making it up as they go along. Seamus Culleton is basically a model immigrant - he's got a job, a wife, a business... what more can you want? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ He's not even trying to hide anything from the authorities. The fact that his lawyer says he signed documents agreeing to deportation without him knowing is just ridiculous. Like, how do you even sign something like that and then claim you didn't know what it meant? ๐Ÿค”

This whole situation is a nightmare for people who've followed all the rules and done everything right. It's not fair to punish them with months of detention and poor living conditions. We need some serious reforms in our immigration system to make sure people like Seamus get the help they deserve, not the boot ๐Ÿ’ช๐ŸŒŸ

๐Ÿคฏ OMG this is so messed up! I mean, I get it, laws are in place, but come on, a 5-month detention without even knowing why? ๐Ÿ˜ฑ Seamus has been living his best life in Boston with his US-born wife and building his own plastering business. He's done everything right and still gets stuck in this bureaucratic nightmare ๐Ÿคฏ. And to make matters worse, he was released on $4,000 bond only to be detained again without explanation... what's going on?! ๐Ÿ˜ก

This is exactly why we need better oversight of our immigration authorities - someone needs to hold them accountable for treating people like Seamus with dignity and respect! ๐Ÿ™Œ The fact that 65 Irish citizens are now seeking consular assistance due to deportation concerns just shows how broken the system is ๐Ÿค•. I'm all for fairness, equality, and human rights... this case is a total slap in the face ๐Ÿ‘Š.

๐Ÿˆ this is so unfair ๐Ÿคฏ seamus culleton has done everything right, married to a us citizen, owns his own business and even paying taxes... what did he do wrong? ๐Ÿค‘ it's not like he overstayed by 10 days or something, just over a year too many... and now he's been through this traumatic experience, poor guy is going mental in detention ๐Ÿ˜ฉ and meanwhile the system is still broken... has anyone checked on how many other people are going through this? ๐Ÿค” what about all those irish citizens who were seeking consular help last year? does it just stop at culleton? ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ we need to know more about these laws and procedures so that someone like seamus doesn't get caught in the system again ๐Ÿ’ก

๐Ÿคฏ Can u believe this?! So some Irish dude Seamus Culleton is gettin detained by ICE despite havin a valid work permit and no record ๐Ÿ™„. Like, what's goin on in them immigration offices? He got married to a US citizen, run his own business... he's basically the ultimate model immigrant ๐Ÿ‘! But noooo, ICE still tryna deport him. Poor dude's mental and physical health is sufferin 'cause of this mess ๐Ÿค•. It's like they don't care about people's lives. He was released on bond for a sec but then they just kept holdin him without explainin why... ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ What's the deal? They need to sort out this immigration mess ASAP! ๐Ÿ‘Ž

Umm this is crazy ๐Ÿคฏ I mean what even is going on here?! So Seamus has a valid work permit, he's married to a US citizen, he owns his own business... everything checks out right? But still gets detained by ICE for 5 months without any explanation! It's like they just wanna deport him or something. And now the whole thing is messed up because he signed some papers saying he wants deportation but he didn't actually mean it ๐Ÿค”. I'm so confused.

And what about his mental and physical health? He's been living in a pretty bad environment, eating crap food and not getting any exercise... poor guy ๐Ÿค•. The worst part is that the authorities are being all secretive and stuff, saying they don't have to tell him anything because of "immigration procedures" ๐Ÿ™„.

It's just so unfair. I mean we're talking about a normal person here who's done everything right, just trying to live his life in the US. And then BAM! ICE comes along and starts making his life all messed up ๐Ÿ˜’. Can't they just treat people fairly and with respect? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

I dont get why theyre detaining him if he has a valid work permit ๐Ÿค”. Its just not right, youre basically locking someone up over an honest mistake with paperwork ๐Ÿ“. His case is super weird, i mean, hes got a wife who's a US citizen and hes running his own business, what more proof does the immigration people need that hes a good guy? ๐Ÿค‘ The fact that he was detained for five months already takes its toll on mental health, now theyre gonna make him face deportation again? ๐Ÿ˜“ And whats with these random sweeps at hardware stores? Like, whats the logic behind that? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

omg this is so messed up ๐Ÿคฏ US immigration officials r totally botching it. like, Seamus has a valid work permit and no criminal record, but they're still trying 2 deport him? its not even like he overstayed his visa by much, just a few months more than the initial 90-day thingy. and hes got a wife who's a us citizen, he's got a business... what more does he need 2 prove?

i cant believe they kept him detained 4 so long without explanation, and now his lawyer is saying hes signed away his rights or watever ๐Ÿคช newsflash: just cuz he didnt fight it in court doesnt mean he agreed 2 deportation. its like, basic human rights r being ignored here.

anywayz, i hope Seamus gets released ASAP and can finally get 2 that final interview. he dont deserve this kind of treatment ๐Ÿ˜”

this is so not cool ๐Ÿค• seamus culleton's situation is literally a nightmare ๐Ÿ˜ฉ he had everything going right - valid work permit, married to a us citizen, own business... but still got caught up in this mess ๐Ÿคฏ how can you get detained without explanation or any real reason? it's like they just decided to pick on him and now his life is being torn apart ๐Ÿ’” the mental and physical toll on him is huge, not to mention the financial stress on his family ๐Ÿ˜ฉ and what really gets me is that he signed those documents saying he agreed to deportation, but clearly didn't ๐Ÿ™„

i think this case highlights the need for more transparency and accountability from immigration authorities ๐Ÿ•ต๏ธโ€โ™€๏ธ we need to make sure that everyone is treated fairly under the law, regardless of their background or situation ๐ŸŒŽ

ICE is like, totally messing up ๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ

US Immigration laws are like, a total mess ๐Ÿ—‘๏ธ๐Ÿ’”

[Image of a person running away from a problem with their arms outstretched, looking stressed ๐Ÿ˜ฉ]

Can't we all just get along... and have valid work permits? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

What's going on here is a total mess ๐Ÿคฏ! First off, it's like, come on US Immigration officials, get your act together! This guy Seamus has a valid work permit, no criminal record, and he's married to a US citizen. That's what they call a "model immigrant" ๐Ÿ˜‚. What exactly did he do wrong? And why is the system so inept that it keeps detaining him despite all the paperwork being in order?

And let's talk about this green card application stuff... seems like more red tape to me ๐Ÿ“. Can't we just simplify things and make it easier for people to come here legally? This guy has built a life, owns his own business, and is contributing to the community. What's he supposed to do, start over from scratch in Ireland?

This raises some serious questions about our immigration policies and how they're being enforced. Is this just another example of the US government not prioritizing its own citizens' rights? I mean, Seamus has a wife who's a US citizen, shouldn't that count for something? ๐Ÿค”

omg this is so unfair ๐Ÿคฏ seamus culleton has everythin right, he's a good guy who followed the rules but got caught in the system. it's like, what even is the point of having a valid work permit if you're just gonna get detained and deported? ๐Ÿค” i mean, his lawyer said he's a model immigrant who did everything right, but so far, the system ain't listenin ๐Ÿ˜”. culleton's health is sufferin' due to the poor conditions in detention, that's just not okay ๐Ÿšฝ. we need to get our government to step up and make sure ppl like seamus are treated fair ๐Ÿ‘Š.

Ugh ๐Ÿ˜ฉ this is just crazy ๐Ÿคฏ Seamus got a valid work permit, married to a US citizen, ownin' his own business and he's gettin' detained? That's just not right ๐Ÿ’” He's never been in trouble with the law, done everything by the book and this is what happens to him? ๐Ÿ˜ก ICE needs to rethink their whole process 'cause it's clear they're messin' up ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ The fact that he was released on $4k bond but still detained without reason is just ridiculous ๐Ÿค‘ Poor guy's mental health is sufferin', livin' in poor conditions and gettin' fed crap food... what's the point of even havin' a work permit if you're gonna get treated like this? ๐Ÿ˜ค It's a classic case of an inept system and it needs to change ASAP ๐Ÿ”„

๐Ÿค” this is crazy, a 5 month detention without explanation? what does it take to get rights in this country? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ seamus has been living here, working, paying taxes and building a life... it's not like he just waltzed in. the fact that ice agents are making him sign docs saying he wants deportation is straight outta a bad cop movie ๐Ÿ“บ his lawyer is right, he's never been arrested, married to a us citizen, own business... what more proof does he need? ๐Ÿ˜”
