James Anderson: Former England bowler to captain Lancashire in County Championship at age of 44 next season

Lancashire to be led by veteran bowler at 44 as Anderson takes helm.

Former England international Jimmy Anderson will captain Lancashire in the upcoming County Championship season with a new role that marks his third stint as skipper of the club, according to reports.

The 43-year-old right-arm fast bowler made his debut for Lancashire in 2002 and has been an integral part of the team's success. After stepping into the captaincy on an interim basis last season, Anderson will now lead the team permanently with a new contract signed in November.

Anderson expressed his gratitude towards former Lancashire teammate Steve Croft, the club's head coach, who praised Anderson as "an outstanding leader" whose influence on the squad is immense. The veteran bowler also acknowledged the support he received from his teammates and coaches, adding that he looks forward to leading the team into the new season.

Anderson will face a tough challenge in taking Lancashire to promotion back to Division One but has expressed confidence in the team's ability to achieve their goals with a "fantastic group of players" and great blend of youth and experience. His first match as captain will be away at Northamptonshire on April 3, 2026.

Anderson signs two-year deal for Hampshire

Australia's Michael Neser has signed up with Hampshire for six games of the County Championship season before the T20 Blast begins, adding value to their attack alongside Kyle Abbott. The 35-year-old bowler took a five-wicket haul against Australia in the second Ashes Test last week.

omg i'm lowkey hyped about jimmy anderson takin over lancashire 🀩 he's like the ultimate fast bowler captain πŸš€ & i think he's gonna bring that winning vibe back to the team! 44 is def still young in cricket years lol πŸ˜‚ + he's already got that leadership experience from his previous stints, so i'm all for it πŸ’ͺ now let's see him take lancashire to division one πŸ†

lol just think about it, Lancashire is getting led by a 44-yr-old bowler who's still got the goods, Anderson's got this πŸ˜‚! Imagine him yelling "give me that ball back" to his teammates all day, every day 🀣. But seriously, with guys like Jimmy on board, you'd think they've got a good shot at promotion back to Division One. Problem is, it's gonna be tough - those teams are stacked, and Anderson's gotta prove he can handle the pressure... or else he'll be bowling for his life (pun intended) 😜.

😊 OMG you won't believe this! Jimmy Anderson is taking over as captain of Lancashire at 44 and I am beyond hyped for him!!! πŸŽ‰ He's been an icon for the team for years and now he gets to lead them into new challenges. I mean, who wouldn't want to be led by one of the greatest fast bowlers of all time? πŸ˜‚ It's gonna be so interesting to see how he navigates the team through the ups and downs of the County Championship season. And can we talk about how amazing it is that he's getting a new contract?! πŸ’ͺ Two years is a long time, and I just know Lancashire is gonna kill it under his leadership! πŸš€

omg what happened to lancashire's batting line up?! 44 is young for a captain lol and i'm not sure if jimmy anderson has it in him to take them to promotion but he does have experience and that's something. hopefully steve croft can help guide him through the tough times 🀞

just saw this news about jimmy anderson taking over lancashire cricket team 🀝 he's been with the club for ages so it makes sense that they'd pick him to lead them now he seems like a pretty down-to-earth guy too, so fingers crossed for him πŸ‘ the challenge of getting them promoted is on, but if anyone can do it, it's anderson & co πŸ’ͺ

he's still got it lol πŸ™Œ 44 and taking on captaincy role? that's dedication! i'm rooting for Lancs to make it back to Division One, Anderson's got the skills and experience to lead them there πŸ’ͺ but tough competition ahead, gonna be a thrilling season. what do u think about Neser joining Hampshire? he sounds like a great addition to their attack 🎯

so Jimmy Anderson is taking over as captain of Lancashire at 44? that's actually really cool 😊. he's been with the team for ages and knows what it takes to be successful, plus he's got a ton of experience under his belt which can't hurt when leading the team into promotion battles. i think its great that he's got such a good relationship with Steve Croft too, they must have worked well together on and off the pitch. Lancashire's got a tough road ahead but i've got faith in Anderson to get them there πŸ‘

πŸ€” just thinkin about jimmy anderson leadin lancashire cricket team now he's 44 but still got the skills gotta respect the lad πŸ’ͺ maybe they got a good shot at makin promotion back to division one πŸ† hope they can do it under his leadership πŸ‘Š

So they're putting Jimmy Anderson, who's still pretty young, at 44 in charge of Lancashire? I get why though, he's had a lot of experience and is a great bowler. But what's the thought process behind that decision? Is it because he's proven himself to be a good leader already? He seems like a humble guy too, which is good for the team. I guess it's all about finding the right person for the job and Lancashire thinks Jimmy's their guy! πŸ€”

Wow! 🀩 Lancashire's new captain Jimmy Anderson is like, a legend on the field! I mean, he's been there since 2002 and has led the team to so many wins. His experience is going to be super helpful in getting them back to Division One. And it's awesome that Steve Croft trusts him as an outstanding leader 😊. Can't wait to see Anderson lead his team into the new season! πŸ‘

lol what's next Lancashire gonna play cricket on Mars lol πŸš€πŸ I mean serious though Anderson's not getting any younger and with a new contract it's like he's trying to defy Father Time, is 44 still young for a cricketer? πŸ’β€β™‚οΈ Plus with the state of their squad how's he gonna get them promoted back to Div One? πŸ˜… gotta be nice for the fans but realisticly can they do it without any major signings? πŸ€”

Wow 🀯, Jimmy Anderson's leadership skills are going to be put to the test this season! I think it's awesome that he's been given another chance to lead Lancashire and I'm curious to see how he'll navigate the tough challenge of promotion back to Division One πŸ˜…. The fact that he's got a great mix of youth and experience in his squad bodes well for their chances, fingers crossed they can pull it off! πŸ‘
