Jefferson sues drug companies and pharmacy benefit managers over soaring insulin pricing

Pennsylvania's largest health system, Jefferson Health, has taken a stand against the soaring cost of insulin in the US market. The system, which employs over 58,000 people and provides diabetes medication to patients, claims that pharmaceutical companies and pharmacy benefit managers have been working together to inflate prices.

According to the lawsuit filed by Jefferson, the three major insulin manufacturers - Eli Lilly, Novo Nordisk, and Sanofi - started charging upwards of $20 per vial in the 1990s. Fast forward to today, and prices have skyrocketed by over 1,000%. The system alleges that these companies conspired with major pharmacy benefit managers like CVS Caremark, Express Scripts, and Optum Rx to create an "insulin pricing scheme" that has left patients struggling to afford the life-saving medication.

The lawsuit argues that even the recent price cuts implemented in 2023 were insufficient. These cuts only applied to select insulin products, and the prices in the US market remain significantly higher than in other countries. For instance, a one-month supply of Ozempic was selling for $936 in America last year, compared to just $147 in Canada and $83 in France.

Jefferson's move follows similar lawsuits from cities across the US, including Philadelphia, which is also part of a larger, nationwide litigation involving over 550 state and local governments, companies, and unions. The system's complaint was filed in New Jersey as part of this broader case, highlighting its commitment to fighting for affordable healthcare for Pennsylvania patients.

I feel so bad for those people struggling with diabetes πŸ€•. Insulin is literally a lifesaver, but it's like these companies are playing games with our lives πŸ’Έ. I mean, 1,000% increase in prices? That's just crazy! And to think they're working together with pharmacy benefit managers to keep the prices high πŸ˜’. It's not right that we have to pay more for this medication than people in other countries 🌎. Jefferson Health is doing the right thing by taking a stand and filing a lawsuit πŸ’ͺ. We need more voices like them fighting for affordable healthcare πŸ‘₯.

Man, insulin prices are crazy πŸ’ΈπŸ€―! You'd think that just because you're sick, you shouldn't have to break the bank, right? But here's the thing - it's not just about the companies and pharmacies making money off of us; it's also about how we, as a society, value people's lives. I mean, who's going to be the one to say "you know what, let's raise insulin prices so some rich people can afford it better"? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

I think this is a huge example of systemic failure - our healthcare system should be about helping people get the care they need, not just making a profit off of them. And I think we need to have real conversations about why insurance companies and pharmaceuticals are able to charge such outrageous prices. Is it because we're not holding them accountable enough? Because we're not pushing for change hard enough? We gotta keep fighting for affordable healthcare, folks! πŸ’ͺ

I mean, can you believe insulin prices have gone from like $10 a vial back in the 90s to over $20 in just one decade?! It's like they're trying to make us all hypoglycemic or something! πŸ€―πŸ’‰ I'm no expert, but it seems crazy that three major companies can just decide to increase prices by over 1000% and then say "oh, we didn't do anything wrong". πŸ˜’ Meanwhile, people are literally struggling to afford their meds. I guess you could say the pharmaceutical industry is a real "sugar" coator πŸ’ΈπŸ‘€

🀯 can't believe insulin prices are that crazy... like, i've heard of prices going up but this is insane! πŸ’Έ 1000% increase? that's just not right. pharmacies and big pharma companies need to work together to make this medication more affordable for people who actually need it. 🀝 my aunt has diabetes and she's always stressing about how much her insulin costs... it's not like the prices have changed that much, but somehow they just got way out of control. πŸ’Έ anyway, kudos to Jefferson Health for taking a stand and filing this lawsuit! πŸ‘

omg have u seen the prices of insulin lately?! 🀯 it's insane! they're literally making ppl pay thru their noses 4 a life-saving medication. i mean whats wrong w/ these pharma companies & pharmacy bms? cant they see how much suffering theyre causing? and its not just pennsylvania either, its happening all over the us. i feel so bad 4 ppl who havt been able2 afford insulin cuz of these outrageous prices. maybe if we can get some real change on this issue, we can make a difference! 🀞

I'M SO FED UP WITH THESE PHARMA COMPANY'S PRICE GOUGING!!! πŸš¨πŸ’Έ THEY'RE JUST MAKING BANKS OFF PEOPLE WHO REALLY NEED THIS MEDICATION! 😑 I mean, insulin is literally the only thing keeping those with diabetes alive, and they're charging an arm and a leg for it. It's just not right! And to make matters worse, they're colluding with these pharmacy benefit managers who are just as bad, if not worse! πŸ’ΈπŸ‘€

I'm totally with Jefferson Health on this one 🀝! It's absolutely insane that pharmaceutical companies and pharmacy benefit managers can just raise prices by 1,000% like they're playing some kind of cruel joke on patients. I mean, $20 per vial in the 90s is already pretty steep, but to see it balloon to thousands of dollars now? It's unconscionable.

And what really gets my blood boiling is that these companies and middlemen are basically colluding to keep prices high. They're like a big cartel, working together to rip off patients who need insulin just to survive. I'm not surprised that the lawsuit alleges they're only making a few token price cuts here and there – it's all about maintaining their grip on this lucrative market.

It's time for some real change. We need more lawsuits like this one, and we need them now πŸ’ͺ. Patients shouldn't be forced to choose between life-saving medication and paying the mortgage or rent. It's basic human decency that we're seeing here – and it's well past due.

I'm so frustrated about the cost of insulin! 🀯 It's like, these big pharma companies are just ripping off patients who need this life-saving medication. I mean, I've heard that prices went from $20 a vial in the 90s to over $30 now? That's insane! And it's not like they're making any more insulin, so what's going on here? πŸ’Έ

I feel for people living with diabetes who can't afford this medication no matter how hard they try. It's just cruel. πŸ€• I hope Jefferson Health's lawsuit can make a difference and bring some change to the prices. Maybe we need to start buying our insulin from Canada or France like those Americans do? πŸ˜‚

🀯 Just read about how Jefferson Health is taking on the big insulin makers in a lawsuit 😩 I'm literally shaking my head over here... like $936 for one month's supply of Ozempic? πŸ€‘ That's insane! And it gets worse - they're saying these companies have been colluding to drive up prices since the 90s πŸ•°οΈ. I mean, what kind of conspiracy is that?! πŸ˜’ Anyway, if you want to learn more about this whole thing and see some mind-blowing data on insulin prices, check out this article: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/jeffer...harma-corporations-pharmacy-benefit-managers/ πŸ’Έ

I'm totally getting angry about this πŸ’” I mean, think about it - insulin is literally a lifesaver, but these big pharma companies are just taking advantage of people who need it the most 🀯 $20 per vial in the 90s? That's crazy! And now it's over 1000% more expensive?! It's like they're playing a game of greed πŸ’Έ. I'm so sick of hearing about price cuts that don't even make a dent in the prices. It's just not fair πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ and it's definitely not okay for patients to have to choose between paying their rent or getting the medication they need 😩. We need to hold these companies accountable and fight for affordable healthcare πŸ’ͺ.

🀯 I mean, come on, insulin prices have gotten completely out of control! πŸ’Έ It's like they're pricing it like a luxury item or something πŸ€‘. And the fact that big pharma and pharmacy benefit managers are working together to keep prices high is just shady πŸ˜’. It's like they don't care about the people who need this medication to survive.

I'm not surprised that US prices are so much higher than in other countries, though. We're always being told to be great at business and competition, but when it comes down to it, it's all about making a quick buck πŸ’Έ. And the fact that some states and cities are taking action against these companies is finally a good thing πŸ™Œ.

But still, we need to see real change here. The prices need to come down, and we need to make sure that these companies can't just inflate them whenever they want πŸ”₯. It's not like patients have a choice – they're stuck with the high prices or they go without their medication altogether πŸ€•. That's just unacceptable.

The pricing scheme for insulin medications is just insane 🀯. I mean, we're talking about a life-saving medication here, but it's been inflated by over 1,000% since the 1990s. It's like they're taking advantage of people who are already struggling with diabetes. And to make matters worse, the recent price cuts were only for select products and didn't affect the market as a whole.

It's interesting that the pharmaceutical companies and pharmacy benefit managers are working together to keep prices high 🀝. It's almost like they have a secret agreement to squeeze out even more profits from patients who need these medications. I think it's time we re-examine our healthcare system and look into ways to make insulin more affordable for everyone. We can't just sit back and let companies take advantage of vulnerable people πŸ’Έ.
