Late San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee honored at City Hall with new bust

San Francisco's City Hall unveiled a new bust of Mayor Ed Lee, the city's first Asian American mayor, replacing that of James Phelan, a former mayor who held anti-Chinese views. The move comes as a poignant reminder of the importance of inclusivity and fighting hate in the city.

Lee, born to Chinese immigrant parents, grew up in public housing and later became a housing rights attorney. After Gavin Newsom's resignation, Lee was elected by the Board of Supervisors to become mayor, marking a historic moment for San Francisco's Asian American community.

Mayor Ed Lee is remembered for tackling tough issues such as homelessness and affordable housing. In 2016, he created the Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing, and later introduced the Affordable Housing Fund to address the growing issue of gentrification.

Despite controversy over his efforts to revitalize the mid-Market area with tax breaks for tech companies, Lee's legacy is defined by his commitment to the city's diverse community. He was a fan of sports, instrumental in bringing the Golden State Warriors to San Francisco, and turned the city into Gotham City for a young boy with leukemia.

Lee passed away in 2017 due to a heart attack at the age of 65, leaving behind a wife Anita who has stated she wants him remembered as "the People's Mayor."

I'm literally so moved by this news 🀯. Replacing that bust of James Phelan with one of Ed Lee is like a big ol' middle finger to the hate and exclusion that Phelan's views perpetuated πŸ”₯. I mean, can you even imagine growing up in SF and being told you're not good enough because of your skin color? No thanks! πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ

Ed Lee's story is literally the definition of the American Dream... or at least, it should be πŸ˜”. From public housing to the mayor's office, he's proof that if you work hard and fight for what's right, you can make a real difference 🌟. And let's not forget all the good stuff he did for this city - tackling homelessness, affordable housing, and bringing in the Warriors? What more could you ask for?! πŸ€

I'm just so grateful to have had Ed Lee as our mayor, even if it was for such a short time ⏱️. Anita's call for him to be remembered as "the People's Mayor" is literally the most perfect thing I've ever heard ❀️. We need more leaders like Ed Lee who care about their community and want to make a real impact 🀝.

idk why they had to change it now πŸ˜’ - seems like a nice gesture, but what about all the other changes thats been happening in sf? πŸ€” like where did all the affordable housing go? anyway, i think its great that ed lee is finally getting the recognition he deserves... hes always been about the people, not just the rich tech folks πŸ€‘. and btw, what happened to all his housing initiatives after he left office? still feel like the city didnt do much to address homelessness πŸ’”

I'm loving this move by SF City Hall πŸ™Œ. Replacing that old bust with one of Ed Lee is like, totally necessary. I mean, can you imagine if they left it up? It'd be like holding onto a piece of hate history, you know? James Phelan's views were straight outta another era... let's not revisit those times 🚫. Anyway, Ed Lee was a total hero for the community - tackling homelessness and affordable housing issues was no easy feat. I remember his efforts to bring the Warriors to SF was like, a dream come true for sports fans ⚾️. And, omg, he turned San Francisco into Gotham City for that little boy... pure heart ❀️. We need more leaders like Ed Lee who truly care about everyone's well-being 🌈.

πŸ€” I'm loving this move by San Francisco's City Hall to replace that old bust with Ed Lee's portrait! It's like they're sending a clear message that everyone deserves respect and inclusion, regardless of their background 🌈. I mean, think about it - Ed Lee was born to Chinese immigrant parents and grew up in public housing, which is like, totally the opposite of what you'd expect from a mayor πŸ’ͺ. He really put his foot down on issues like homelessness and affordable housing, and for that, we should all be grateful πŸ™. It's also cool to see how he brought the community together - who would've thought that Ed Lee was a fan of sports? πŸ˜‚ But seriously, this new bust is a reminder that everyone deserves to be remembered for their positive contributions, not just their controversies. Anita Lee was spot on with her "People's Mayor" comment πŸ™Œ.

omg 🀯 just saw that SF City Hall unveiled a new bust of Ed Lee πŸ™Œ finally giving him the recognition he deserves! It's about time, you know? he was literally the heartbeat of this city, tackling issues everyone else avoided πŸ’ͺ and making sure our community felt seen and heard. his legacy is still so inspiring, especially for underrepresented groups like my own asian american fam πŸ‘¨β€πŸ»πŸ’• it's beautiful to see a mayor who wasn't afraid to break barriers and take on tough topics 🀝 like homelessness and gentrification. let's keep his memory alive and honor the people's mayor πŸ’—

omg i just saw this on my feed and im literally getting all the feels 😊!!! i mean mayor ed lee was literally the people's mayor, you know? he came from nothing (no pun intended lol) and became one of the most powerful ppl in sf. and can we talk about how he paved the way for more ppl like him to lead our city? 🀝 his legacy is so inspiring, especially with the new bust at city hall. it's like, a reminder that we gotta keep fighting for inclusivity and respect for all. and btw, i had no idea he was such a fan of sports lol πŸ€πŸ”₯ anyway, i'm def low-key thinking about starting a fundraiser to build more affordable housing units in sf... πŸ’ΈπŸ’•

omg u guys think it's just a coincidence that they're replacing the bust of James Phelan with Ed Lee's right? like phelan was all about keeping those Chinese people down, and now he's getting wiped from history... meanwhile ed lee is living his best life as "the People's Mayor" lol Anita, wife of ed lee, saying he wants to be remembered that way... sounds suspicious to me. what if anita is trying to spin the narrative to distract us from the fact that ed lee was also a product of the system? like, how did he go from public housing to mayor? what's the real story behind his rise to power? πŸ€”πŸ‘€

Idk, I'm both surprised and not surprised that they're replacing the old bust πŸ€”. Like, on one hand it's awesome that San Francisco is finally getting some representation that reflects its diversity, but on the other hand I think it's kinda weird that they're erasing a part of their history just because someone held some anti-Chinese views in the past 😐. And what about the mid-Market area thingy? Shouldn't they be talking about the good and the bad at the same time? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ Still, I guess it's a step in the right direction for inclusivity and all that πŸ’•.

πŸ™Œ This is so cool that San Francisco's City Hall is finally giving Ed Lee the recognition he deserves! It's like they're saying, "Sorry not sorry" to those who held anti-Chinese views back in the day. I mean, can you imagine if our city leaders were still carrying around that kind of hate? It's a total 'Game of Thrones' situation – where the people with power would keep hiding their true colors, but now we know the truth! 🀯 Anyway, Ed Lee's legacy is all about uplifting the community and making sure everyone has access to affordable housing. He was like the 'Iron Man' of San Francisco politics, fighting for what's right even when it wasn't easy. His love for sports, especially the Warriors, still brings a smile to my face πŸ€πŸ‘ And can we talk about how awesome it is that he helped bring some joy to a young boy with leukemia? That's pure 'Wonder' right there 😊. Anita Lee's "People's Mayor" nickname is everything I want to hear – a true leader who put the people first ❀️.

I gotta disagree πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. Replacing James Phelan's bust with Ed Lee's is just another example of the city trying to rewrite history and erase the past. Phelan was a product of his time, and yeah, he had some regressive views, but so did many other politicians back then. It's not like they're erasing his entire legacy or anything. And let's be real, Ed Lee wasn't exactly a saint either πŸ€‘. I mean, have you seen the gentrification plans he introduced? That was pretty much the same as Phelan's plan to revitalize mid-Market with tax breaks for tech companies - just a fancy way of saying "we're gonna push out the old folks and make room for the rich." And don't even get me started on the Warriors thing... that's just a bunch of hype πŸ€.

I'm so glad they finally got around to replacing that old bust... I mean, it's not like anyone was still thinking about James Phelan or anything πŸ˜‚. But seriously, this is awesome news! It's a great reminder of how far we've come in terms of inclusivity and representation in our city. Mayor Lee was truly a trailblazer for the Asian American community and beyond πŸ™Œ. I loved hearing about his background - who knew being born to immigrant parents could lead to so much greatness? πŸ’ͺ And let's not forget his sports legacy - bringing the Warriors to SF is still one of my favorite stories about him 😍. My only suggestion would be to make sure the new bust is actually going to get installed... don't want it to sit in storage forever πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ.
