Lizzo Settles Lawsuit Tied to Sydney Sweeney's 'Great Jeans' Controversy

Lizzo Has Settled Lawsuit Over Unreleased Song Controversially Linked to Sydney Sweeney's Jeans Ad Campaign

Singer Lizzo has reportedly ironed out a settlement with GRC Trust, a Georgia-based company that sued her last year over an alleged copyright infringement tied to an unreleased song referencing Sydney Sweeney's controversy-stirring American Eagle jeans campaign.

The lawsuit stemmed from a TikTok post made by Lizzo in August 2018, where she previewed an unreleased song called "I'm Goin' in Till October." In the post, Lizzo was seen washing a Porsche while wearing a denim top and singing lyrics that appeared to be a play on words referencing Sweeney's ad slogan, "Sydney Sweeney has great jeans."

Critics labeled the American Eagle campaign as a dog whistle for white beauty standards and eugenics, drawing Lizzo into the controversy. The singer later released an extended edition of her EP, but the disputed song did not appear on it.

GRC Trust had claimed that Lizzo's new song infringed on their copyright for the song "Win or Lose (We Tried)" by soul artist Sam Dees. They alleged that they attempted to negotiate with Lizzo and her label before suing, but reached an impasse. The complaint stated that the disputed song incorporated, interpolated, and sampled instrumental and vocal elements from the protected composition.

Following a notice filed in federal court, lawyers for GRC Trust have announced that they have reached a "settlement in principle" with Lizzo's team. As part of the settlement, they expect to file a dismissal of the case with prejudice, meaning they cannot bring it again, within 60 days.

The news comes after Lizzo faced a plagiarism claim over her hit single "Truth Hurts," which was later dismissed after the parties reached a private settlement in 2022.

man... this is like life, right? you're creating something beautiful and someone else comes along and tries to claim ownership of it πŸ€”. i mean, lizzo was just expressing herself, trying out some new sounds, and then suddenly she's being sued for allegedly copying someone else's "win or lose" vibe 🎢. but here's the thing - her team didn't back down and instead chose to fight it out, and now they're coming out on top πŸ†. it's all about perspective, i guess. some people might see this as a win, but others will be like "hold up, that song was already inspired by someone else". and honestly, who gets to decide what's original anymore? isn't it just about creating something new and making it your own? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

omg I'm so happy to see this finally get settled πŸ™Œ! Lizzo is literally a queen and she doesn't deserve all the drama that comes with these kinds of lawsuits πŸ™…β€β™€οΈ. It's just not cool when people try to bully artists over creative differences πŸ’β€β™€οΈ. Anyway, I do think it's interesting how this whole thing started from a TikTok post back in 2018 πŸ“Ή. I mean, who knew that one little song would cause so much stir? 🀯 Let's just focus on celebrating Lizzo's awesomeness and her amazing music πŸ’–! πŸ‘

idk why anyone's surprised lol... like lizzo is a genius and she knew exactly what she was doing πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. that tiktok post was a masterclass in shade-throwing and i think it's actually kinda clever how she referenced sydney sweeney's ad campaign without directly attacking her. also, if grc trust was so upset about the song, why didn't they release their own version of "win or lose (we tried)" instead of trying to sue lizzo? just sayin' πŸ€‘

You know how some people can be like "I'm gonna own that spotlight" 🌟 and then others come along and try to stir up drama? Like with Lizzo and Sydney Sweeney's ad campaign. The thing is, when you're in the public eye, your words and actions have consequences. If Lizzo didn't take ownership of her song, it could've dragged on forever. And then there are cases where people don't come clean about who they sampled or referenced... that's when things get murky. But this all reminds me - settling isn't always the easy way out. Sometimes you gotta face your demons and clear the air πŸ’―. It's like in life, we all mess up at some point, but how we learn from those mistakes is what matters.

aww man... this is just another example of how hard it can be to navigate the music industry, especially when you're already under a microscope πŸ€•... i feel like Lizzo must've been super stressed out with all that drama surrounding her song and Sydney Sweeney's ad campaign... I mean, can't we all just get along? 😩... but seriously, kudos to her for handling it so professionally and coming out on top πŸ’β€β™€οΈ... and ugh, why do these copyright disputes have to be so drawn-out? πŸ™„... hopefully this settlement brings some closure for everyone involved ❀️

OMG, I'm like so glad that Lizzo was able to iron out this whole copyright infringement thing! πŸ™Œ It's all good now that they've settled the lawsuit and GRC Trust is just going to move on with their lives πŸ™ƒ. But seriously, it's crazy how one little TikTok post can cause such a stir and lead to a huge lawsuit 🀯. And I feel for Lizzo, she's already been through so much with that "Truth Hurts" plagiarism thing back in 2022 😩. Anyway, now we can all just enjoy her music without worrying about copyright issues πŸŽ΅πŸ’–

I'm so glad to hear that Lizzo has finally put this drama behind her πŸ™Œ. I mean, who needs all that stress when you can just settle and move on? πŸ˜… It's crazy how some people can take things out of context and make a big deal about it. I think Sydney Sweeney's ad campaign was just a bit too extra, tbh πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. But hey, Lizzo handled herself like the queen she is πŸ‘‘. And let's be real, who doesn't love a good Porsche-washing TikTok video? πŸ˜‚ The fact that GRC Trust couldn't make it work out without getting all lawyer-y and stuff just shows how ridiculous this whole thing was πŸ™„. Anyway, can we please just talk about Lizzo's actual music now? She's still slaying the game! πŸ’–

Ugh I'm like so relieved that this lawsuit is finally settled but at the same time I'm still salty about how it all went down 🀯 Lizzo has been dragged through the mud for that TikTok post and now she's had to fight for her creative freedom. It's just wild how some people can take a song that's literally just about confidence and turn it into some kind of conspiracy theory πŸ’β€β™€οΈ And can we talk about Sydney Sweeney's ad campaign? Like I get why some people were triggered by it but come on, let's not forget that Lizzo is the one who was basically forced to address this issue because of a lawsuit 🚫 The fact that GRC Trust tried to sue her over something as ridiculous as this makes me so angry 😀 But I guess sometimes you just have to swallow your pride and move on. I mean, at least she's moving forward with her music now 🎡 And can we just say that Lizzo's "I'm Goin' in Till October" song is actually kinda catchy? 🎢

I don't know how fast music copyright laws move anymore 🀯... it feels like just yesterday I was listening to Lizzo's "Good as Hell" and now she's settling another lawsuit over some song that supposedly copied someone else's beat. It's wild to think that something that started on TikTok in 2018 is still making waves years later.

And can we talk about how crazy it is that Sydney Sweeney's jeans ad campaign was so scrutinized? I mean, I'm all for body positivity and challenging beauty standards, but come on... it just feels like everyone's trying to stir up drama these days. Anyway, glad Lizzo got this settled without having to take it all the way to court πŸ’Ό.

I do wish they'd release more of that unreleased song from 2018, though 🎡... I've been listening to "Truth Hurts" nonstop since that lawsuit was settled last year, and now I'm kinda curious what else Lizzo had cooking in the vaults πŸ€”.

idk about this... i mean, if lizzo did indeed settle out of court then that's cool, but at the same time, grc trust should've taken it to trial and exposed the truth. on the other hand, maybe lizzo really messed up with that song and she deserved to get sued. wait, no, lizzo is an artist and artists deserve to make mistakes... but if she was gonna use someone elses work without permission then she's gotta face the consequences... ugh, i'm so confused πŸ˜’

omg can u believe how much drama lizzo went through over that song 🀯 like she literally had to settle a lawsuit over something that was meant as a joke lol! i mean idk what's more wild is that she did end up releasing an extended ep but the disputed song still didn't make it in 🎡. anyway gotta give her props for being super proactive and owning up to making a mistake - that takes a big person πŸ’β€β™€οΈ. u feel like sometimes we get too caught up in online drama & forget about the human side of things? anyway lets just move on & celebrate lizzo's win πŸ˜ŠπŸŽ‰
