Magic wears off in ‘Wicked: For Good’ - Detroit Metro Times

'Wicked: For Good', the long-awaited sequel to the hit musical, has finally landed in theaters. Unfortunately, this installment fails to live up to its predecessor's magic. Director Jon M. Chu attempts to subvert the classic tale of The Wizard of Oz by adding a dark edge, but ultimately falls flat.

The film picks up where the last one left off, with Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) taking on the role of the Wicked Witch of the West after the Wizard's demise. However, instead of delving deeper into her character, we're given a watered-down version of the story. The plot is predictable and lacks any real tension or conflict.

The musical numbers are forgettable, with songs like "No Place Like Home" feeling like rehashed versions of their original counterparts. The film's message about resistance against fascist regimes is admirable, but it's delivered in a shallow and heavy-handed manner that feels more like a marketing gimmick than a genuine attempt to tackle the issue.

The biggest problem with 'Wicked: For Good' lies in its inability to live up to the standard set by the first film. The pacing is rushed, and many of the dramatic moments feel contrived and lacking in emotional resonance. The film's attempt to add depth and complexity to the story falls flat, resulting in a shallow and unsatisfying viewing experience.

Despite the talented cast, including Ariana Grande as Galinda, 'Wicked: For Good' fails to deliver on its promise of an epic musical adventure. With a runtime that clocks in at over two hours, it's clear that this film is more interested in padding out its runtime than delivering a genuine story.

🤕 ugh, another movie that can't even top the original 🎬 just watched Wicked: For Good and I'm still trying to pick my jaw up from the floor 😴 it's like they took every good thing about Oz and squished it into a soggy mess 🤯 the plot is super predictable and the music is straight out of a bad musical theatre playlist 🎵 Cynthia Erivo is wasted in this role, I feel for her 😔 and don't even get me started on how rushed the pacing was 🕰️ 2 hours just feels like a drag now 💤 I mean, I loved the first Wicked film to bits but this sequel can't even begin to compete 🤷‍♀️

I just saw Wicked: For Good and I'm still trying to process how it didn't live up to the original 🤔. As a parent, I love watching classic stories with my kids, but this one felt like it lost its way mid-way through. The music was forgettable and the story just didn't have that magic ✨. I get what they were going for with adding a dark edge, but it just felt forced and didn't really add anything new to the table 🤷‍♀️. And with Ariana Grande as Galinda, you'd think it would be a fun twist, but she was actually kinda miscast 😐. My little one was really disappointed too, which made me sad 😔. Maybe they just set the bar too high with the first film? 🎬

I'm so disappointed with Wicked: For Good 🤕🎭 I mean, I love the original Oz story and was super stoked for this sequel but sadly it just doesn't hit the mark. The first one had such a great balance of magic and drama, I think they lost that in trying to make it darker and edgier. And omg, Ariana Grande as Galinda is just so confusing 😂 - I get why they cast her but it's like she's not really playing the role. The message about resistance against fascist regimes is super important but it feels like an afterthought here. I wish they'd dug deeper into Elphaba's character, you know? She's such a fascinating and complex person 🤓. Overall just felt like a shallow cash-grab to me 😐

I'm underwhelmed by the sequel to Wicked 🤔. I think they missed an opportunity to truly subvert the original narrative and explore the complexities of Elphaba's character. The addition of a dark edge feels like a gimmick, rather than a thoughtful consideration of the story's themes 🎭. The pacing is rushed and the plot feels predictable, making it hard for me to invest in the characters' journeys 💔. I also think they should've taken more risks with the musical numbers – instead, we get watered-down versions of the originals 🎵. Overall, I'd say 'Wicked: For Good' fails to live up to its predecessor's magic and feels like a shallow attempt to cash in on the original's success 📚

omg u gotta see the first one! wicked 1 was straight fire 🤯 and now they just tried to shoe-horn in some 'fascist regimes' vibes into this 2nd one and it feels so forced 🙄 like they were trying too hard to be edgy. and dont even get me started on cynthia erivo, she's a total talent but elphaba in this movie was just meh 🤷‍♀️ i mean what happened to the complexity of the story? it felt like they just phoned it in 📞

Ugh, I'm so over the rushed pacing in 'Wicked: For Good' 🙄👎 It feels like they're trying to cram as much filler into those two hours as possible, taking away from what little substance is actually there 😐. And don't even get me started on how predictable the plot is - it's like they took every exciting moment from the first film and just phoned it in 📺💔 The cast is talented, I'll give them that, but Ariana Grande as Galinda? More like a random pop star stuck in a cheesy musical role 🤣. Overall, 'Wicked: For Good' feels like a watered-down sequel that's more concerned with checking off boxes than actually telling a compelling story 📝👎

ugh I was so hyped for this one 🤔... I mean who doesn't love a good musical? but unfortunately it felt like they took all the magic away 😔. I get what they were trying to do with the dark edge, but honestly it just didn't work for me. I loved Cynthia Erivo in the first one though! and Ariana Grande was supposed to be so iconic 🤷‍♀️... maybe next time they'll nail it?
