Man who threw boy off Tate Modern balcony sentenced for attacking nurses

A British court has handed down a 16-week prison sentence to Jonty Bravery, a 24-year-old man with autism, for assaulting two nurses at Broadmoor hospital. The sentence will run concurrently with his existing 15-year minimum term for throwing a six-year-old boy off the Tate Modern's balcony in 2019.

Bravery was found guilty of two counts of assault after kicking one nurse, Linda McKinlay, in the thigh and clawing at the face of another, Kate Mastalerz. The victims had been trying to prevent Bravery from climbing a ledge when he launched his attack, which left both nurses with severe injuries.

The incident highlights concerns about the safety of patients with autism who are living in high-security psychiatric hospitals such as Broadmoor. In 2020, Bravery was given an initial 14-week jail sentence for attacking hospital staff after biting one colleague and pulling another's hair.

Bravery had initially been sentenced to life with a minimum term of 15 years for throwing the French boy from the Tate Modern's balcony, but his subsequent conviction for assaulting the nurses has reduced that sentence. Despite refusing to appear at court via video link, Bravery remains under supervision by three staff members and is being held at Broadmoor hospital.

I feel so bad for those nurses πŸ€•πŸ’”! They were just trying to help this guy who needs extra support, you know? But the system can be really tough on people with autism πŸ€–πŸ‘€. I mean, 16 weeks in prison is still a long time ⏰... 24 years old and already dealing with so much stress & anxiety 😩. We need to make sure we're supporting these patients in ways that work for them, not just punishing them 🚫πŸ’ͺ. Can't wait for some changes in the way we care for people with autism πŸ’•πŸŒˆ

Man this is just so sad... I mean I know we need safety measures in place, but 16 weeks feels like a harsh punishment to me πŸ€• especially considering the guy's got autism. In my day, if someone was having a meltdown and hurt someone, we wouldn't send them to prison for it πŸ˜”. We'd try to help 'em work through their issues or get 'em some proper therapy.

And can you imagine being a nurse at Broadmoor? It must be super stressful already with all these patients, and then this guy comes atcha out of nowhere... I feel bad for the nurses involved. And what really gets me is that he's only 24 – still got his whole life ahead of him πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. Maybe they should've taken a more holistic approach to dealin' with autism in hospitals?

🀯 I'm so worried about people like Jonty Bravery who are living with autism and have serious issues with managing their emotions. It's clear that he needs extra support and understanding from the system, but instead he's facing harsh punishments in a court of law πŸš”.

I think it's time for us to rethink how we support people with autism in our hospitals and communities. We need more trained staff and better facilities to help them cope with their feelings and behaviors 🀝. It's not about being "bad" or "aggressive", it's about needing help and understanding πŸ˜”.

It's also concerning that Jonty was sentenced to an extra 16 weeks in prison for this latest incident, on top of his existing 15-year minimum term πŸ’₯. I hope he gets the support he needs and can eventually be released from Broadmoor and start his journey towards recovery 🌞.

😱🀯 This is so unfair πŸ€•! Autistic people are already 🚫 stigmatized enough in society 🌎. Throwing a kid off the Tate Modern's balcony was bad enough 😨, but now he's getting πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ more time for kicking some nurses πŸ‘©β€βš•οΈ? That's just not right πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ! We need to be more understanding and inclusive 🌈 for people with autism, especially when it comes to mental health support πŸ’Š. Broadmoor hospital should be a safe space for all patients πŸ₯, regardless of their abilities πŸ€–. This is just another example of how we're failing our most vulnerable citizens πŸ˜”.

πŸ€” I don't think 16 weeks is enough for someone with autism who's already got a history of violent outbursts... what were the nurses supposed to do? Try to read minds or anticipate attacks before they happen? πŸš‘ Patients with autism are often misunderstood and struggle with sensory overload, it's like throwing them into a lion's den without considering their needs. πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ Shouldn't we be focusing on rehabilitation and support rather than harsh punishment?

πŸ€”πŸš¨πŸ’” this sentence seems way too harsh for someone with autism πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ like jonty bravery... 16 weeks isnt even a big deal to him, its still gonna be super hard 4 him @ Broadmoor πŸ‘©β€βš•οΈ hospital... whats the plan 2 make sure he gets the help & meds he needs? πŸ€πŸ’Š

omg u guys i feel like jonty bravery got a pretty harsh sentence πŸ€• he's got autism and needs extra support, but the court just saw it as an attack on the nurses πŸ˜” the fact that he was trying to climb a ledge in the first place tells me something went wrong in his life, maybe he needed help instead of being locked up for 15 years straight 🚫 he's already been through so much and now he's gonna be behind bars for another 16 weeks... it just seems like the system is failing people with autism 🀝 broadmoor hospital should really look into providing more support and resources for their patients, not just locking them up πŸ’Έ

I'm worried about our healthcare system. Jonty Bravery's case is a real wake-up call πŸš¨πŸ’”. A 16-week prison sentence for two nurses who were just trying to protect themselves from him? It doesn't seem like a fair punishment, considering his autism and the fact that he was already serving a 15-year sentence for a separate incident πŸ˜•.

We need to talk about the support systems in place for patients with autism. Are they getting the help they need? Is it possible that Bravery's behavior is a result of his condition being misunderstood or neglected? πŸ€” I'm not saying he's innocent, but we can't just lock him up and throw away the key without considering the complexities of his situation.

We should be focusing on finding solutions that address the root causes of his behavior rather than just punishing him further. That way, we can ensure that no one else suffers like those two nurses did 😒.

I'm so over this forum anyway lol πŸ˜’. But seriously, can we talk about what's going on with Jonty Bravery? I mean, 16 weeks for assaulting two nurses? That seems way too harsh, especially considering he has autism and was already given a minimum 15-year sentence for something else. 🀯 It just highlights how complex these cases are and how hard it is to support people like him.

And what's with the lack of understanding about autism in our society? These high-security hospitals should be providing better care, not putting patients at risk of being assaulted by their own caregivers. πŸ’” I know we're supposed to be having this conversation on a forum, but can't we just talk about it somewhere else? This place is so cluttered and hard to navigate... 😩

I'm low-key shocked about this guy Jonty Bravery getting 16 weeks in prison 🀯🚨 for attacking nurses πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. I mean, I get it, he's got autism and all, but throwing a kid from the Tate Modern was straight up brutal 😱. And now he gets to go on trial again for assaulting some nurses? That just seems like so much punishment πŸ’”.

I'm trying to understand why they gave him 16 weeks though... I guess it's 'cause of the new assault charges πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. But honestly, I think he should be getting even more time πŸ˜•. Broadmoor hospital is already a pretty scary place for anyone who needs help, and now patients with autism might be at higher risk of being harmed πŸ’₯.

It's just crazy that some people think they can take advantage of the system like this 🀯. I'm all about giving people with autism a chance to thrive 🌟, but you gotta protect those nurses too 😩.

πŸ˜• This case is a poignant reminder of the complex challenges faced by individuals with autism in high-pressure environments like psychiatric hospitals. The fact that Jonty Bravery's aggressive outburst towards two nurses has led to a 16-week prison sentence, which will concurrently run alongside his existing 15-year minimum term, raises concerns about the intersectionality of autism and mental health.

The UK court system should consider implementing more nuanced assessments of individuals with autism, taking into account the neurodiverse individual's unique cognitive and behavioral profiles. Moreover, hospitals must prioritize staff training on autism awareness, de-escalation techniques, and crisis management to minimize such incidents in the future 🀝.

OMG u no wut's goin on here 🀯! So like this guy Jonty Bravery is 24 yrs old & has autism, but he still manages 2 get sent 2 prison 4 like... 2 incidents? 🚫 First, he threw a kid off a balcony @ the Tate Modern in 2019, which was supposed 2 b life with min term of 15 yrs. But now, cuz he got convicted 4 assaulting nurses at Broadmoor, his sentence got reduced 2 just 16 wks! 😩 Like, what's up w/ that? πŸ€”

And it's not like he didn't get warned before... in 2020, he was given an initial 14-wk jail sentence 4 attacking hospital staff. So now, he's gettin 16 wks 4 assaulting nurses, but still only doin a total of 30 yrs in prison? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ Like, that don't seem right 2 me...

πŸ€” gotta wonder how a 16-week sentence for assault is gonna make a difference when it's part of a larger 15-year min term... feel like they're just ticking down the clock 😐

Ugh, another one of these cases just makes me wanna facepalm πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. I mean, 16 weeks for kicking some nurses? That's it? And to think he was already serving a 15-year sentence for throwing a kid off a balcony... like, what even is that?! 🀯 The system needs to get its act together, you know? And poor Linda and Kate, left with severe injuries because of his "actions". πŸ€• At least the court made sure he's still getting some time behind bars, but I guess it's not enough since they had to reduce his sentence again. Sigh... autistic patients deserve better support than that πŸ˜”.

I dont think 16 weeks in prison is enough for what he did πŸ€• those nurses were trying to protect themselves and his behavior was completely unacceptable! autistic ppl deserve support and understanding not punishment... broadmoor hospital needs to get their act together and provide better care for people like jonty, who clearly need extra help and accomodations. its not about being "tough on crime" its about giving people with autism the resources they need to thrive 🀝

I'm so worried about these patients with autism in hospitals... it's just not fair πŸ€• They need extra care and understanding, but sometimes they get misunderstood or even attacked themselves 😱 16 weeks in prison for two nurses? That's too much, if you ask me πŸ™„ It's like the system is failing them. And to make matters worse, he was already on life sentence for another incident... what's going on here? πŸ’” The Tate Modern incident was just so shocking, I remember watching it and thinking 'how could someone do that' 😲 My heart goes out to that little boy who almost fell to his death 🀯

Ugh, I'm so worried about those poor nurses 😞...I mean, I know it's not ideal for a guy with autism to be in a situation like that, but 16 weeks feels way too harsh imo πŸ€”. I remember when I was at school, we had a classmate who had Asperger's and he'd get really overwhelmed sometimes. We tried to help him out as much as we could, you know? We didn't want to see him in that situation either πŸ˜•.

And what's with the system, though? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ It feels like they're throwing the book at this guy while not considering his autism at all πŸ“š. I'm no expert, but isn't there supposed to be more support for people on the spectrum? 🀝

Anyway, I just hope those nurses are doing okay after what happened πŸ’•...and that Jonty gets some proper help instead of just being locked up again πŸ˜”.

πŸ€” this whole thing is just so messed up. like, bravery's got autism and he attacks these two nurses who are trying to protect him... it's a lose-lose situation right? 🚫 the system's failing its own people with special needs πŸ€•. and 16 weeks in prison for that? come on... that's not punishment, that's just more stress 🀯. shouldn't he be getting help instead of jail time? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

πŸ€• gotta wonder how much of this can be laid on autism? i mean, 24 and already getting serious time for some pretty messed up stuff... but then again, throwing a kid off a balcony? that's just sickening 🚫 doesn't make it any better when u got nurses gettin beat up cuz he can't control himself πŸ’” what's the system doin' to prevent this in the first place? more support, maybe? 🀝 broadmoor hospital is like the last place u wanna send someone with autism... πŸ™„ and now they're worried about safety? 🚨 should be worried about how we treat these people when they need help most πŸ˜”
