Mayor Johnson, Gov. Pritzker push back on Trump threat to halt funding for Chicago, other sanctuary cities

US President Donald Trump has issued another threat to halt funding for cities like Chicago that are deemed sanctuary cities, sparking outrage among local leaders.

In remarks at the Detroit Economic Club, Trump stated that starting February 1st, his administration will no longer make payments to cities or states with sanctuary policies in place. He claimed this move is necessary due to these cities' alleged failure to protect American citizens and instead protect "criminals" who entered the country without permission.

Chicago, along with other major cities such as New York City and Los Angeles, has implemented sanctuary policies that limit cooperation with federal immigration enforcement and offer greater protections for undocumented immigrants. This stance puts Chicago at odds with Trump's administration, which has a history of punishing sanctuary cities.

Mayor Brandon Johnson, who has been vocal in his opposition to the Trump administration's immigration enforcement policies, denounced the decision as "blatantly unconstitutional and immoral." He vowed that the city will be relentless in its pursuit of the funds withheld by the Trump administration.

Governor JB Pritzker echoed Johnson's sentiments, stating that American taxpayers should not be treated like pawns. If Trump continues to threaten to withhold funds from Illinois, Pritzker said his administration is prepared to take legal action to protect their people's interests.

Chicagoans contribute billions of dollars in federal taxes yet are facing the possibility of having these funds withheld due to Trump's actions. The city's mayor pointed out that this move would be unfair and stressed that Chicago will not back down from a fight.

In response to the threats, local leaders have hinted at filing another lawsuit against the administration, which they believe is an overreach of executive power. As tensions between the Trump administration and sanctuary cities escalate, it remains to be seen how these issues will be resolved in the courts.

Ugh, I'm getting so frustrated with this whole sanctuary city thing πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ! Like, can't we just have a fair shot at being compassionate leaders? I don't think withholding funding from cities that offer help to undocumented immigrants is the way to go. It's just gonna create more problems and hurt the people who need it most πŸ’Έ. And what's with all these lawsuits? Can't they just talk things out instead of going to court? 🀝 I'm not sure what's gonna happen next, but I do know that Chicagoans are gonna fight for their rights and won't back down without a fuss πŸ’ͺ.

omg what a load of BS dont they get that everyone pays taxes regardless of where u live cant just pick and choose who gets funding like that trump thinks he's above the law but newsflash dude ur not special

This is getting out of hand πŸ™„... Like what's next? Withholding funding from schools or hospitals because a city has some kind of policy against cooperating with ICE? It's not like they're actively harboring fugitives, just giving those living here without papers a break.

I get that Trump wants to enforce immigration laws, but this is like playing politics with people's lives. The mayor and governor are standing up for their constituents, even if it means going toe-to-toe with the feds. I'm all for local control and states' rights – especially when it comes to social services.

But think about it... if you take away funding from a city like Chicago, where millions of people contribute billions in federal taxes (but can't really leave because they're undocumented), that's just unfair. The Trump admin is essentially saying, "Hey, we don't trust you to do the right thing." That's not exactly conducive to building trust πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ...

πŸ€• I'm gettin' so tired of this back-and-forth, Trump's always playin' hardball with cities like Chicago. It's not fair that they're tryin' to withhold funds 'cause of sanctuary policies. The city's already payin' their share of taxes, it's not like they're freeloadin'. And Mayor Johnson and Governor Pritzker are totally right, this move is kinda unconstitutional. I mean, who gets to decide what cities can and can't cooperate with the feds? It's just another example of Trump tryin' to strong-arm cities into doin' his dirty work for him.

And you know what really grinds my gears? The fact that these cities are still takin' in undocumented immigrants who might actually be victims of circumstance. I get that there's a border, but we can't just kick people out willy-nilly. We gotta have some compassion and understanding. This whole thing is just so... divisive πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

omg you guys i cant even right now i live in chicago and idk what we gonna do if trump really follows thru on this...my lil bro got a buddy who works at a shelter and he's always talking about his fam being deported and stuff it would just be so unfair to take away our citys funding over that...the thing is though mayor brandon johnson is literally the best like he's been fighting for us sanctuary cities forever and i'm so proud of him

Ugh, this guy's gone wild 😑! Sanctuary cities are just trying to protect people who don't deserve to be targeted like that, you feel? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ Trump's all about punishing cities for not playing ball with his immigration policies, but newsflash: that's not how it works, dude! 🚫 Chicagoans pay just as much in federal taxes as anyone else, so why should they get screwed over by this? πŸ’Έ It's like he's trying to hold their hands and say "don't come to our city" πŸšͺ. Meanwhile, the cities are gonna keep fighting for what's right and not back down from a fight πŸ”₯. I got no love for Trump on this one πŸ˜’

πŸ€” this is so messed up 🚫😑 trump is being super petty πŸ’β€β™€οΈ and targeting cities that are trying to be kind to ppl 🌎 who came here seeking a better life 🏠 chicago and other cities r just trying to create a safer community πŸ•ŠοΈ but trumps administration thinks it's all about enforcement πŸ’ͺ not about people πŸ’”

πŸ“ gotta say, this is some super unconstitutional 🚫 stuff going on πŸ‘€ and it's only gonna fuel more drama πŸ’₯ mayor johnson and governor pritzker r speaking truth to power πŸ’― and we should be proud of them πŸ™Œ

πŸ’Έ but let's get real, this is all about the benjamins πŸ€‘ and trumps administration is just trying to strong-arm cities into doing what they want 🚫 it's not gonna work 😜 chicagoans are smart enough to see through this πŸ€“ and we'll keep fighting for our rights πŸ’ͺ

Ugh 🀯, this is getting outta hand! The US government can't just threaten to withhold funding from cities that are trying to protect people's rights πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. It's like they're saying that anyone who doesn't follow their rules automatically loses access to public services πŸ’Έ. Newsflash: that's not how democracy works 🀝. Chicago, NY, and LA aren't sanctuary cities because they want to be; it's because some people deserve better treatment than others 🌎. If the city has to take legal action, I say let them πŸ’ͺ! The Trump administration needs to stop playing politics with people's lives πŸ™„ #JusticeForChicago #SanctuaryCitiesMatter #FundingShouldntBeAPoliticalIssue

🀯 This is so not cool πŸ˜’. I mean, come on @realDonaldTrump! Can't you just chill for one sec? πŸ™„ Threatening to withhold funding from cities that are just trying to keep their communities safe is basically bullying 🚫. Chicagoans pay taxes too, they shouldn't be treated like second-class citizens πŸ‘Ž. And honestly, what's with the whole "protecting criminals" vibe? πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ That's not even a thing! We need to work together as a country, not tear each other apart πŸ’”. The fact that Mayor Johnson and Governor Pritzker are standing up for their city is super inspiring πŸ’ͺ. Maybe it's time for the administration to listen to reason and find a way to work with these cities instead of pitting them against each other 🀝 #SanctuaryCityRights #FairnessForAll #ProtectImmigrantCommunities

πŸ€” I'm so worried about Chicago! They're not just talking about taking away funding, but also threatening the livelihoods of people who live there. It's like they're trying to break the city's spirit. You know, as someone who's retired and lived through a lot, I can tell you that this kind of thing always ends in court. And if it does, I hope those lawyers are ready for a long battle! πŸ’Ό As a retiree, I'm also thinking about my own taxes, and how much of it goes to funding cities like Chicago. It's not fair that they'd take that away just because of politics πŸ€‘

πŸ˜’ This is getting out of hand! What's next? Trump threatening to cut off funding for schools that don't have metal detectors or police officers on campus because they're not 'safe enough'? It's just another example of him being a bully and trying to strong-arm cities into doing his bidding. I mean, who are these people in the administration who think this is a good idea? It's basically extortion! πŸ€‘

can you imagine a city like chicago where people from all over the world come together to live and contribute? now trump's saying they'll cut off funding just 'cause they don't wanna cooperate with immigration enforcement... that's some crazy stuff 🀯😑. mayor johnson is totally right, it's not fair to penalize cities for trying to protect ppl who are already here and paying taxes πŸ€‘πŸ‘. what's next? taking away healthcare or education funding? 😬 this is just another example of trump's divisive tactics... anyway, i'm low-key hyped that chicagoans are ready to fight back πŸ’ͺπŸ’•

🀬 This is so unfair! Like, Chicago pays billions in taxes but Trump's all like "oh you're a sanctuary city, I'm gonna take your money". It's not right! πŸ€‘ He's basically threatening to withhold funds from cities that are trying to be more welcoming and inclusive. And what's with the labels of "criminals" being thrown around? It's just so... inflammatory πŸ”₯. The fact that Trump is trying to strong-arm these cities into cooperating with his immigration policies is a huge overreach of executive power 🚫. Chicago is gonna stand its ground and fight this in court, I love it! πŸ’ͺ
