Mayor Mamdani picks transit wonk as NYC's chief taxi regulator

Mayor Zohran Mamdani has tapped seasoned transit expert Midori Valdivia to head the Taxi and Limousine Commission, tasked with regulating New York City's vast fleet of cabs and ride-hailing vehicles.

Valdivia, who previously worked as an analyst for the Port Authority, spent six years advising on transportation issues before becoming a deputy commissioner of finance at the TLC in 2015. Her most recent stint was serving on the MTA board, where she built a reputation as a leading advocate for transportation policy reform.

As chair of the TLC, Valdivia would oversee policies governing over 84,000 Uber and Lyft vehicles, as well as the city's struggling yellow taxi industry. Speaking at a news conference yesterday, Mamdani hailed Valdivia as "the woman to my left" who shares his commitment to improving transportation for working people.

Valdivia's appointment is pending City Council approval, but her background suggests she is well-equipped to tackle the complex issues facing New York City's taxi industry. Transportation, she said, is "our lifeline," and it's essential that policies prioritize the needs of both drivers and riders.

The TLC has recently made strides in protecting workers' rights, including imposing new rules for Uber and Lyft app drivers and codifying protections against companies locking workers out of the apps. Valdivia's appointment comes at a time when yellow taxi medallion owners are still struggling with debt and foreclosure, following years of deregulation under previous administrations.

Mamdani's nomination is part of his broader effort to build a coalition of support among taxi drivers and medallion owners. In 2021, he formed an alliance with many drivers and joined a hunger strike outside City Hall in protest of debt relief for medallion owners. While progress has been made, many drivers still face foreclosure and financial hardship.

Valdivia's leadership will be crucial in shaping the future of New York City's transportation landscape, as she navigates complex policy issues and works to protect the interests of all stakeholders involved.

I THINK MIDORI VALDIVIA IS THE PERFECT PERSON FOR THE JOB!! SHE'S GOT THE EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE TO TACKLE THOSE COMPLEX ISSUES IN NEW YORK CITY'S TAXI INDUSTRY! IT'S ABOUT TIME WE SEE SOME REAL CHANGE HAPPENING πŸ˜ŠπŸš• I MEAN, IT'S NOT EASY TO REGULATE OVER 84,000 UBER AND LYFT VEHICLES, BUT I KNOW SHE'S UP FOR THE CHALLENGE! πŸ‘ LET'S HOPE SHE CAN HELP THOSE YELLOW TAXI DRIVERS OUT OF DEBT AND FORECLOSURE TOO! πŸ’ΈπŸš—

Umm, I dont think this is a good idea at all πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ... Like, Midori Valdivia sounds super qualified and all, but hasnt New York City's taxi industry been struggling for years? And now theyre making her head of the TLC? That just seems like more of the same problem-solving, you know? I mean, whats to say that she wont just make things worse for medallion owners or Uber/Lyft drivers? And what about the environmental impact of all these ride-hailing vehicles? We should be focusing on getting more people out of cars, not encouraging them to drive around more. Not saying she's a bad person or anything, but maybe we need someone with a totally different perspective to shake things up?

I think this is a great move for the city πŸ€”. What it shows us is that having someone with experience and expertise lead the way can make a big difference in navigating complex problems. It's like when you're trying to solve a puzzle, you need someone who has all the pieces and knows how they fit together πŸ”. Midori Valdivia seems like exactly that person - she's got the background and the passion to make a real impact. And I love that Mayor Mamdani is acknowledging her strengths and values their partnership πŸ’•. It just goes to show that even in the midst of tough challenges, we can find ways to work together and come out stronger on the other side 🌈.

πŸ€” think this is gonna be a tough job for her lol 84k drivers & medallion owners gotta be hard to please πŸ€‘ but i guess she's got the right background to tackle it, been around the block a few times πŸ’Ό and if mamdani says she's the woman to his left, that means he believes in her πŸ‘Š maybe it'll finally give drivers some relief from those debt issues 😬

I'm not sure I see what the fuss is about... πŸ€” Another expert comes on board to regulate the taxi industry? It's like they're trying to reinvent the wheel. What's next, a new study to prove that ride-hailing companies are bad for the city? πŸš—πŸ’¨ Look, I get it, some drivers need help paying their medallion debts, but can't we just have an open and honest conversation about the whole thing? The TLC already has rules in place to protect workers' rights... what's the point of changing leaders if everything stays the same?

πŸš—πŸ‘ think midori valdivia is exactly what nyc needs right now, been following her work for years and she's got a solid track record on transportation policy reform πŸ“ˆ she's not afraid to speak truth to power and advocate for workers' rights, which is more than can be said for some of the others involved in this mess πŸ™„ it's about time someone with her expertise and passion gets behind the wheel πŸ‘

I think it's a good move by Mayor Mamdani to appoint Midori Valdivia as the head of the Taxi and Limousine Commission 🀝. She seems like someone who understands both sides of the issue - drivers and riders need each other, you know? It's not just about making money for Uber or Lyft, it's about getting people from point A to point B safely and efficiently πŸš—. And I think her experience on the MTA board will be super helpful in navigating all the complex policies and regulations involved. Plus, it's a step towards helping out our struggling yellow taxi drivers who've been through some tough times 🌟. Let's see how she does!

I gotta say, Midori Valdivia seems like a total game changer for NYC's taxi industry πŸš—πŸ’‘. She's got this extensive background in transportation policy reform and a proven track record of fighting for workers' rights, which is super crucial right now. I mean, those yellow taxi medallion owners are still reeling from deregulation and it's a ticking time bomb if they don't get some debt relief ASAP ⏰. Valdivia's got the chops to tackle these complex issues and bring about real change, so fingers crossed she gets that City Council approval 🀞.

just hope midori valdivia can really make a change for those yellow taxi drivers who are struggling with debt 🀞... it's crazy that medallion owners are still dealing with foreclosure after years of deregulation... valdivia seems like she gets it tho, prioritizing both driver and rider needs is key πŸ’š her experience on the mta board was super valuable, i'm curious to see how she'll tackle the complex issues facing nyc's taxi industry πŸ—ΊοΈ

idk why they need someone new at the TLC lol πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ but midori valdivia seems legit 😊. its about time we get someone who actually understands the needs of both drivers & riders, y'know? πŸš—πŸ’¨ like transportation is literally the lifeline of this city and its not being taken care of properly πŸ’”. Valdivia's got the right vibe going on with her advocacy for policy reform πŸ™Œ and protecting workers' rights πŸ‘ so hopefully she can make some real changes πŸ”₯. Medallion owners have been struggling for ages πŸ€‘ and it's all because of deregulation, so fingers crossed she'll help sort that out πŸ’ͺ.

"Yooo, can't wait to see what this woman does! She sounds super passionate about making transport more fair for everyone πŸš—πŸ’Ό. The TLC needs a shake-up and I'm glad Mamdani is bringing in someone with real expertise. Like, 84k+ Uber/Lyft vehicles? That's wild! Valdivia's all about prioritizing workers' rights too, which is long overdue. Medallion owners are still struggling with debt? That's some dark stuff πŸ€‘. Hope she brings some sunshine to the TLC and gets those medallions paid off ASAP πŸ’–"

πŸš—πŸ’¨ I think it's awesome that Midori Valdivia is taking on this role! She seems super knowledgeable about transportation policies and has a clear vision for the future. I'm curious to see how she'll balance the needs of Uber/lyft drivers, medallion owners, and riders in NYC πŸ€”. It's also dope that Mayor Mamdani is trying to build a coalition with taxi drivers – they deserve better than being stuck with debt and foreclosure 😩. Fingers crossed Valdivia can bring some much-needed change to the TLC and make NYC's transportation system more equitable πŸ‘.

I'm not sure how this is gonna play out but Midori Valdivia seems like a solid pick for TLC chair πŸ€”. The city's got some major transportation problems and it'll be interesting to see if she can make some real progress on the yellow taxi industry and medallion debt crisis πŸ’Έ. I've seen some of her work with the MTA and she seems like someone who actually listens to people's concerns, which is more than I can say for some of the other officials πŸ™. Hopefully she can build on the progress made so far at TLC, especially when it comes to protecting workers' rights πŸ‘.

omg u gotta think about this - midori valdivia is literally the best person for the job πŸ™Œ! i mean, 6 yrs advising on transport issues? that's some serious expertise right there πŸ’‘ plus she's been a leader in transportation policy reform, so we can trust her to make smart decisions 🀝 now, let's hope city council gives her the thumbs up and supports our mayor mamdani's efforts to build a coalition of support among taxi drivers & medallion owners πŸ™ this is all about creating a safe & fair ride for everyone in the city πŸš—πŸ’¨

I think it's pretty cool that Mayor Mamdani is shakin' things up at the TLC πŸ€”. Midori Valdivia seems like a solid choice, especially with her background in transportation policy reform πŸš—. I'm curious to see how she'll balance out the interests of all the stakeholders - from ride-hailing drivers to medallion owners and even yellow taxi operators πŸ’Ό.

I mean, it's clear that there's still a lot of work to be done to address the debt crisis affecting medallion owners πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. But with Valdivia at the helm, I think we might see some real progress πŸ”œ. And let's not forget about the TLC's efforts to protect workers' rights - that's definitely a step in the right direction πŸ‘.

Overall, I'm optimistic about what this new appointment means for New York City's transportation landscape πŸŒ†. Bring on the changes and let's hope they make a real difference in people's lives 😊

omg i think midori valdivia is a total game changer 🀩 idk what all the drama is about w/ the taxi industry like let's support our workers & drivers πŸ€‘ mamdani's tryna build coalitions & stuff so im good w/ that πŸ’― valdivia seems super experienced & knows her way around transportation policy reform πŸš‚πŸ’¨ i mean yeah the city council needs to approve it but i think she's got this πŸ’ͺ

I'm so down on this appointment πŸ˜’. Like, what's next? Gonna bring in some Uber rep to head the Port Authority too 🚧? Midori Valdivia sounds like just another politician who's never actually had to deal with the struggles of being a driver. I mean, she's worked with ride-hailing companies and now she's gonna be in charge of regulating them? That's just rich πŸ€‘. And what about the yellow taxi industry? Are we really gonna sacrifice those guys on the altar of progress? πŸš• I don't think so. The TLC needs someone who's actually got a pulse, you know? Not some suit-wearing, policy-spinning expert like Valdivia πŸ‘”.
