Megadeth: Megadeth review – conspiracy theories and combustible fingers on thrash metallers' curtain call

Megadeth is hanging up its guitars, and the end is nigh. Frontman Dave Mustaine announced last August that the thrash metal legends would be calling it quits with a final album and tour, which he likened to an existential crisis ("some say this is the end of times") and boldly claimed that they changed the world.

But what's behind this unexpected retirement? The answer lies in Mustaine's deteriorating health – arthritis and Dupuytren's contracture are crippling his guitar-playing days. Yet, just three months later, he revealed that the farewell tour wouldn't be an early retirement party; it would last "easily ... three to five years".

Megadeth's new music, aptly titled their 17th studio album, feels like a career recap – rather than a bold return to form. The opener Tipping Point stands out as a high-energy tribute to the thrash metal genre they pioneered. Yet, other tracks such as Made to Kill and Let There Be Shred demonstrate that despite some growing pains, Megadeth is still capable of creating compelling music.

Interestingly, I Don't Care displays punkish leanings reminiscent of their mid-to-late 90s style and even showcases some strong songwriting on "Puppet Parade", which should please fans of the band's melodic side.

However, not all tracks on this album are winners. Some sound musically unremarkable, like Obey the Call, with lyrics about ghostly puppetmasters controlling the world's evils that may not sit well with longtime fans. On The Final Note, Megadeth takes aim at both their devoted audience and potential haters – though it's a rather confusing and heavy-handed approach.

A surprising bonus track sees Megadeth take on Metallica's "Ride the Lightning", reworking the classic in an attempt to reclaim ownership over some of Metallica's material. Some may see this as an attempt to stir up old wounds, but Mustaine has been vocal about his past with Metallica for years.

In any case, this is Megadeth's swansong – and it's a fitting (if sometimes messy) conclusion to their storied career.

I think it's kinda weird that Dave Mustaine said the farewell tour would last 3-5 years but now he's saying they're gonna just hang up the guitars 🤯... I mean, I get why he wants to keep going since his health is bad, but still... It feels like a big contradiction.

I think what's fascinating about Megadeth's farewell tour is how the album's soundscapes reflect Mustaine's health struggles 🤕. On one hand, tracks like "Tipping Point" show that they can still channel their thrash metal roots with ease 💥. However, songs like "Obey the Call" feel somewhat generic and lack the nuance we've come to expect from them 🔊.

As for Mustaine's bold claim of changing the world 🌎, while it's admirable, I think a more introspective approach might have been warranted given his health issues 😔. The final track, reworking Metallica's "Ride the Lightning", feels like a bit of an unnecessary dig at their former bandmates 👊.

That being said, I do appreciate how Megadeth has managed to blend old and new on this album, especially with songs like "I Don't Care" showing some welcome punk influences 🤘. The music may not be perfect, but it's a fitting swan song for an iconic band that's left its mark on the metal genre 🎸💥

I'm so bummed to hear that Megadeth is hanging up its guitars! 🤘 I mean, they're one of the most iconic thrash metal bands out there and Dave Mustaine's legacy is cemented in music history. But at the same time, you can respect his decision to retire when his health isn't cooperating anymore. 3-5 years on farewell tour sounds like a solid plan tho... that's gonna be a wild ride! 🎟️ The new album feels a bit of a mixed bag to me - some tracks are pure fire 🔥 (like Tipping Point), while others feel a tad meh 😐. But hey, it's Megadeth we're talking about, you know they can still bring the heat! 🔥 And I'm curious to see how they tackle Metallica's "Ride the Lightning" - that's some bold moves right there!

I'm kinda bummed that Megadeth is hanging up its guitars 🤘, but at the same time I'm not shocked. Like, Dave Mustaine has been dealing with health issues for ages and it makes sense he'd want to slow down.

The new album feels like a nostalgia trip rather than a bold statement of intent - it's all about looking back on their legacy rather than pushing boundaries. But you can still hear the passion in tracks like Tipping Point, even if some of the other songs are kinda meh 🤷‍♂️.

I do love the punk influences on I Don't Care and Puppet Parade, that's definitely Megadeth at its best! And let's be real, they've been saying farewell for ages so it's hard to get worked up about it. The bonus track of reworking "Ride the Lightning" is a wild card - not sure if it's just an attempt to stir the pot or something, but it's definitely interesting.

I'm so bummed to hear that Megadeth is retiring 🤘... I mean, I know Dave Mustaine's gotta do what he's gotta do, but man, they've still got some epic tracks in 'em 😢. I think the album's a bit all over the place – like, "I Don't Care" is a rad throwback to their 90s vibes 🤟 and "Puppet Parade" is straight fire 🔥... but then you gotta wade through some meh stuff 🙄. And don't even get me started on that Metallica remix 😂... I'm all for them reclaiming ownership, but it feels like a bit of a slap in the face? Still, it's gonna be crazy to see 'em live one last time - they're legends, man!

I gotta say, the music world just lost a piece of its essence 🤘. It's not about Megadeth going out with a bang, but more about realizing when it's time to put down the guitar and let someone else take the stage. For Dave Mustaine, it's been an ongoing struggle with his health, and I think he's being honest about what that means for his band 🤕.

It's also a lesson in legacy vs. legacy-making. Sometimes, you gotta acknowledge what you've accomplished and move on, rather than trying to create new magic that might not be the same. Megadeth may not be releasing new music anymore, but their impact will keep on resonating for years to come 💥.

And lastly, it's a reminder that even when things are coming to an end, there's still beauty in the final notes 🎵. I think that's what Mustaine and the rest of Megadeth are trying to say with this farewell album – that they're not just saying goodbye, but sharing their story one last time 💭.

OMG u guys cant even imagine what its gonna be like after the great Dave Mustaine hangs up those guitars its like the end of an era 🤯 he might not be as spry but the music is still fire and I'm so down for that final swan song its got all the thrash, punk, and metal vibes u need plus a few surprises like that Metallica cover - cant say Im stoked about it being their "farewell" or anything tho

Ugh, I'm not surprised they're ending it here 🤔... mustaine's guitar playing days are numbered, no doubt about it 😬. The farewell tour is gonna be all the more sad now that we know it's just a ruse to make some cash 💸. And don't even get me started on this new album... feels like they're phoning it in at this point 📞. Some tracks are actually pretty good, I'll give 'em that 🎸, but others? Forget about it 😐. The whole thing just feels like a nostalgia trip for old fans who can't let go 🚫.

man, megadeth is really bringing the nostalgia vibes on this last album 🤘 they're like the older cousins of metal, all grey-haired and wise from decades of shredding 😂 but for real, dave mustaine's health issues are giving me some major sympathy vibes 🤕 i remember when i was a teenager and megadeth came out with "peace sells" and it was like this whole new world opened up for thrash metal fans 🌐 and now they're just getting ready to ride off into the sunset 🎸 like, what's next? will we get a farewell tour of their discography or something? that would be lit 🤩

I'm gonna say Megadeth will be back in 2 years with a brand new album that blows the farewell tour out of the water 🤯. I mean, who needs a break when you're on top? They'll just regroup, recharge, and come back stronger than ever. I don't buy into the "health issues" excuse at all - Dave Mustaine is still got it, and if he doesn't, they've got some talented youngbloods waiting in the wings to take over 🎸. This whole farewell tour thing is just a publicity stunt to get people talking before their comeback. And let's be real, that Metallica cover? A total nod to Mustaine's ego 😏.

idk why megadeths gotta be so nostalgic on their last album 🤔 they're literally reminiscing about the good ol' days like they're gonna put up a retirement booth at the farewell show 🏆 but seriously tho, some of these songs are fire 🔥 i mean who doesnt love a good "i don't care" anthem? 🤘 and kudos to them for attempting to take on metallica's classic track - it's def some next level production 🎧 that said, the lyrics on obey the call kinda fell flat for me 🤔 guess thats what happens when u gotta spell out every single plot twist in your story 📚

I gotta say, I'm kinda bummed that Megadeth is wrapping up its guitar-wielding ways... 🤘 but at the same time, I get why Dave Mustaine would wanna slow down with his health issues. It's like, 30+ years of touring and playing - that's some serious wear and tear on your body! 😩 Still, it's weird how he's gonna make this final tour last for three to five years... feels like a bit too long if you ask me 🤔.

I mean, the new album is alright, I guess. Some tracks are really strong, like Tipping Point and Puppet Parade... those are some old-school thrash vibes that'll get any Megadeth fan stoked! 🎸 But other songs feel kinda...meh? Like Obey the Call just doesn't bring anything new to the table. And The Final Note's message feels a bit too preachy for my taste 🙄.

But hey, I'm not gonna lie - the bonus track where they tackle Metallica's "Ride the Lightning" is some wild stuff... maybe it's just me, but it feels like Megadeth trying to reclaim some bragging rights? 😏 Either way, this swansong album's a fitting one - even if it doesn't entirely live up to the legend of Megadeth 🙅‍♂️.

I'm not really sad about megadeths retirement lol they've been out for like 30 yrs & still managed to put out some decent albums its all good I'll prob just buy the final one & listen to it once or twice before it's gone 🤘

I'm kinda sad to see Megadeth go 🤘🏻... not because I don't love the farewell tour vibe, but 'cause their music has been such a big part of my life for so long! Dave Mustaine's been open about his health issues and it's cool that he's still giving it his all. The new album is a great tribute to their thrash metal roots, but I gotta agree, some tracks feel a bit meh 🤔... like "Obey the Call" - it's just not my fave 🎸👍
