Metroid Prime 4: Beyond review – Samus Aran is suited up for action again. Was it worth the 18-year wait?

Samus Aran is back in action, and it's a momentous occasion for fans of the beloved Metroid series. After an 18-year wait, Retro Studios has finally released its long-awaited game, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. Does this highly anticipated title live up to expectations?

Classic Metroid fans will be thrilled to find that Prime 4 retains the atmospheric and eerie feel that defined the original games. The pace of exploration is deliberately slow, allowing players to soak in the foreboding environment as they navigate through the deserted facilities. As Samus delves deeper into the frozen laboratory, the tension builds up with each new discovery - a long-dormant beast waiting to be unleashed.

Newcomers to the series will also appreciate the introduction of psychic powers that enhance Samus's abilities and make her suit glow with an intense purple light. The controls are intuitive, with optional inputs such as using the Nintendo Switch remote as an aiming device or transforming into a rolling ball for added mobility.

While the game's visuals evoke a Giger-esque design reminiscent of classic sci-fi horror movies, there are also nods to other abandoned Nintendo franchises like F-Zero and Star Fox. The floaty controls on Samus's motorcycle and training courses feel eerily familiar, evoking memories of these long-forgotten series.

However, not everything about Prime 4 feels like a Metroid game. A new companion character named Myles MacKenzie sometimes offers awkwardly delivered quips that interrupt exploration, leading to frustration for the player. Samus also encounters more annoying soldiers whose conversations and helpful tips feel forced, drawing away from the tense atmosphere.

A spotty autosaving system means that players must replay entire sections of gameplay after accidental deaths - a frustrating experience, especially in environments filled with lava and danger.

Despite some missteps, Metroid Prime 4 feels like an experimental game from another era. While its slow pace might feel tedious or archaic to modern gamers, it now serves as a nostalgic reminder of the series' origins. The game's classic structure, featuring five distinct boss battles in varied arenas, is both predictable and endearing.

For fans of the Metroid Prime series, this reunion tour with the old formula is a joyous occasion. While some new material may not hit its mark, the return to form is undeniable. The wait for Prime 4 has been long, but it's clear that Retro Studios' dedication to crafting a genuine classic has paid off.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is set to release on December 4th and will retail at £58.99.

omg I'm so hyped for Metroid Prime 4! it feels like we've finally gotten our hands back on the series after that long hiatus 🤩 the atmosphere and sound design are SO on point, it's like we're actually in a creepy sci-fi horror movie lol i mean, who doesn't love a good dose of tension and foreboding?

the new powers for Samus are awesome too! that psychic stuff is so cool, especially when her suit starts glowing purple 😎 but ugh, the autosaving system needs to be seriously improved - it's like they're trying to annoy us on purpose 🙄

i'm not a huge fan of Myles MacKenzie tho... those quips are just kinda meh, can't we just have Samus speak for herself? 💁‍♀️ and don't even get me started on the annoying soldiers... can't they just be more silent and stealthy like normal soldiers?

anywayz, despite some minor gripes, Metroid Prime 4 feels like a blast from the past 🕰️ it's like we're playing an old game, but with all these new bells and whistles. i'm stoked to see what Retro Studios has in store for us this time around!

I'm so hyped for Metroid fans right now 🤩! I mean, who wouldn't want a game that's been in the making for 18 years? The atmosphere and tension in Prime 4 are spot on - it feels like you're actually exploring a creepy abandoned lab 😱. And yeah, the new powers are a great addition, but let's hope they don't feel like an overpowered crutch from now on. The controls could use some tweaks too, but overall, Retro Studios has done a solid job staying true to the series' roots.

One thing that did get me was how some of the dialogue and NPCs felt forced 🤔. It's not like it ruined the game for me or anything, but it did break the immersion a bit. And can we please just have autosave be more reliable? 😩 A little frustration is normal when you're playing a hard game, but this was just annoying.

Still, it's awesome to see classic elements that made Metroid so great in the first place 💥. I love how the game pays homage to old Nintendo franchises too - F-Zero and Star Fox fans will feel right at home 🎮. All in all, Prime 4 is a must-play for Metroid enthusiasts 🤘, even if it's not perfect.

omg u guys, metroid prime 4 feels like a total blast from the past 🚀! i mean, the atmosphere and vibes are so on point, it's like stepping back into that eerie frozen lab 🤖. the controls are super intuitive too, i loved using the nintendo switch remote as an aiming device 📱.

but i gotta say, some parts feel a bit wonky 😐, like when myles macKenzie shows up and starts spouting awkward one-liners 🙄. and the autosaving system is pretty sketchy, u gotta replay whole sections of gameplay after dying... that's just annoying 💔.

on the flip side, it's awesome to see retro studios stick to their guns and deliver a game that feels like a genuine classic 👍. fans of the series will love it, even if some new stuff doesn't quite hit the mark 🤔. overall, i'm stoked for this release on dec 4th 💥!

omg i'm SO hyped for this game!!! 😍 metroid fans have been waiting like forever for this and it's finally here! the atmosphere is so eerily familiar and the controls are still as smooth as ever 🤩 i love how they kept the psychic powers and samus's suit glowing purple - it feels super nostalgic but also fresh at the same time 💥 the slow pace might be a bit jarring for some modern gamers, but honestly, that's part of what makes it so classic 😊 can't wait to dive in and explore the frozen laboratory! 👽💫

I just finished playing Metroid Prime 4 and I gotta say, its like coming home 🏠! The atmosphere is so intense and eerie, it's like the old days all over again 😱. The controls are super smooth, but those floaty motorcycle controls from F-Zero and Star Fox feel like a trip down memory lane 🚀. The only thing that's kinda bugging me is Myles MacKenzie - I mean, his one-liners can be a bit cringeworthy at times 😳. But overall, it's a solid game that'll keep you hooked for hours on end 🔥. The nostalgia factor is strong with this one, and Retro Studios nailed the classic Metroid feel 👏. Can't wait to see what they do next! 🤔

omg I just found out about this new Metroid game & I'm so hyped!!! 🤩 i've played the old ones with my dad when i was like 10, they were so creepy & fun! 😅 can you guys explain what this "psychic powers" thingy does tho? 🤔 is it like a new suit upgrade or something? 💫 I wanna know more about Myles MacKenzie tho... is he like a new sidekick or what? 🤷‍♀️ also, why do they have to replay entire sections of gameplay after dying?? 😩 that sounds so annoying! 🚫

I just saw the cutest vid of a cat playing with yarn online 🐱😹, it's literally just sitting there batting at that string like it's trying to catch it... anyway back to Metroid Prime 4... I don't get why they made Samus's motorcycle controls all floaty, doesn't that just feel weird? and what's up with the Myles MacKenzie character, I mean I guess he's supposed to be a cool sidekick but those quips are just cringeworthy 😂

I'm telling ya, they're hiding something from us 🤔. First off, the fact that Samus's motorcycle controls are so similar to F-Zero is already giving me some major vibes... like, why did Nintendo abandon those franchises in the first place? And don't even get me started on Myles MacKenzie - what's up with that guy's awkward delivery? It feels way too scripted for a Metroid game. Plus, I'm not buying that whole "experimental game from another era" thing... sounds like Retro Studios was trying to throw us off the scent 🚫. And have you noticed how the game's visuals are kinda... similar to other sci-fi movies from the 80s? Like, is this some kind of conspiracy to make us forget about other classic Nintendo franchises? I'm onto something here, folks 💡!

I'm not sure what kind of crazy fanbase this series has but 18 years for one game? It feels like an eternity. I mean, I get it, classic games are worth revisiting, but come on! The only thing more annoying than the autosaving system is how slowly paced it is. My thumbs are cramping just thinking about it 😒.

And don't even get me started on Myles MacKenzie. What's up with that guy? I feel like I'm stuck in a bad 80s action movie. The only thing that would make this game for me is if they made a multiplayer mode where I could take down those annoying soldiers 😤.

The graphics and atmosphere are straight out of a sci-fi horror flick, but the gameplay is just...meh. I don't know, maybe I'm just too used to fast-paced action games now? Still, it's like Retro Studios took all the old stuff that made Metroid great and put it into one big nostalgic package 🤖.

I guess what I'm saying is, if you're a die-hard fan of the series, you'll probably love this. But for the rest of us, it might feel like a bit too much nostalgia. Either way, £58.99? That's just steep 😅.

I'm so glad Samus finally decided to leave her arm cannon collecting dust for like, 18 years 🤦‍♀️. I mean, who needs a compelling narrative or balanced gameplay mechanics when you can just have an atmospheric setting and some decent exploration time? The new psychic powers are cool, I guess - it's not like we haven't seen similar powers in other games already 💫.

The Giger-esque design is on point, but those floaty controls on the motorcycle? Yeah, that's a bit too familiar 😂. And Myles MacKenzie... what was he even supposed to be doing there? Just another annoying companion character who thinks they're funny 🤣. I mean, who does Samus have now? That awkwardly delivered quip- Dispenser 😴.

I'm kinda disappointed by the autosaving system - it's like Retro Studios just wanted to make sure players had an extra reason to rage quit 🎮. But hey, at least the game has that classic Metroid feel... even if it does feel a bit slow and dated 🔀. Can't wait to spend hours replaying those boss battles and collecting more arm cannon parts 💥!

Omg u guys Metroid fans are gonna freak out over this new game its like the original games all over again 🚀 but like not perfect they made some changes that dont feel right like Myles the new character is kinda cringeworthy lol his one-liners are so awkward 😂 and the autosaving system is super frustrating especially when u die in lava lol who hasn't had that experience?! 💀 anyway Retro Studios did an amazing job capturing the classic Metroid vibe and I'm low-key hyped for this release on 12/4 can't wait to get my hands on it 🎮

🤯 I'm loving the nostalgia vibes with this game! The slow pace of exploration feels so deliberate and immersive, it's like you're actually uncovering secrets in a creepy abandoned lab 🚀. But, gotta say, the autosaving system is straight up broken 🙄. Like, can't we just auto-save when Samus dies for once? 😩 It's frustrating to have to replay sections of gameplay because of one mistake. Still, overall I think Retro Studios nailed it with the atmosphere and boss battles - this game feels like a true Metroid experience 💥.

omg i'm so hyped!!! 🤩 Metroid Prime 4: Beyond feels like the real deal, it's like retro studios really got back into the groove! 😆 the atmosphere is SO immersive, you can feel that eerie vibe from the first time you step into the frozen lab. and oh man, those psychic powers are a total game changer! 💫 i loved how they balanced exploration with action, it's not too fast or too slow, just perfect.

but yeah, there are some bits that feel a bit wonky... like when miles (ugh, i hate him 😒) starts talking and interrupts the flow. and the autosaving system is super frustrating, especially in those lava-filled areas 🤦‍♂️

overall tho, this game is a must-play for any metroid fan! it's a love letter to the classic formula and it feels so satisfying to explore all those familiar environments again. can't wait to dive back into it on dec 4th 🎄👍

omg, i just played the first few hours of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond 🤯🔥 it's like they finally understood what made the original games so dang good! the atmosphere is soooo immersive, i felt like i was actually exploring a creepy abandoned lab 😅. but yeah, the new companion character Myles can be super cringeworthy at times 🙄 and that autosaving system is just annoying af 😩. still, it's def worth playing for all you metroid fans out there 👀

omg i'm so stoked Metroid Prime 4 is finally out!!! 🤩 the atmosphere in this game is SOOOOO right, it's like you're exploring a real abandoned lab 😱 and that psychic power thing is such a cool twist on samus's abilities 💫 but ugh don't even get me started on the autosaving system, that's just annoying af 😡 can't believe retro studios couldn't get that one right i mean i know the game is from another era and all but c'mon 2025 we should be able to save whenever we want now 🙄 still can't wait for it tho, £58.99 seems a bit steep tho maybe they'll do a sale or something 💸

omg u guys, i'm so meh about metroid prime 4... idk man, its like retro studios is trying too hard to recreate the classic formula, but its just not quite right 🤔. dont get me wrong, its still a great game and all, but some of the new additions feel kinda forced, like the annoying companion character myles... who thought that was a good idea? 😒. and the autosaving system is just so frustrating, like u cant even enjoy the tension without having to replay half your progress 🙄. but i guess its true that retro studios stuck to their guns and made a game that feels like it belongs in the metroid prime series 👍. ill def be checking it out on release day tho... £58.99 is a bit steep tho 😳

omg i'm so hyped to see Samus back in action!!! the atmosphere and tension in this game are seriously on point 🎮😱 it's like they took all the best parts from the classics and mixed them with some new ideas that actually work. the psychic powers are a great addition and the controls feel super responsive... minus those annoying autosave glitches 🤦‍♂️ idk why they couldn't just make it more seamless, ugh! but overall i'm loving this nostalgic trip back to the Metroid world 💥

omg i'm literally hyped for metroid fans!! 😍 i can feel the nostalgia and tension building up while playing through the game... it's like, you're really exploring these creepy labs with samus, and it feels so atmospheric and immersive! 🤖 i love how they kept the classic feel but also introduced some new powers that enhance samus's abilities... the psychic powers are so cool!! 💫 idk if i'd play through it again after beating it tho lol, but for fans of the series, this is like a dream come true 🌟

just saw this news about Metroid Prime 4: i'm so stoked 🤩 finally after all these years the game is out and it's literally what i've been waiting for - slow paced, atmospheric, creepy... it feels like the classic games again! but some new stuff doesn't feel right to me, like that companion character who's always spouting cheesy lines 🙄 and autosaving system is whack lol. still can't wait to dive in though, 5 distinct boss battles sounds epic 💥
