Moderate Long Island Democrats sour on ICE after killing of Alex Pretti

Shifts in Long Island Politics After Fatal Shooting of Protester

In the wake of federal agents fatally shooting Alex Pretti, a 34-year-old filmmaker who was documenting a protest in Minneapolis, several moderate Long Island Democrats have reversed their stance on U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Just last week, they backed increased funding for the Department of Homeland Security, but this week, they've taken a strong rebuke against the agency.

Representatives Tom Suozzi and Laura Gillen, who represent parts of Long Island, were among just seven House Democrats to vote in favor of more DHS funding. However, Suozzi admitted that his initial support was not a vote on the morality of ICE's actions but rather due to the presence of FEMA funding in the bill. In a sign of growing discomfort with the agency, Gillen recently signed onto a resolution to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, who has defended the agents involved in Pretti's death.

This shift reflects the anxiety among New Yorkers about the potential consequences of large-scale ICE operations within their state. The killing has sparked calls for action, including the push to let people sue federal agents and prevent them from wearing masks while on duty. As Governor Kathy Hochul has proposed in her budget, this would aim to restrict civil immigration enforcement in sensitive areas such as schools, hospitals, and houses of worship.

While Republicans have been critical of these proposals, even some members of President Donald Trump's party are starting to question their tactics. U.S. Rep. Mike Lawler recently wrote an op-ed essay stating that Pretti's death was "preventable" and calling for ICE to reassess its methods.

The situation is putting Hochul under pressure, particularly with the recent developments in Minnesota. With a re-election year looming in a purple state, she must navigate these conversations carefully without alienating her base or antagonizing potential voters. As Professor Christina Greer notes, Hochul will have to tread a fine line between addressing the concerns of immigrant advocacy groups and maintaining support among her own party.

The debate over government shutdowns over ICE funding is also intensifying. Senate Democrats are refusing to back the same bill that passed in the House, leaving the possibility open for a government shutdown. As tensions escalate, one thing is clear: the killing of Alex Pretti has become a catalyst for change in Long Island politics, with far-reaching implications for how the state approaches immigration enforcement and its relationship with federal agencies.

I'm getting some serious anxiety vibes from this story ๐Ÿคฏ. It's like politicians are trying to flip on a dime just because one guy got killed. Tom Suozzi was all about that DHS funding last week, but now he's suddenly a anti-ICE warrior? Meanwhile, Laura Gillen is impeaching Kristi Noem and calling for maskless federal agents? Come on! ๐Ÿค”

This whole thing feels like a power struggle in the Democratic Party, with Hochul caught right in the middle. She needs to walk this tightrope without alienating her base or losing votes to Republicans. The Trump party is even starting to question their tactics? ๐Ÿ˜‚ That's some serious internal conflict.

I'm all for reining in ICE and making sure these agencies don't abuse their power, but this feels like a hasty decision. What about the root causes of immigration issues? Are we just treating symptoms instead of addressing the underlying problems? ๐Ÿ’ธ

omg, this is crazy ๐Ÿ˜ฑ! i'm all about seeing the good in everything, so let's focus on the positives here ๐ŸŒˆ. first off, it's amazing to see politicians like Tom Suozzi and Laura Gillen changing their stance after such a tragic event. it shows that they're willing to listen and adapt to the concerns of their constituents ๐Ÿ’ก.

and can we talk about how US Rep Mike Lawler is speaking out against ICE? even if he's from President Trump's party, it's still super refreshing to see someone questioning the agency's tactics ๐Ÿค”. it's like, yeah, let's have a constructive conversation about this instead of just being all "we're right and you're wrong" ๐Ÿ˜’.

of course, there are still a lot of complexities to navigate here, but i'm hopeful that Governor Hochul will be able to find a way forward that works for everyone ๐Ÿคž. and hey, even if there is a government shutdown, it's not all bad news - maybe we can use this time to have some real conversations about our values and priorities ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ’ฌ.

I think its pretty messed up that those agents shot that guy... ๐Ÿค•๐Ÿ˜ข Alex was just trying to document what was going on at the protest and now he's dead. That's like, so unfair. It's not like he was even a threat or anything.

It seems like people are finally starting to realize that ICE is not doing things right. I mean, those moderate Democrats who were backing increased funding for DHS last week were all about it this week. They're suddenly seeing the light and wanting to take down Kristi Noem. That's kinda cool, but also kinda frustrating because why did they wait so long?

I'm worried about Gov Hochul trying to navigate all these conversations without alienating anyone. She needs to find a way to make people feel safe and not scared of getting in trouble with the law just because of their immigration status.

The idea of people being able to sue federal agents or not wearing masks while on duty is kinda sweet, though... ๐Ÿ’ก๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ It's about time someone took responsibility for those guys' actions.

I'M SO FED UP WITH ALL THIS IMMIGRANT STUFF!!! ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿ’” IT'S LIKE, WE NEED TO STOP BEING SO AFRAID OF PEOPLE COMING INTO OUR COUNTRY AND START TREATING THEM WITH RESPECT AND DIGNITY! ๐ŸŒŽ๐Ÿ’• I MEAN, WHAT EVEN IS THE POINT OF HAVING AN ICE AGENTY THAT'S JUST GOING TO KILL SOMEONE OVER A PROTEST?! ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ IT'S LIKE WE'RE JUST WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO GET KILLED BEFORE WE DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!

AND I KNOW WE NEED TO BE CAREFUL WITH OUR WORDS AND STUFF, BUT COME ON, WE CAN'T JUST SIT BACK AND WATCH AS THESE PEOPLE ARE TREATED LIKE SECOND-CLASS CITIZENS! ๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿ’” IT'S TIME FOR US TO STEP UP AND SAY ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿฝ

AND I'M SO OVER THE REPUBLICANS BEING ALL SHY ABOUT THIS STUFF TOO... ๐Ÿ™„ THEY'RE ALWAYS TRYING TO SAVVY PEOPLE WITH THEIR POLITICAL SPEECHES, BUT WE KNOW WHAT'S REALLY GOING ON HERE. WE NEED MORE PEOPLE LIKE U.S. REP. MIKE LAWLER WHO ARE WILLING TO CALL OUT THE PROBLEMS AND DEMAND CHANGE! ๐Ÿ’ฏ

omg u guys i cant even ๐Ÿคฏ this alex pretti thing is getting crazy the fact that rep suozzi changed his mind so quick cuz of FEMA funding lol what a copout & gillen signing onto that impeachment resolution is fire i love how she's speaking truth to power ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ i'm all for restrictin civil immigration enforcement in sensitive areas schools hospitals houses of worship etc ๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿฅ๐Ÿ’• the gov needs to step up her game tho with re-election looming n her purple state she can't afford 2 alienate immigrant groups or antagonize her own party ๐Ÿค u think lawler's op-ed is a start but we need more ๐Ÿ’ช

I'm not sure I agree that this shift in Long Island politics is all sunshine and rainbows ๐ŸŒž๐Ÿ’ฆ. On one hand, it's great to see some Democrats speaking out against ICE and pushing for reforms. But on the other hand, I think they're being a bit too hasty to turn their backs on increased DHS funding. That FEMA cash isn't going to line anyone's pockets ๐Ÿ’ธ. And what about all the folks who actually need that funding to deal with real crises? It's like they're playing politics instead of tackling actual problems ๐Ÿค”.

And don't even get me started on this impeachment business ๐Ÿšซ. I mean, I'm all for holding people in power accountable, but Kristi Noem is just a politician trying to do her job ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ’ผ. Can we please focus on finding real solutions instead of using impeachment as a band-aid? It's like we're throwing more problems at the table instead of solving them ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ.

I'm also worried about Governor Hochul getting caught in this crossfire ๐Ÿ’ฅ. She needs to be careful not to alienate either side and find that sweet spot where she can make some real progress without alienating her base or antagonizing potential voters ๐ŸŽฏ. This is a delicate dance, folks!

this whole situation is really messed up ๐Ÿค• ...i mean think about it - a guy just trying to document some protests and he ends up getting killed by cops...and now we're seeing this huge shift in politics on Long Island because of it ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ it's crazy how one thing can spark so much change. the whole thing with ICE is super complicated, but i think what's most important right now is that people are talking about it and demanding answers ๐Ÿ’ฌ like, we need to have a more open conversation about immigration policies and how they affect our communities ๐ŸŒŽ and not just rely on party lines or personal interests...we gotta put people's lives above politics ๐Ÿ™

OMG this is crazy ๐Ÿคฏ, I'm literally shaking thinking about what happened to that poor guy Alex ๐Ÿ˜ญ, no one deserves to lose their life like that. And now Reps on Long Island are freaking out and reversing their stance on ICE ๐Ÿค, it's like they're scared of the wrong thing ๐Ÿ’”, they should be supporting the people instead of the agency.

And can you believe some rep is actually calling for ICE to reassess its methods ๐Ÿ™„, finally someone with some common sense! And Gov Hochul needs to stay calm and not let this turn into a total mess ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™€๏ธ, she's got to balance her party's needs with doing what's right.

I don't get why people are even debating government shutdowns over ICE funding ๐Ÿค”, it's like they're more concerned about the agency than human lives ๐Ÿ˜ณ. This is all so unnecessary and it's bringing up a lot of anxiety among New Yorkers ๐ŸŒŸ, can't we just focus on being kind and compassionate instead? ๐Ÿ™

Its crazy what's happening on Long Island rn ๐Ÿคฏ they're suddenly against ICE but I'm still not convinced it's all about votes and politics... Tom Suozzi's explanation about FEMA funding is pretty suspicious ๐Ÿ˜’ and Laura Gillen signing onto that impeachment resolution is a big deal. The governor's budget proposal could be a game-changer, though - restricting civil immigration enforcement in sensitive areas is a good start ๐Ÿ’ช. I'm still waiting to see how this plays out with the re-election year looming and the debate over government shutdowns... it feels like we're at a tipping point here ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ.

๐Ÿค•๐Ÿ˜ž The police shooting of that protestor was totally senseless ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ! It's wild how some politicians are all about party loyalty ๐Ÿ’ผ but then flip on ICE ๐Ÿ’ฅ when it comes to something as simple as a death penalty ๐Ÿ˜ฌ. If they really cared, they'd be taking real action instead of just signing onto resolutions ๐Ÿ“. Meanwhile, the Governor is walking a tightrope ๐Ÿคนโ€โ™€๏ธ trying not to lose her base or alienate voters with a bunch of feel-good policies ๐ŸŒˆ. It's gonna be super interesting to see how this all plays out in NY politics ๐Ÿค”!

it's wild to see those moderate Dems flip on ICE funding ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿ‘€ like they're trying to distance themselves from the party that's been super critical of Trump's immigration policies ๐Ÿ’ธ. I'm not surprised though, Long Islanders have been vocal about their concerns when it comes to ICE operations in the state. Kathy Hochul is gonna have a tough time navigating this one, she needs to balance appeasing the immigrant advocacy groups with keeping her base on board ๐Ÿค๐ŸŒŽ. The fact that even some Repubs are questioning ICE's methods is interesting too - I guess even Trump's party isn't entirely behind the agency ๐Ÿ’ช.
