NASA Astronaut Chris Williams and Crewmates Arrive at Space Station in Historic Soyuz Launch
A new crew member is now on board the International Space Station, marking a significant milestone for space exploration. NASA astronaut Chris Williams was joined by two Russian cosmonauts, Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and Sergei Mikaev, as they embarked on their six-month journey aboard the orbiting laboratory.
The trio launched from Kazakhstan's Baikonur Cosmodrome at 4:27 a.m. EST, reaching space just three hours later. After a series of orbital maneuvers, the Soyuz MS-28 spacecraft docked with the Rassvet module at 7:34 a.m., marking the crew's arrival.
The Expedition 73 crew, consisting of NASA astronauts Mike Fincke and Zena Cardman, along with JAXA astronaut Kimiya Yui, greeted Williams, Kud-Sverchkov, and Mikaev as they stepped out of their spacecraft. The welcoming ceremony is set to take place after the hatch opens at approximately 10:10 a.m.
During his time on the space station, Williams will be conducting various scientific experiments aimed at advancing human space exploration and benefiting life on Earth. He will be working on several projects, including testing a new modular workout system for long-duration missions, improving cryogenic fuel efficiency, growing semiconductor crystals in space, and assisting NASA in designing new re-entry safety protocols.
As Expedition 74 begins on December 8, with Kim, Ryzhikov, and Zubritsky departing the station after an eight-month science mission, Williams will be playing a key role in maintaining the crew's health and well-being. The upcoming change of command ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, December 7, at 10:25 a.m.
