National cabinet to meet on Friday on health and disability funding – as it happened

The Australian government is set to discuss a long-overdue deal on health and disability funding, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese urging state leaders to accept over $23 billion in extra spending for public hospitals. The plan aims to transfer some costs for services currently provided on the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) back to the states.

Albanese has also condemned comments made by former US President Donald Trump that Nato-aligned soldiers, including Australians, "stayed a little off the frontlines" in Afghanistan. The Prime Minister described Trump's remarks as "completely unacceptable".

The Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is due to visit Australia in March and address the federal parliament.

Meanwhile, Victoria is bracing for record-breaking temperatures this week, with some areas expected to experience seven consecutive days over 40C. Forest fire management officials have warned that a bushfire near Carlisle River has left residents in Gellibrand with only one kilometre of land remaining before the fire advances.

Four people were arrested after protests disrupted the start of the Tour Down Under cycling event in South Australia on Sunday. The Extinction Rebellion activists were holding up signs pressuring the event to drop the fossil fuel company's sponsorship.

Former Liberal prime minister Malcolm Turnbull has welcomed the appointment of Greg Moriarty as the new US ambassador, describing him as an "excellent choice". Moriarty is a veteran public servant and former chief of staff to Turnbull.

🤔 I'm not sure about this new plan on health and disability funding... it's a bit confusing. They're gonna give some states more money for hospitals but also move some costs back to them? 📊 It might be fair but could it lead to more bureaucracy and headaches for the states? 😬 I'd rather see some compromises, like phasing in the changes or giving the states more control over how they spend the funds. That way we can ensure everyone gets the help they need without breaking the bank 💸

By the way, did you catch that comments from Donald Trump about Nato soldiers? 🤦‍♂️ Completely unacceptable and unprofessional. I'm glad PM Albanese spoke out against it 🙌.

Meanwhile, I heard Victoria is going to be scorched this week... 40C+ for seven days straight? 😓 That's brutal. Hope everyone stays cool and safe ☀️

And yay for Greg Moriarty being appointed as the new US ambassador! 🎉 Malcolm Turnbull gave him a thumbs up which is always a good sign 👍

I think it's great that Australia is getting more funding for public hospitals 🙌 but at the same time, I'm worried about the impact on the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) – what if they can't handle all these extra costs? 🤔 And, um, isn't it a bit weird that the Australian government is taking on some of those costs from the states? 🤷‍♂️

On the other hand, I love how Australia is standing up to Donald Trump's comments – he's just a... well, you know 😒. But, wait, what if we're overreacting? Shouldn't we just ignore him and focus on more important things?

And, omg, those record-breaking temperatures in Victoria are terrifying 🌡️! I hope everyone stays safe. But, you know what they say, "when life gives you lemons, make lemonade" – or something like that 😊.

On a completely different note, it's awesome to hear about the new US ambassador Greg Moriarty being appointed – he sounds super qualified 🎓. But, is it too early to speculate about his views on climate change? 😉

omg I'm so frustrated with our politicians! 🤯 They're always making promises but never follow through. Like, $23 billion for hospitals sounds amazing but what's the catch? Are we just gonna have more bureaucrats sucking up our tax dollars? 🤑 And can we please talk about the state of our environment? We're still dealing with bushfires and record temperatures?! It's like, wake up, Australia! We need to take care of our planet before it takes care of us. 😩

Wow 💥, just thinking about all these things happening in Australia at once is crazy! First, health funding, then Trump dissing Aussie soldiers... seems like there's a lot going on 🤯. And now, Canadian PM Mark Carney is coming? That's gonna be interesting to see how the Aus and Canada relationship plays out this year. Temperatures are about to get really wild in Victoria too - 7 days straight over 40C? that's no joke ☀️.

I'm getting super frustrated with these politicians always trying to one-up each other 🤯. First, we've got the PM pushing for more funding for hospitals, which is basically just common sense considering how bad our healthcare system is right now 💸. But then, Trump goes and makes some totally unacceptable comments about Australian soldiers in Afghanistan 🚫. And what's with all these protests and activism? I get that we need to bring up climate change and stuff, but can't we do it without being so confrontational? 🤔

And another thing, has anyone noticed how many high-profile politicians are having their own little drama going on? Like, Malcolm Turnbull welcoming Greg Moriarty as the new US ambassador... sounds like some backroom deal to me 🤑. And what's with all these state leaders not taking the PM seriously about health funding? It's just so much to keep track of 💭.

Anyway, I'm hoping that Carney's visit will bring some actual change instead of more drama 🤞. Australia needs real progress on healthcare and climate action, not just politicians playing games 🔥.

🤔 gotta say, 23 billion bucks for hospitals sounds like a good starting point but what's gonna happen to those NDIS costs? States got their hands on it now... 💸

can't believe trump made those comments about afghanistan tho 😳 nato soldiers putting themselves in harm's way is the real thing.

carnt wait till march when carney comes to visit, i heard he's got some big ideas 🤝 but let's not forget about victoria & that bushfire 🚒🔥 seven days over 40c? are we sure this isnt a test run for apocalypse ? 😂

The Aussies are finally getting some decent news... or at least, it's about time someone did 🙄. The health funding deal is long overdue, so I'll take it while it lasts 💸. 23 billion bucks for hospitals? That's a nice chunk of change to help with all the bureaucracy and red tape that comes with it.

And kudos to PM Albanese for calling out Trump's comments about Aussie soldiers 🙏. Can you imagine what kind of diplomacy that guy would bring to a meeting? "Hey, mate, I'm gonna say some stuff that'll make your head spin"... no thanks 😂.

But seriously, it's always good to see world leaders taking responsibility and speaking up for their people. Even if they can be a bit... dramatic 🤣. Bring on the Canadian PM visit – maybe he can bring some much-needed sunshine (and cooler temperatures) with him ☀️. Victoria's heatwave is no joke, btw – hope everyone stays hydrated! 💦

omg $23 billion for hospitals is crazy 🤯 think the aussies should be like what's next? 🤑 how can they afford this when they're still dealing with high electricity bills in nsw? ⚡️ btw, what's up with these protests disrupting events? i get where they're coming from but it's getting out of hand 🙄

lol what's up with Trump? dude just can't keep it together, always spouting off something crazy. Australia needs that $23 billion for its hospitals anyway, so I'm all for it 🤑. And now we're dealing with bushfires and record heat... it's like the country is on fire (literally) 🌡️. I mean, who sponsors a cycling event if they don't want to be questioned about their fossil fuels? seems like Extinction Rebellion is onto something 📣. On a more serious note, nice to see Greg Moriarty getting the ambassador gig, he's a top bloke 👍. And good on Malcolm Turnbull for welcoming him... it's always great to see old faces in new roles 💼

I'm feeling so old 😔. Like, remember when we used to be excited about politicians making deals? Now it's just all about who's going to say what and get the funding 🤑. And Donald Trump? Come on, mate! You'd think someone in his position would know better than to make a crack about our troops 💔.

And then there's this NDIS thing... I mean, I get that it's an important issue, but can't we just have some constructive discussion for once? No one likes a good ol' fashioned tantrum 🤬. Anyway, hope the Canberra heatwave doesn't turn into a real emergency 🔥.

On a more positive note, it's cool to see Malcolm Turnbull giving Greg Moriarty his seal of approval 👍. Maybe we'll finally get some sense in Washington? A bloke can dream, right? 😊

so like what's up with these protests in Adelaide 🤔? i mean i get that climate change is a big deal, but protesting at a cycling event seems kinda...specific 🚴‍♂️. are they trying to distract us from the real issues or just trying to make a point about fossil fuels and stuff? it's not like they're stopping the whole event or anything...just holding up signs for a bit 😐.

and btw, 7 consecutive days over 40C in Melbourne is crazy hot 🔥! i hope everyone stays cool and safe. hope the bushfire situation isn't too bad either...i've heard those fires can be super intense 🌳.

anywayz, happy to see Malcolm Turnbull is supporting Greg Moriarty for US ambassador 🤝. that's pretty cool of him to speak up on behalf of his old mate 😊.

Wow 🤯, 23 billion for hospitals? That's like, crazy money 💸! Interesting how Aussie politicians are finally sorting out health funding. Hope it doesn't come at the expense of disability support tho 🤔.

Meanwhile, what's up with Trump again 😒? Can't he just keep his opinions to himself?! Not cool that he dragged AUS into this drama 🙄.

Interesting how Carney is coming to Aus in March 🌊. Guess we'll see some diplomatic vibes then 👥.

Ugh, 40C temps in Vic? That's like, super hot 🔥! Hope no more fires break out in the bushfire season 🌳.

🤔 When life gives you lemons, make lemonade – but what about when life gives you bushfires? 🌳😬 We need to take care of our environment before we face the consequences.

I'm so worried about those temps in Vic 🌡️! 7 days over 40C is just insane. I mean, what's going on with our climate? We're always talking about global warming, but it feels like we're still playing catch-up. And bushfires are getting more intense by the year... it's heartbreaking to think about those people in Gellibrand losing their homes. 🙏

And can we talk about Trump for a sec? Like, what is wrong with that man? "Staying off the frontlines"? Are you kidding me? It sounds like someone who has no idea how war works. I'm so glad Albanese called him out on it 👊.

But anyway, let's focus on the positives – Malcolm Turnbull welcoming Greg Moriarty as the new US ambassador is a great move! 🎉 As a seasoned public servant, he'll definitely bring some much-needed expertise to the table. Fingers crossed for a smooth transition and some good international relations 🤞

omg i'm literally shaking with anxiety thinking about our health system rn we need that extra funding like NOW 🤯 and can u believe trump said those thingz about afghanistan lololol what a total noob but for real though let's hope carney comes to australia and brings some good vibes and also omg victoria is gonna be HELL this week i'm talking record temps and bushfires everywhere please send help 🌡️🔥 and those protesters at the tour down under were low-key heroic im all about that #fossilfuelfree life 💚

I'm still not convinced about this $23 billion health funding deal for Australia... where's the breakdown on how that cash will be spent exactly? What specific hospitals or regions are getting the extra cash? And don't even get me started on Trump's comments, but can we trust the source of those? Was it a CNN interview or just some Twitter rant?

And what about the bushfires in Vic? How many homes were destroyed and who's covering the costs? The government's talking about climate change, but where's the action plan? And I'm still waiting to see if there'll be any concrete changes made after Carney visits. Canada's got its own issues, so I need more info on what he's proposing.

Four arrests for protesting at the Tour Down Under? That sounds like a publicity stunt... are those Extinction Rebels just trying to get their 15 minutes of fame?

omg just read about Australia getting 23 billion more for hospitals 🤯 that's huge but like, what took so long?! it feels like they've been talking about this for ages... anyway, I'm all for it, more healthcare funding is always a good thing 💊 hope it finally starts to make a difference in people's lives. and btw, can we talk about how Donald Trump just dissed Aussie soldiers on live tv 🤷‍♂️ completely unacceptable, imo. and those protesters at the Tour Down Under cycling event? I get where they're coming from, but like, a little more constructive way to express their concerns would've been nice 😊

Ugh, I'm telling ya, something fishy about this whole situation 😒. First off, that extra $23 billion for hospitals sounds like a sweet deal on the surface, but what's really going on? Is it just a smokescreen to distract us from the real issues? And have you noticed how quickly Albanese is pushing the states to accept this funding? It's like he's trying to railroad them into submission 🚂. And let's not forget about Trump's comments - what a total cop-out 🤥. Meanwhile, Canada comes in and suddenly everyone's best buds? Coincidence? I don't think so 🤑. And those protests at the Tour Down Under event? Just a clever distraction from the real agenda 💪. It all feels like a big show to me 🎭. Mark my words, there's more to this than meets the eye 🔍.

I don’t usually comment but I think it’s a bit weird that they're talking about the NDIS deal at the same time as Trump making some pretty out-there comments about Australia's role in Afghanistan 🤔💡. Like, can't we just focus on getting the funding sorted for our hospitals and stuff without all this drama? And what's up with the protests disrupting the Tour Down Under event? I get that they're trying to raise awareness about climate change but holding up signs and disrupting events isn't exactly the most effective way to do it 🌪️. On a more positive note, it's cool to see Malcolm Turnbull giving Greg Moriarty his seal of approval - hope he does a great job as US ambassador 😊
