New Jersey residents with criminal convictions now can serve as jurors

New Jersey Residents with Past Convictions Now Eligible for Jury Duty

A significant shift has taken place in the Garden State, as Governor Phil Murphy's latest executive order now permits residents with prior convictions to serve on juries. Under state law, individuals convicted of an indictable offense were previously barred from participating in either criminal or civil trials. However, with this new directive, those who have completed their prison sentence, parole, or probation stemming from their convictions will be qualified for jury duty.

According to Murphy's administration, the expansion of jury eligibility is expected to benefit over 350,000 individuals across the state. This move aims to increase diversity among jurors and ultimately strengthen democracy by ensuring that juries better represent the communities they serve.

The new order only applies to those whose convictions occurred prior to January 10th and does not cover federal or other state's law convictions, as well as cases involving treason or impeachment. It is part of Murphy's broader "second chances" agenda, which seeks to provide a more second chance for residents with a criminal record.

Murphy highlighted the significance of jury service as an essential aspect of United States citizenship and democratic self-government. He emphasized that this expanded eligibility will not only contribute to a more inclusive democracy but also help bridge the gap between those who have been incarcerated and their communities.

The executive order is part of Murphy's efforts to provide clemency for residents convicted of crimes, including a recent initiative that has issued 307 pardons or commutations. Prior to this decision, Pennsylvania law prohibited individuals with past convictions from serving as jurors unless they had received a pardon or amnesty.

😊 I think this is a huge step forward for the state of New Jersey. Having people with past convictions serve on juries can add a whole new layer of perspective and understanding to the community. It's not just about giving them a second chance, it's also about giving the community a more diverse group of jurors who have been through similar experiences. Plus, it's always good to have a more inclusive democracy 🀝. I'm curious to see how this plays out in practice. Will it lead to more guilty verdicts being overturned due to alternative perspectives from jurors? Only time will tell...

I think it's AMAZING 😊 that NJ is finally getting on board with giving people a second chance! I mean, who doesn't want to give someone a shot at being an active member of their community? It's all about DEMOCRACY and representation, you know? 🀝 By letting more people serve on juries, we're gonna get a better idea of what the average person is thinking and feeling. It's like, fair enough! Let those who've done their time try to make a positive impact now. I'm all for it πŸ’―

It's about time we see some change in the way we think about people with past convictions πŸ™Œ. I mean, who gets a second chance and who doesn't? It's like that old phrase, "you can't keep someone down" 😎. I'm all for giving people a shot at redemption. The idea of having 350k more people serve on juries is definitely a step in the right direction πŸ’ͺ. And let's be real, it's about time we see some diversity on those jury panels too 🌈. I mean, who says you can't have a lawyer from Newark or a doctor from Jersey City serving on a jury? πŸ€” It's all about representation and making sure our democracy is truly inclusive πŸŽ‰. And Governor Murphy is definitely on the right track with this whole "second chances" thing πŸ™Œ

πŸ€” I'm loving the idea of expanding jury eligibility in New Jersey! It's about time we start giving people a second chance. πŸ™Œ Those 350k folks who were previously barred from serving on juries are going to bring some fresh perspectives to the table, which can only be good for our democratic system. Plus, it's just so... neatly organized 😊 I mean, have you seen the new layout of the Governor's website? It's like a work of art! πŸ’»

πŸ’‘ I think its super cool that NJ is doing this 🀝! It makes total sense to give ppl with past convs another shot at jury duty πŸ™Œ. Its all about giving ppl a second chance and makin sure our democracy is reppin the community properly πŸ’―. We should do this in other states too! πŸ“ˆ

I'm so about this new rule in New Jersey lol 🀩! It's like, finally giving people a second chance after they've served their time, you know? I think it's dope that they're expanding jury duty to 350k+ ppl who have prior convictions - it's all about diversity and representation πŸ’―. And yeah, Gov Murphy is all about providing "second chances" for everyone 🀝. It's not just about fixing the past but also making sure our communities are more inclusive and strong. I'm down for anything that promotes rehabilitation and second chances πŸ‘.

OMG, like, finally! 🀩 New Jersey is catching up with the rest of the country on this one. I mean, it's about time those with past convictions got a second chance to serve their community and all that jazz πŸ’–. It's not like they're going to be all crazy and unpredictable or anything πŸ˜‚, they've done their time and are ready to contribute.

And, honestly, 350k people is a pretty big deal 🀯. I'm sure it'll help bring more diversity to juries and whatnot. Plus, it's just a matter of fairness, you know? People make mistakes, they pay their time, and then they should be able to serve their community without being held back by their past πŸ”“.

I'm also loving the whole "second chances" vibe 🌈 from Governor Murphy. It's all about giving people another shot at life and making things right πŸ’ͺ. And, let's be real, if we're gonna talk about democracy and citizenship, then everyone should have a chance to participate, regardless of their past πŸ‘₯.

🀝 This is kinda cool, I guess? Like, it's about time we started treating people with a record more fairly. You feel me? They've been locked up and served their time, so why not give 'em a shot to make a difference in the community again? It's all about giving second chances, right? πŸ‘ Maybe it'll even help break the cycle of crime and recidivism. Plus, more diverse juries can't be a bad thing... πŸ€”

Just heard the news about New Jersey expanding jury duty to people with past convictions! 🀩 That's a major step towards giving everyone a second chance. I'm all for it! πŸ’– It's only fair that those who've completed their sentence get a shot at serving on a jury and contributing to their community. Plus, it'll help break the stigma around having a criminal record. 350k people across NJ are going to benefit from this - awesome move by Governor Murphy! πŸ‘

omg can't believe NJ is finally getting its act together πŸ™ŒπŸ½ lol think it's high time those with a record get a second chance to serve their community and all you Philly folks better copy this ASAP, no more PA law holding people back πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ gotta give props to Gov Phil for trying to bridge that gap, now we just need more states to follow suit πŸ™πŸ½

I'm loving this new direction in NJ πŸ™Œ. It's about time we started giving people a second chance after they've done their time. I mean, who hasn't made mistakes at some point? It's all about learning from those mistakes and becoming a better version of yourself. Having 350k more people on the jury pool is gonna make a huge difference in making sure our courts are truly representative of the communities they serve 🀝. Plus, it's just plain cool that Gov Murphy is leading the charge on this one πŸ’ͺ. It's all about fairness and giving everyone an equal shot at participating in the democratic process πŸ—³οΈ.

I'm loving this move by Governor Murphy 🀩! It's about time we have a more inclusive democracy where everyone gets a second chance. I mean, who hasn't made some mistakes in the past, right? 😊 This is gonna be super beneficial for people trying to turn their lives around and give back to their communities.

I'm not surprised it's happening in New Jersey though, they're always at the forefront of things like this. And 350k people getting a shot at jury duty? That's awesome! I can see how this would make a difference in making our courts more diverse and representative of the community.

It's interesting to think about how this might affect the whole justice system too... do you think it'll lead to more people being willing to participate in their communities? πŸ€” Only time will tell, but for now, I'm just excited to see more people getting a second chance. πŸ‘

πŸ€” so like, did you know that 75% of US citizens have a felony conviction on their record? πŸ“Š and now New Jersey is trying to change the game by letting people with prior convictions serve on juries. 🚫 it's all about representation, right? πŸ’β€β™€οΈ 1 in 5 jurors will be from diverse backgrounds, which is lit! πŸŽ‰ btw, have you seen the stats on jury diversity? 65% of eligible jurors are from low-income neighborhoods 🀝

πŸ€” I'm not entirely convinced about this one... like, what's next? people with felony record being able to vote in local elections too? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ Source needed on how many ppl actually want convicted felons serving on juries?

Also, 350k ppl sounds like a lot, but are these convictions really from before Jan 10th? Can we verify this? And what's the definition of "indictable offense" again? is it like, violent crime or something? πŸ€”

Murphy's trying to strengthen democracy by having more diverse juries, but isn't that kinda reverse-engineering democracy? I mean, shouldn't our justice system already be pretty inclusive?

And what about the people who get picked for jury duty and they can't even handle the stress of it? like, mental health concerns and all... πŸ€• Source needed on how this new law addresses those concerns.
