A tourist was stabbed multiple times while changing her infant daughter's diaper in a restroom at Macy's Herald Square store in New York City on Thursday. Kerri Aherne, 43, from Massachusetts, allegedly carried out the attack before her husband disarmed the suspect and held her until police arrived.
The victim, who was visiting Manhattan from California, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition. However, it is unclear how her infant daughter was injured during the incident.
According to authorities, Aherne stabbed the tourist in her back and arm before being subdued by her husband. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department confirmed that both the victim and her husband work for LASD.
A Macy's spokesperson has expressed concern over the safety of customers and employees, stating that the store will not comment further on the incident, referring authorities for additional information.
Police said that the attack appears to be unprovoked and is currently under investigation. Aherne was charged with two counts of assault, attempted murder, criminal possession of a weapon and endangering the welfare of a child and is expected to appear in court later Friday.
