Notes from around the NFL: Joe Schoen stays, Jonathan Gannon fired, and more

NFL Shake-Up: Teams Make Moves Amidst Underperforming Seasons

The NFL regular season may be over, but for teams that underperformed, "Black Monday" has arrived. In this season of change, some notable moves were made by teams looking to shake off their struggles.

One team that got a reprieve was the New York Giants. Despite finishing 6-11 in 2024 and 3-14 last season, head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen were retained. This decision may come as a surprise to many Giants fans, who have grown accustomed to the team's struggles. Schoen's four-year tenure has yielded a cumulative record of 22-45-1 and a -347 point differential.

Meanwhile, the Arizona Cardinals fired head coach Jonathan Gannon after a dismal season that saw them finish last in the NFC West. Gannon's career record stands at 15-36 (0.294), marked by several cringeworthy moments during his tenure. The team's struggles are often attributed to ownership's inability to make sound hires, particularly when it comes to head coaches and general managers.

In other news, the Washington Commanders fired defensive coordinator Joe Whitt. Despite finishing with a 4-12 record, changes are still possible in the offseason as the team looks to revamp their defense. The Commanders' offensive play-calling has also been called into question, particularly under new coach Dan Quinn.

The Dallas Cowboys parted ways with defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, citing the team's struggles on defense. Meanwhile, the Miami Dolphins requested an interview with Eagles Assistant GM Alec Halaby, who is expected to land a general manager position in the near future.

As teams look to regroup and rebuild, some question whether they're making the right moves. Will these changes be enough to turn around their seasons, or will they continue to struggle? Only time will tell.

I'm not sure I agree with all these coaching and GM changes 🤔. Some of them seem like a cop-out to me... like letting go of someone because you're not winning is a clear indication that the bigger problem lies elsewhere, not in the person themselves. What's really going on behind the scenes? Are teams just trying to shift the blame? I'm all for change, but I think we need to be more strategic about it 🤷‍♂️.

im so confused about the giants getting to keep diboll & schoen i mean dont get me wrong they r not the worst but 6-11 is still pretty bad for nyc lol 🤔🏈

just saw this news about the NFL shake-up 🤯. gotta feel for the Arizona Cardinals, dude, 15-36 is no joke! 💔 they need some serious changes behind the scenes. can't blame them for firing coach Gannon though, he was a total bust 😂. and what's up with ownership not making smart hires? 🤑 it's like, they want to win but don't know how to put the pieces together. 💡 anyway, the Dolphins getting ready to make a big GM move is exciting! 🤝 hope Alec Halaby can turn things around for them 😊. guess only time will tell if all these changes will lead to some new beginnings for teams in trouble 🌟.

"Change is the law of life, and those who live in it find peace." 🌿💪 I think this season's shake-up might have been necessary for some teams. Retaining coaches like Daboll despite poor performance can be seen as a calculated risk, while firing coaches like Gannon might have been too early. It's hard to say what the right move is until they see how these changes pan out.

omg can you believe some of these teams are like "honey we got this" after 6-11 record lolol what's next gonna be 0-16? i'm not saying danny devito can't coach but maybe it's time to bring in some fresh blood 🤣. and another thing, is it weird that giants fans are still rooting for their team despite all the struggles? like they're trying to find someone to blame instead of just face-palming 😂. anyway, only time will tell if these moves pay off or not but one thing's for sure, nfl draft season is gonna be lit 🎉
