Houston Police Department Investigates Fatal Shooting of Suspect with Outstanding Warrant During Traffic Stop.
A routine traffic stop turned violent when a suspect with an outstanding felony warrant was shot by a police officer after resisting arrest, according to the Houston Police Department. The incident occurred on Sunday morning in northeast Houston's Tidwell Road area.
The suspect, whose name has not been released, was pulled over by officers for a traffic violation at 1:40 a.m. However, it soon became apparent that the driver had an outstanding felony warrant, prompting authorities to attempt his arrest.
However, according to Assistant Chief Christy Smith, the suspect became uncooperative and aggressive during the process, leading to a struggle with police. During this confrontation, officers used a Taser on the suspect before resorting to deadly force.
Smith confirmed that the suspect was critically injured and transported to a hospital, but thankfully, no other individuals were harmed in the incident. There were two passengers present in the suspect's vehicle at the time of the altercation.
The Houston Police Department has launched an investigation into the officer-involved shooting, with assistance from the District Attorney's Office, Homicide Division, and Internal Affairs units. The outcome of this inquiry will determine whether the suspect was armed at the time of his arrest.
An official statement on the circumstances surrounding the suspect's involvement and any evidence that may have been found has yet to be released by the police department.
