Opera Traditionalists Will Adore the Met’s Opulent 1980s ‘Arabella’

For Opera Traditionalists, the Met's Revival of 'Arabella' is a Delightful Escape from Contemporary Aesthetics

Franco Zeffirelli and Otto Schenk's production style, which characterized the Metropolitan Opera's programming from the 1970s to the 1990s, was marked by an opulent realism that lavishly mounted works like Strauss's "Arabella." The revival, staged in November, is a welcome reminder of this era, with its lavish sets and costumes evoking a bygone age of grandeur.

Strauss's 1933 opera, which premiered as part of his partnership with Hugo von Hofmannsthal, shares similarities with another romantic comedy, "Der Rosenkavalier." However, it offers a unique blend of humor and tragedy, centered around Arabella, the eldest daughter of Count Waldner's family, who must navigate her way through three suitors in order to secure their family's financial future.

The revival features a talented cast, including Rachel Willis-Sørensen as Arabella, Tomasz Konieczny as Mandryka, and Evan LeRoy Johnson as Elemer. The performances were met with praise from the audience and critics alike, with Willis-Sørensen delivering a standout performance in her first "Arabella."

The production's attention to detail is evident in its sets and costumes, designed by Günther Schneider-Siemssen and Milena Canonero, respectively. The Met's orchestra, led by Nicholas Carter, delivered superb playing, although the conductor's brisk tempi at times rushed the singers.

Despite some criticisms about the pacing of the performance, the overall effect of this revival is an entertaining and engaging enterprise that will appeal to opera traditionalists. As part of its live-in-HD broadcast series, "Arabella" will be shown in theaters worldwide on November 22nd, offering audiences a chance to experience this delightful escape from contemporary aesthetics.

OMG I just saw the Met's 'Arabella' revival and it was literally so stunning!!! 😍 I mean, I've never been to an opera before but my friend dragged me along and now I'm hooked! The sets, costumes, music... everything was just on point! 💯 And the cast? Rachel Willis-Sørensen as Arabella is a total queen 👑. I loved how the story had this perfect balance of humor and tragedy. It's like, you're laughing one minute and crying the next 🤣. I'm so glad they're making it available on live-HD broadcast too, can't wait to watch it again at home! 📺

omg u guys i just watched the new aria by the Met and it's literally a blast from the past!!! 🎭 the sets and costumes are insane they're like something out of an old movie or something the opera itself is so funny and sad at the same time arabella is such a strong character she's got some serious sass 💁‍♀️

and the cast is talented af rachel willis-soerensen as arabella is amazing i loved her performance it's clear why they chose her for the role. but overall i think the pacing was a bit off sometimes the conductor was moving so fast that the singers couldn't keep up 😂 still tho it's worth watching if u love opera like me! 💖

Wow 🤩 the Met's revival of 'Arabella' is giving me all the old-school opera vibes 😎 I mean, who doesn't love lavish sets and costumes? It's like stepping into a bygone era of grandeur 🏰👑 The fact that they're bringing this back as part of their live-in-HD broadcast series is genius 📺💥 Interesting to see how it'll appeal to opera traditionalists 👀

I'm still loving the old-school Met productions 🙌! There's something so charming about those lavish sets and costumes - it's like stepping back into a different era 😊. And I have to say, Rachel Willis-Sørensen absolutely killed it as Arabella 💁‍♀️. The way the opera blends humor and tragedy is really unique, and I love how they've brought out that in the production. The attention to detail in the sets and costumes is insane - Günther Schneider-Siemssen and Milena Canonero must have put their hearts into it 🎨. And of course, a superb performance from the orchestra doesn't hurt 🎵. Can we get more revivals like this? I'm definitely down for watching "Arabella" on the big screen next month 🍿

omg u guys! i'm so stoked about the met's revamp of 'arabella'!!! 😍 they're really going all out with the production value - lavish sets & costumes? yes pls! 🤩 it's like a time capsule of opulence and grandeur, you know? 💎 and the cast is talented to death! rachel willis-sørensen as arabella is giving me LIFE!!! 🙌 Evan leroy johnson as elemer tho, who knew he could bring that much emotion to his role? 😭 anyway, even with some pacing issues, the whole thing feels like a delightful escape from the norm. can't wait to catch it on hd broadcast - anyone else gonna be tuning in? 📺

omg u guys i just saw the opertas revival of arabella at the met and i'm OBSESSED with how they got back to their roots with the sets & costumes 🤩 they literally looked like something out of an old film or somethin! rachel willis-soerensen as arabella was AMAZING btw, she totally stole the show 💃🏻🎶 and i love how they incorporated all these little details in the design, it's just so... elegant 🌹 i mean, don't get me wrong, i know some ppl might find it a bit too old-fashioned, but for me it was like a breath of fresh air compared to all the flashy new stuff we're used to seeing these days 😎

I'm glad to see the Met is reviving old-school operas like 'Arabella' - it's a nice change of pace from all the modern stuff 🤩. I mean, who doesn't love some opulent realism and lavish sets? It's like a breath of fresh air after all the minimalist designs we've seen lately.

But at the same time, I'm not sure if this revival is going to be for everyone...I know some people might find it a bit too much to handle with all that grandeur 🤯. And let's be real, the pacing could have been tighter, especially during the performances where the conductor was rushing through the numbers.

Still, I think it's awesome that the Met is bringing back this kind of production style and giving opera traditionalists something to get excited about 💥. And who knows, maybe it'll even convert some people who don't normally watch opera into fans 🤔. Either way, I'm down to give 'Arabella' a try on November 22nd! 😊

omg i loved the opulence of this revival 😍 it's so refreshing to see some grandeur back on stage! the attention to detail is insane, especially with the sets and costumes - it feels like stepping into a different era 🕰️. rachel willis-sørensen as arabella was perfection 🔥 i loved how she brought out the humor and tragedy in the opera. and that orchestra was on point 🎶 but yeah, conductor nicholas carter's tempi could've been more relaxed at times 🙃 overall tho, it's an awesome escape from modern opera aesthetics 🌟

I'm so stoked to hear about the Met's revival of 'Arabella' 🎉! I mean, who doesn't love a good ol' fashioned opera with lavish sets and costumes? It sounds like the perfect antidote to all the modern, edgy stuff out there. And let's be real, Rachel Willis-Sørensen's performance as Arabella is going to be EVERYTHING 💁‍♀️! I've been missing out on a lot of classic operas lately, so this revival really has me excited. Can't wait to catch the live-in-HD broadcast on November 22nd 📺 - it's going to be such a treat for the eyes and ears! 👀

omg u gotta check out the Met's revival of 'Arabella'!! 💥 i mean i know some ppl might think opera is old school but trust me, Franco Zeffirelli and Otto Schenk's production style is EVERYTHING 🤩 lavish sets, stunning costumes... it's like stepping into a bygone era of grandeur 💃🏻👑. rachel willis-sørensen as arabella tho... she's EVERYTHING 😍. the music is so catchy and the story is literally hilarious and tragic at the same time 🤣. u gotta see this revival, it's a total treat for opera fans! 👀

🤔 I'm all for revisiting the classics like 'Arabella' at the Met, it's nice to see some of that old-school opulence and grandeur back on stage 🏰. But let's be real, the opera world is always a bit behind the curve when it comes to modern tastes 😅. I mean, do we really need three suitors for Arabella? Can't we just give her a single love interest and see what happens? 💁‍♀️ Still, if it means bringing back the magic of old-school opera for fans like me who grew up on Strauss and Verdi 🎵, then I'm all in 👍. The cast did sound talented, especially Rachel Willis-Sørensen as Arabella, so fingers crossed she can carry that performance throughout the whole show 🤞.

I'm so glad they're reviving these old-school operas at the Met! There's something about the grandeur and opulence that just transports me back to when I was younger. The attention to detail in this production of 'Arabella' is really impressive, from the lavish sets to the beautiful costumes. It's a real treat for anyone who loves opera like I do. And the cast is talented - Rachel Willis-Sørensen as Arabella is just lovely! 😊 The fact that they're doing live-in-HD broadcasts too is great, it's going to be so cool to see this in theaters around the world. I'm definitely planning on catching a showing when it comes out... 👏

I'm loving the Met's revival of 'Arabella' - it's like stepping into a different era 🎭. The opulent sets and costumes are insane, I mean who needs all that drama in their opera? 😂 It's amazing how much detail went into recreating 1930s Vienna, from the lavish gowns to the ornate furniture. And the music is just as stunning - Strauss's score is like a masterclass in romantic comedy. The cast is talented too, especially Rachel Willis-Sørensen who nails her role as Arabella 💖. I'm curious to see how this translates on screen when it's broadcast live-in-HD 📺. Maybe it'll be a fun alternative for those who don't feel like dealing with the 'overly modern' vibe of some contemporary operas 😜

I'm not sure what's more surprising - the Met deciding to revive 'Arabella' or that anyone still finds opera with over-the-top sets and costumes enjoyable 🤷‍♂️. It's like they're trying to make up for lost time with all this grandeur, but it feels like a bit of a relic from another era. I mean, don't get me wrong, the performances were decent and Rachel Willis-Sørensen was lovely as Arabella 😊. But can't they just tone down the opulence a notch?

I'm so down for this revival of 'Arabella' 🙌! I mean, who doesn't love a good ol' fashioned opera with lavish sets and costumes? It's like stepping into a different era, you know? Franco Zeffirelli and Otto Schenk's production style is all about that opulent realism, and it sounds like they really nailed it this time around. And the cast, oh my gosh, Rachel Willis-Sørensen as Arabella sounds like she totally stole the show 🎭! I'm also loving the fact that 'Arabella' has a unique blend of humor and tragedy - it's not just another romantic comedy. Plus, who can resist singing along to Strauss's classic tunes? 😊 The Met's orchestra is always on point, so it's no surprise they killed it in this production. Overall, I'm excited for the live-in-HD broadcast series and getting to experience 'Arabella' in theaters worldwide 🎥!
